MMS Cross Country

Chloie Biddle

Sports at Morgan are always amazing and go on all year, no matter if there's wins, losses, or improvements. The school year has just started but fall sports are already here!

The sport cross country is teams and individual athletes running long-distance races on outdoor courses over natural ground. There are 45 runners participating in the 2024 Morgan Middle School season.

I interviewed some cross country athletes to see how they like their sports so far and why they chose the sport.

Cross country coach Jackson Burkhart says, “ I am really excited to be coaching my second year and we have a great team.” Mr. Burkhart's favorite part of cross country is that not a lot of people are willing to do the sport because they don't have the guts. “ Running isn’t about being the best, it's about pursuing your personal best,” he says.

Eighth grader Morgan Mays says, “This season is going very well, Everyone is very kind and the coaches are amazing. I chose to do cross country because I wanted to try something new. I used to do soccer and I have always loved running.” This is Morgan's second year doing Cross Country and she intends to pursue it in high school. A quote that inspires Morgan is “ It's nice to be important, but important to be nice” by John Templeton.

Seventh grader, Kinsley Shaw says, ” This season is going great, we've had a lot of training and I am excited for our first meet.” “I chose to do cross country because I have always loved running. I wanted to get better at running for the other sports I do.” It is Kinsley’s first year running cross country and her favorite part is competing against others.

Eighth grader, Darla Perry says, “This season is going amazing. I'm two minutes faster than I was last year! Also not just for me, the season is going amazing for everyone else. We all can't wait for our first meet, it's going to be amazing! I chose to do cross country because I did it in seventh grade and I thought it was so fun! The atmosphere is amazing and you can never feel like you don't have a friend or you're bad at XC because everyone is so supportive!” It is Darla's second year doing cross country and her favorite part is being able to push herself and singing on the bus rides on the way to races. A quote that inspires Darla is “ Strength doesn't come from what you can do, it comes from overcoming the things you once thought you couldn't," by Karah Goucher.

Seventh grader, Stella Raap says:” My favorite part about cross country is running hills at Craig's Hill. I did cross country so I could get fit.” This is Stella's first year doing cross country and she says it’s hard, but really fun.

Back To School!

Urijah Holiday

We’re back at school, so get ready for your first, second, or third year here at MMS. This year will be great if you know what to expect.

The Office

If this is your first time at Morgan Middle School then you should know that the staff in the office is here to help with anything you need. If there is something wrong with your locker, schedule, etc., the people in the office are super nice and they are there to help.

Mrs. Pennington, Mrs. Berry, and Mrs. Foster are the office secretaries. You can see them if you are late to school, if you are going to be absent, or if anything else is going on.

The nurse, principal, vice principals, and counselors are also all in the office area. If you need to talk to one of them, ask one of the office secretaries.

POWER

Always use POWER in everything you do at school. This includes classes, sports, etc.

It stands for:

  • Perseverance
  • Ownership
  • Wisdom
  • Enthusiasm
  • Respect

Spirit Week

For people who don’t, know Spirit Week is a week where you wear something that corresponds to a certain topic each day. For example, maybe on Monday, you get to wear wacky hats or on Tuesday you get to wear Disney stuff.

This is a fun way to show school spirit and have fun at school, so everyone should participate.

Clubs

There are currently four clubs at Morgan Middle School. The active ones are science club, art club, chess club, and board games club.

Be on the lookout for information about new clubs, and if you want to start a club you can ask ASB Advisor Mrs. Smith about how to get started.

Have a nice school year and be nice to your teachers.

Chocolate covered Oreo balls Recipe

Brooklyn Velasquez

These are easy, no-bake Oreo chocolate covered cookie balls! Oreo balls are very easy and fun to make and they don't take a lot of time.

Ingredients

  • 36 Oreo cookies
  • 8 ounces of cream cheese, softened
  • 16 ounces semi-sweet baking chocolate, candy melts, or almond bark
  • coconut oil (optional)

Directions

Add the Oreo cookies to a blender, food processor, or crush up by hand. (I use a blender.)

Close the blender and blend the Oreos until they are a powdered like consistency.

Then, dump the crushed Oreos into a mixing bowl and add the cream cheese.

Stir until the cream cheese is completely blended with the crushed Oreos.

Shape the mixture into about 1 inch Oreo balls. Then put the balls in the freezer for about 10 minutes.

While the Oreo balls are in the freezer, melt the chocolate according to the package instructions. (I used milk chocolate melting chocolates.)

Tip: I add coconut oil to the chocolate to make it softer and so it melts smoother.

Dip the chilled Oreo balls into the melted chocolate and roll them until they are covered.

Place the Oreo balls onto a baking sheet to dry.

Finish off by adding any topping of your choice while the chocolate is still soft and warm. (I like to add either powdered sugar or sea salt.)

