Year 3
We have had another busy and enjoyable few weeks in Year 3 and we are very proud of all the children’s hard work and enthusiasm. The children approached their recent tests with confidence and resilience. We were especially impressed with how well they coped, demonstrating a positive attitude and trying their very best. They should all feel proud of their efforts. In DT, the children completed their pneumatic sea creature projects. They thoroughly enjoyed evaluating their finished toys and were excited to see them in action. It was wonderful to watch their creations come to life and to hear them discussing what worked well and what they might improve next time. In history lessons, we have been learning about how Leigh-on-Sea has changed over time. The children explored and compared photographs from the past with those from the present day. This sparked lots of thoughtful discussions about how our local area has developed. In RE, the children researched a variety of religious festivals. They worked hard to gather information and then confidently shared their findings with the class. It was great to see them learning from one another and celebrating different traditions and cultures. In PE, the children have been practising yoga and it has quickly become a favourite! They are developing their balance, flexibility and mindfulness and it has been wonderful to see how much they are enjoying these sessions. We wish you a lovely weekend!

Year 4
The children are to be commended on the diligent way that they have worked tirelessly to complete their tests. We are proud of all of them. In English, the children have been exploring Zoo by Anthony Browne - a story that has really captured their interest. They began by examining the front cover and predicting what the story might be about. Then they listened to the narrative without pictures and sequenced the events based on what they'd heard. Working in groups, they later analysed the illustrations and discussed how text and images can be used to present contrasting ideas. We’ve also explored how an author’s word choices shape meaning and emotion, leading into writing from alternative points of view to help develop empathy. Maths lessons have focused on statistics. The children have studied a variety of ways that information can be represented, such as tally charts, bar charts, line graphs and pictograms and they have interpreted the data from within them. In science, our new topic on ‘Life Cycles’ was introduced. Using a range of pictures of living things, the children identified their characteristics and grouped them according to these. The focus of our Connected Curriculum lessons has been on completing our Lowry inspired artwork. The children have continued to use watercolours and their painting skills to master their background, fairground rides and buildings. They also added their ‘matchstick’ figures. The finished work has been of an exceptionally high standard and has demonstrated evidence both of the challenges the children faced and how they overcame these. As historians, the children have used various resources to observe and explain how rides and amusements in Southend have evolved over time.

Year 5
It has been a week of all seasons in one, but our intrepid Year 5 learners have continued with impressive fortitude and good humour. We began the week with some children reviewing the recent consortium paper, focusing on how to approach different types of questions more successfully. Across other lessons, the children revisited their understanding of fractions, decimals and percentages. They consolidated their skills in finding percentages of amounts before progressing onto fractions, including those with numerators greater than one. In preparation for our upcoming arithmetic test, some classes also revised key strategies such as rounding and place value. The children have been thoroughly enjoying our story from another culture, Cloud Tea Monkeys. Using the book’s vivid images of tea plantations, they wrote detailed setting descriptions using figurative and culturally appropriate language. They went on to explore how characters speak and behave depending on their audience, ending the week by composing a persuasive letter to a person of authority — the Empress of the Known World — extolling the virtues of a particular tea. In science lessons, the children investigated the solubility of solids, asking questions such as “Can all materials dissolve in water?” They discussed what makes a substance soluble and planned group investigations to test their ideas. After carrying out their experiments and recording their findings, they explored concepts such as where the solute goes and how it can be retrieved. The week concluded with demonstrations of filtration to separate undissolved materials and evaporation to recover dissolved substances. Indoor PE has offered the children a chance to relax, stretch and find some inner calm through our study of yoga. They have enjoyed learning a variety of poses and breathing exercises designed to improve posture, balance and strength. In our Connected Curriculum lessons, the children explored new forms of media and challenged their understanding of what art can be. They examined various art installations and immersive experiences, reflecting on how these made them feel and using artistic vocabulary, they also designed and created detailed drawings of Mayan masks, considering facial proportions and the cultural significance of these artefacts.

Year 6
Year 6 have enjoyed another memorable week of learning, highlighted by an exciting field study visit to Southend-on-Sea. Throughout the day, pupils demonstrated excellent behaviour and a positive attitude to learning as they explored a range of locations across the town. A particular highlight was the opportunity to visit the Council Chambers, where they enjoyed an informative presentation and gained a valuable insight into how decisions are made within the local community. Back in the classroom, pupils reflected on their experiences during the visit and considered the question: How can residents of Southend-on-Sea be proud of their city? Through thoughtful discussion and analysis, they identified many positive features of the area while also considering how the city could continue to develop and improve in the future. Their responses demonstrated maturity, critical thinking and a growing understanding of the places they study. In English, pupils completed the final version of their narrative, inspired by The Explorer. They worked hard to incorporate the improvements identified during the editing process, with a particular focus on developing tension and suspense. Through careful vocabulary choices, varied sentence structures and effective pacing, they produced engaging stories that built upon the adventurous spirit of the original text. It has been wonderful to see the enthusiasm and effort that Year 6 continue to bring to their learning, both in and beyond the classroom.

Year 6 Summer Fayre Helpers
It has been a Fayre tradition to invite Year 6 students to help on a stall at the Fayre. They can choose a friend they would like to do it with. We just ask that they follow the rules of the game and only give prize stamps in line with the rules of the game. It’s a fun experience for them and we love them being part of our Fayre. If your child/children would like to volunteer, please complete the form below which is your consent allowing them to be at the Fayre on the 11th July. If you put their friend's name down, please check the friend's parents/carers have also completed the form. Thank you very much and we look forward to seeing you and them at the Fayre.

SEESMA Festival
It's been a busy week for our choirs with the Boys' Choir performing on Sunday and the Show Choir performing at the Cliffs Pavilion on Thursday night as part of the the Junior Music Festival alongside other schools from the city. The children, as always, represented themselves and the school beautifully and their ability to learn all the songs and actions was no mean feat! Thank you to the children for all of their hard work and effort rehearsing and thank you to parents and family members for supporting the children in their performances.

Borough Sports Success
What an amazing afternoon at Borough Sports! Our squad of 57 athletes have trained so well over the past few months and have sacrificed their own time in order to achieve the best possible results. There were excellent throws, jumps, runs and relay changeovers from children in all year groups and an unbelievable collection of medals! We are so proud of each and every athlete. The standard from schools in group one is always exceptional and West Leigh rose to the challenge! Inspirational Person - Paddington Bear
A huge well done to all children who entered last half term's Showbie challenge - there were some superb medals and trophies created for Ernest Shackleton. As we approach the end of the school year, we are celebrating an inspirational character rather than a real-life figure — the much-loved Paddington Bear! Paddington is a wonderful example of our Golden Value of responsibility. Although he sometimes finds himself in tricky situations, he always does his very best to make things right. He takes ownership of his actions, shows honesty when things go wrong, and demonstrates resilience in putting them right again. What makes Paddington truly special is his determination to always do the right thing, even when it isn’t easy. Paddington reminds us that everyone makes mistakes, but it is how we respond to them that really matters. The last Showbie challenge of this year involves responding to a problem that Paddington has found himself in: he has been helping with the decorating but has made a huge mess! Your challenge is to decide how Paddington will fix the problem responsibly. You could complete this in a variety of ways: draw a picture to show his solution; write a short story to describe the problem and what Paddingotn does next or even create a comic strip to show Paddington’s response. Add your entries to Showbie or hand them to Mrs London - every entry receives a prize!
