Alumni Spotlight

Q&A with Joe Tagliareni, Class of 2022

Joe was a 2022 graduate from the Mount's Business Management program. He recently joined the U.S. Coast Guard and is on his way to becoming a rescue swimmer.
Being a swimmer at MSMC made me want to utilize my talent to help people in need.

Q: What events did you swim?

I primarily swam the 100 and 200 back.

Q: What are some of your favorite memories from being part of the MSMC swim team?

I really enjoyed the bus rides, a lot of great memories made with the team and Marvin.

Q: What was your proudest accomplishment as a swimmer at MSMC?

My proudest accomplishment as a swimmer at the Mount was helping bring the small team we had to 2nd place at Skylines my final year. Our last relay was something to be proud of and helped hold on.

Q: How did being on the team impact your college experience?

It helped keep me focused on something bigger than myself while getting my degree.

Q: What have you been doing since graduating?

I worked for a year but then realized I wanted to keep swimming, so I joined the Coast Guard to become a rescue swimmer.

Q: How did your experience as a student-athlete at MSMC influence your career or personal life?

Being a swimmer at MSMC made me want to utilize my talent to help people in need.

Q: Are you still involved in swimming or any other sports?

I swim when I can and go to the gym every day.

Q: Is there any advice you would give to current swimmers or student-athletes at MSMC?

If you want to swim faster, then swim faster.

Q: Anything else you would like to share about your time at MSMC or your life after graduation?

During swim practice I sometimes didn't want to be there but now that I'm retired, there is not a place I wish to be more than Kaplan pool at 6:30 a.m.

Freshman Spotlight

Q&A with Kate Cerven, Class of 2028

Kate is a freshman Biology major from Poughquag, NY.
We are like a family and all get along together so well.

Q: What motivated you to join the MSMC swim team?

My biggest motivation to join the MSMC swim team was my friend Teddy. I met him in Theology class, and he mentioned he was on the swim team. When I told him I used to be a swimmer and that I missed it, he encouraged me to talk to the coach about joining the team and giving swimming another shot. Without his persistence of telling me to join the team every time I saw him, I never would have been a part of this great team.

Q: What is your favorite part of being on the team?

How we are all like a family and all get along together so well.

Q: What has been your proudest moment as a member of the team so far?

When I won a bet with my coach that I could break a certain time in my event, so he had to do a backflip into the pool after our meet.

Q: How would you describe the team atmosphere?

The team has such a good vibe especially after a meet.

Q: What is your major, and how are you balancing academics with athletics?

I am majoring in Biology. Balancing academics with athletics was challenging during the first semester, but I found that staying organized and managing my time effectively is key. Being a student-athlete has taught me to prioritize tasks and stay disciplined.