Finally, refrigerate the Oreo balls for 1 hour or until they are fully hardened. You can store them in a container in the fridge for up to 2 weeks.

Volleyball Season Kicks Off

Brooklynn DeBritz

Pass, set, SPIKE! The MMS volleyball season is up and running, and both 7th and 8th-grade students participating are starting the season strong!

Tryouts were completed on September 6th. There is an A and B team for each grade with twelve players on each team. All the students who tried out worked hard and did great!

The coaches this year are;

  • 8th grade A team- Kelley Quirk
  • 8th grade B team- Maysen Tinney
  • 7th grade A team- Stephanie Harwood
  • 7th grade B team- Tonja DeHerrara

Thank you to the coaches for all the hard work and dedication to this season!

7th grade coach Stephanie Harwood shared some thoughts on the season so far, “I’m genuinely thrilled for the volleyball season ahead! My primary goal is for the girls to gain a deeper understanding of the game while having a fantastic time. We kicked off the season on a high note by sweeping Naches in our home opener, which was a great demonstration of our team's talent and potential. I’m passionate about volleyball because it truly embodies the essence of teamwork—every player has a specific role and responsibility, and success depends on how well we work together. The sport is dynamic and engaging, which makes it incredibly enjoyable. I believe that when players are having fun, they're more motivated to learn and improve, so I’m really looking forward to what we can achieve together this season.”

“We’re doing well and have definitely made some improvements,” Brooklyn Velasquez, 8th grader, says. “There is still stuff to learn but we are getting it down.” She also mentions how “Communication is key. Without talking, it is difficult to play as a team.”

When asked something they wish people knew about the game of volleyball, eighth-grader Ashley Hill wants people to know it is “harder than it looks” and “... the volleyball rotation of positioning is also very difficult to master.”

Wednesday, September 11 was the opening game of the season and the Bulldogs swept Naches, winning all of the sets in every match!

Thank you to the students, parents, and community members cheering on our MMS team! If you are available, be sure to go cheer on Morgan at an upcoming match.

Way to go Bulldogs!

509Teens Provides opportunities & Activities for students

Local group aims to help local teens "Be the Change" they want to see in our community

Morgan INsider Staff

If you attended Bulldog Day this year, chances are you met some of the volunteers from 509Teens in the MMS commons during the event. Several volunteers came to Morgan's back-to-school event to share information about their group and how students can get more information about their events and programs (and they gave away lots of great "swag" like water bottles and stickers.)

Courtesy of 509Teens

What is 509Teens, and what do they do?

509Teens is a local non-profit group that works to support teens in Kittitas County by providing opportunities for making positive connections with other teens in our community. They organize BBQs, game nights, and many other activities throughout the year.

The group's mission is simple- to promote positive connections among teens in Kittitas County. This mission is accomplished through lots of organizing and networking by executive director Brandi Amundson. Brandi is the parent of two teens- a Morgan 7th-grader and an EHS freshman- and she and her team are committed to supporting youth in Kittitas County.

What can I expect if I go to a 509Teens event?

"If MMS teens decide to come to a 509Teens event, they can expect a welcoming, inclusive, and safe environment designed just for them. The events offer a variety of free activities and special events throughout the year where teens can have fun, connect with their peers, and develop new skills. Whether it’s for socializing or personal growth, 509Teens events are all about building connections and having a great time in a supportive setting" -Brandi Amundson

Courtesy of 509Teens

When is the next 509Teens event?

If you want to experience a 509Teens event, they are hosting an Open House BBQ on September 27 at their downtown Ellensburg space, 211 W. Third Ave.

The open house is a great opportunity for local teens and their parents/guardians to learn more about the group and how to make positive connections with other teens in the community. Visit their website for more information.

BattleTech: A Game of Armoured Combat

Jeremiah Littrell

BattleTech is a tabletop game of Mechanised combat set in the middle of the 32nd century, where you fight your opponents in BattleMechs.

They are several-story mechs powered by susceptible nuclear fusion reactors. On the board, they are represented by 2-inch tall models that you can paint faction specific, or however you want.

Battletech can be played like Dungeons and Dragons, progressing through a story, or like Warhammer 40,000, in this review, it will be played like the latter.

How to play BattleTech

Required items:

  • Two or more models
  • One hexagonal grid map
  • 2 plus 6-sided dice(D6)
  • One Rule book (Preferably from the set: BattleTech: A Game of Armored Combat, or BattleTech: Beginner Box)
  • BattleMech sheets
  • Writing utensils

Optional Items:

  • Book: BattleTech: Total Warfare
  • Book: BattleTech: BattleMech Manual
  • GATOR cards

Phases

(Marauder MAD-5R and Timberwolf/MadCat B will be examples in this review.)

