Football Falls to Bowdoin Under the Lights

Entering Saturday night's contest with identical 3-4 records, Colby and Bowdoin clashed for the right to raise the CBB Trophy. Each team defeated Bates earlier in the season.

Matt McHugh

Bowdoin jumped out to an early lead in the first quarter, and extended the margin to 21-0 heading into halftime. Opening the second half, Colby extended its first drive by recovering a muffed catch on a Daniel Gerlach punt. Another fourth down conversion by the legs of quarterback Christopher Milmoe (16-yard scramble) set up the Mules in the red zone. Two plays later, Milmoe found Matt McHugh in the end zone for his first collegiate passing touchdown.

Bowdoin responded with a 10-play, 75-yard scoring drive to regain the three-score lead heading into the final frame.

One more score by each team in the final quarter gave Bowdoin the victory 35-14, and sent the CBB trophy to live in Brunswick for the next year.

Julian Young, Jackson Murray

Linebacker Julian Young led all defenders with 14 total tackles. The junior has 83 tackles on the season, leading all NESCAC defenders by more than a dozen despite missing the Amherst game with a broken hand.

Mark Kassis

Colby is 3-5 heading into their final week of the season. The Mules will host 7-1 Middlebury on Saturday, as the Panthers look to secure their second NESCAC Championship in five years.

DeWitt, Casanova Named All-NESCAC

Following an exceptional performance in the backfield throughout the season for the Mules, Samantha DeWitt was named to the All-NESCAC 2nd Team. She is one of only two first-years to be named All-NESCAC in Women's Soccer finding the back of the net twice, starting in 14 of 15 games and contributed the third most minutes on the team.

For his skillful performance in the midfield this season, Eduardo Casanova earned 2nd Team All-NESCAC recognition. The sophomore tallied five goals on the year (including the game winner against Bates) and added an assist while starting in all 14 games for the Mules.

Women’s Basketball Opens Season with Close Win Over UMass Boston

To start the 2023-24 season, the Mules competed at the Thomas Charlie Ryan Classic, taking on UMass Boston Saturday and SUNY Canton Sunday.

Lydia Mordarski

Against the Beacons, the two teams stayed neck in neck resulting in 15 total lead changes and neither team taking any real big advantage. The game came down to the final two minutes, with Lydia Mordarski fielding a crucial offensive rebound and laying it back in for a three point lead. The Beacons answered with a basket of their own but Chelsea Ibenegbu was able to seal the victory for the Mules sinking two clutch free throws in the final seconds resulting in a 59-56 win. Mordarski led the team offensively tallying 14 points followed by Carter McGloon with 11 and Ibenegbu right behind with 10. First-year Kate Olenik had a great debut contributing eight rebounds and nine points, just shy of a double-double.

The next day, Colby stayed close with the Kangaroos through the first three frames but SUNY Canton eventually pulled away leading to a 16 point advantage in the fourth quarter. Despite Colby bringing it within five, the Mules ran out of time as the Kangaroos hit their free throws, resulting in a 72-62 final score. Olenik continued to shine, netting 19 of Colby’s 29 bench points while grabbing eight rebounds and four steals. Mordarski finished with 12 points and four steals, with Caroline Smith adding 11 points.

Carter McGloon

The Mules start the season 1-1 and will remain on the road heading to Cambridge, Mass. Tuesday for a 7:00pm matchup against MIT.

Men's Basketball Takes Down Gordon for First Win of the Season

Hosting Colby-Sawyer, Emerson, and Gordon for a season kickoff tournament, the Mules played two games going 1-1 to start the 2023-24 campaign.

Jack Lawson

In their first game Friday night, the Mules came up just short to the Emerson Lions with a score of 93-88. Emerson had multiple big leads in the game but Colby was able to close the gap every time with clutch three pointers, dunks and offensive rebounds. In the end, late-game free throws sealed the win for the Lions. Max Poulton led the way with 22 points as Jack Lawson scored 17 while grabbing 11 rebounds. Lucas Green also scored in double-digits with 15 points, adding six assists.

The next day, the Mules were able to flip the script cruising to a 89-78 win over the Gordon Scots. Colby, after setting the stage early with a 16-3 opening run, did not look back and held on to the lead for the remainder of the game. Second chance points played a huge role in the victory with Colby tallying 21 compared to Gordon's six. First-year Marcos Montiel and Junior Ben Kaczmarek both had great performances, combining for 36 points and 22 rebounds. Liam O'Connell contributed 15 points while Poulton added 10.

Ben Kaczmarek

Colby is set to travel this weekend for the Lafrance Hospitality Classic at UMass Dartmouth and will look to improve on their 1-1 season start.