Phase 0- Preparation/Steps:

  • Get the unit sheet
  • Count Battle Value, this step is done by calculating the pilot's skill, the base on the sheet is 4 gunnery skill and 5 piloting skill, to change this we suggest you use Master unit list. (Lower is better.)
  • Compare Total Battle value, Since Team Two’s MadCat is 347 points more Team One can increase or Team Two can decrease the pilot's gunnery or piloting skill to match it as close as possible, in this example, Team One is going to increase Piloting skill to 6 and decrease Gunnery skill to 3 to make the total Battle value difference 47.
  • You roll off to see who gets the highest (Whoever gets the highest Deploys second, Moves second (So you can react to what the opponent did) The shooting and melee phases happen simultaneously because damage happens afterward)
  • Deploy units on the map, Red is Team One acceptable deployment zone Blue is Team Two’s acceptable deployment zone, Black is an unacceptable deployment zone.
The image used as a map is 1-fourth a standard paper map.

Example: Team one rolls 12, and Team two rolls 5... and red deployed on Hexagon 1117.

...team two would deploy first and they deployed on Hexagon 910
and red deployed on Hexagon 1117.
Team one’s Marauder MAD-5R
Team two’s Mad Cat B

Phase 1- Movement Phase

  • First, you choose if you want to jump, run, or walk (We have no Jump capable BattleMechs: This is determined by the BattleMechs’ jumping), different movement generates different amounts of heat, walking generates 0 heat, and running generates 1 heat.
Example: Mad Cat B Mech Data movement, no jump jets.

Moving through Terrain

Moving through terrain, going into light-density terrain adds 1 to the movement making the total movement cost 2 but it gives you 1 cover which is 1 on the other on the GATOR card.

Going up a level on terrain costs 1 movement which totals 2 but on the odd occasion that you go up a level into dense terrain, it will equal movement plus positive levels changed plus terrain modifier.

Example from the map.

Movement Costs

Going forwards/backward costs 1 movement, turning a hexagonal facing costs 1 movement (Turning 360° costs 3 movement points) going up a level costs 1 movement, and the total cost of movement must be equal to or lower than your chosen movement.

Annotation of Movement

Team two’s MadCat B chooses to run it has a running amount of 8 movement points and starts on Hexagonal unit 0910, moves forward into Hexagonal unit 0911 (1 movement point spent) turns left 1 Hexagonal unit (2 movement points spent), and moves forward into Hexagonal unit 1011 (3 movement points spent) turns 1 right Hexagonal unit (4 movement points currently spent), moves forward into Hexagonal unit 1012 (5 movement points currently spent) then moves into Hexagonal unit 1013 1 movement spent on walking 1 movement point spent on climbing and 1 movement point spent moving into light terrain (8 movement points spent) end of MadCat B’s movement.
Team one’s Marauder MAD-5R chooses to run it has a running amount of 6 movement points and starts on Hexagonal unit 1117, turns left 1 Hexagonal unit (1 movement point spent) moves forward into Hexagonal unit 1016(2 movement points spent) turns right 1 Hexagonal unit (3 movement points spent) moves forward into Hexagonal unit 1015 (4 movement points spent) moves forward into Hexagonal unit 1014 and spends another movement point on climbing up a level (6 movement points spent) end of Marauder MAD-5R’s movement.

Phase 2- Shooting Phase

  • Choose Weapons to fire
  • Calculate heat afterward
  • Calculate GATOR (Modifiers Gunnery skill+Attacker Modifier (walked+1, Ran+2, Jumped+3)+Target modifier (Moved 0-2 Hexes (Hexagonal units) +0 Moved 3-4 Hexes +1, Moved 5-6 Hexes +2, Moved 7-9 Hexes +3, Moved 10-17 Hexes +4, Moved 18-24 Hexes +6, Moved 25+ Hexes +6)+ Other mods (Terrain, certain components destroyed, pulse laser - from this)+Range mods (Short range+0 Medium range+4 Long range+4, to succeed your shot you must roll equal to or higher than the total)
Example: Team One’s Marauder MAD-5R is going to fire its Right arm ERPPC*1 and medium laser, and its right torso’s RAC5 *2 twice then it jams (generating 20 heat), Team Two’s Mad Cat B is going to fire its left arm Large pulse laser and Small pulse laser and its left torso Lrm10 *3 and right torsos SRM4 *4 (generating 19 heat)

Definition of Abbreviated Terms-

  • *1 Extra Range Particle Projection Cannon
  • *2 Rotary Autocannon 5
  • *3 Long Range Missile 10
  • *4 Short Range Missile

Example: The Marauder MAD-5R rolls 8 for its ERPPC, rolls 11 for medium laser, and the RAC5 gets the rolls 3 & 11, The MAD CAT B rolls 7 for its LRM 10, rolls 11 for its SRM, Rolls 2 for its small pulse laser, and rolls 6 for its Large pulse laser.

Phase 3- Melee Phase

  • Choose Applicable Melee choices (BattleMech cannot punch with an arm it fired with, A BattleMech cannot kick with both legs)
  • Calculate PATATO (Modifiers Piloting skill+Attacker Modifier+Target modifier+Attack type (Kicking -2, Punching+0)+Other mods)
Example: Marauder MAD-5R rolls 8 for its kick and rolls 6 for the left arm punch, Mad Cat B rolls 6 for its kick, and rolls 9 for its punch.

Phase 4- Damage Phase

Determine cluster table.

Roll where damage hits.

Remove exterior armour. If all exterior armour in a section is destroyed go to the internal structure.

Roll a critical hit for every internal structure removed.

If all internal structures are removed that limb is destroyed and goes to the next available limb (Arms Legs go to the corresponding torso side and the torso side goes to the center torso) if the mech Head, Arms Legs, or center torso is destroyed that unit is removed from play.

Example: MadCat B takes ERPPC to the Right Arm dealing 10 Damage, Medium Laser to the Right Arm dealing 5 Damage and takes RAC5 to the Centre Torso dealing 5 Damage, the kick hits the left leg doing 15 damage.

4 of MadCat B’s LRM 10 missiles hit, and 3 SRM4 Missiles hit.

Marauder MAD-5R takes a Large pulse laser to the left leg dealing 10 damage, LRM missile 1 hits the right arm dealing 1 damage, LRM missile 2 hits the left arm dealing 1 damage, LRM missile 3 hits the left torso dealing 1 damage, LRM missile 4 hits the Centre Torso dealing 1 damage, SRM missile 1 hit the Head dealing 2 damage, and the pilot takes a wound and consciousness check, pilot succeeds, SRM missile 2 hits the left torso dealing 2 damage, SRM missile 3 hits the Head dealing 2 damage, and the pilot takes a wound and consciousness check, pilot Fails, and falls backward into hexagonal unit 1013 and takes 15 fall damage to his right leg, and then takes a punch to the head dealing 7 damage and the pilot takes a wound and consciousness check, pilot automatically Fails due to being unconscious.

Post damage Phase BattleMech Cards
Post damage Phase BattleMech Cards

Phase 5- Heat Phase

  • Calculate final heat
  • Subtract the heatsink amount from that number
  • Apply effects from exceeding heatsink capacity

Example: MadCat B generated 20 total heat and has 30 heatsinks so it handles the total heat generated, Marauder MAD-5R generated 21 total heat and has 34 heatsinks so it handles the total heat generated.

At the Ceremony of Twelve, the community’s twelve-year-olds eagerly accept their predetermined Life Assignments. But Jonas is chosen for something special. He begins instruction on his life’s work with an old man known only as The Giver. Gradually Jonas learns that power lies in feelings. Serge Chaloff

A cautionary tale of a jazz man's rise and fall

Michael Eberhart

Have you heard the legend of Serge Chaloff?

Serge Chaloff, an American jazz baritone (bari) saxophonist, became well-known in the late 1940s. Serge took up the bari at a young age, inspired by Harry Carney, the bari player from the very famous Duke Ellington Big Band. Serge was very talented and broke into the jazz scene quickly.

Serge ended up working with the Woody Herman Big Band, a then very popular big band. Serge was also part of the notorious four brothers saxophone section with saxophonists Zoot Sims, Herbie Steward, Stan Getz, and himself.

Google Images

Unfortunately, heroin and some other hard drugs were very popular in the jazz scene during that time. This caused a lot of very famous jazz artists to get addicted, and unfortunately, Serge was a victim of a bad heroin addiction.

The Woody Herman big band had its fair share of addicts, but Serge was particularly troublesome. Serge was distributing heroin to the rest of the big band, and because of this, Woody Herman decided to fire Serge. However, Woody told Serge he could stay with the band until they reached Boston (Serge’s hometown).

Google Images

The night before the band played in Boston, they played at Nattings, in Waltham, on the Charles River. The building they played in was on a pier sticking out above the river. At intermission, Serge asked Woody to come out to the balcony.

“Look down in the river,” Serge told Woody, “and tell me what you see.”

“Nothing,” said Woody, “except a lot of pieces of paper floating about.”

“That's the band's baritone book,” said Serge. Being that Serge was the only person who knew it by heart, he felt confident as he said, “Now you can’t fire me.”

Woody had to keep Serge in the band for another year before he could get the bari parts copied and fire him. A year later, Woody had re-copied all of the bari parts and fired Serge.

About a decade later, Serge got clean and recorded the album “Blue Serge” which was considered the highlight of his musical career. This seemed like a turning point for the former heroin addict.

Unfortunately, Serge was diagnosed with spinal paralysis and passed away at the young age of 33 in 1957, just a year after releasing “Blue Serge”. He played his last-ever recording session (The Four Brothers reunion) in a wheelchair.

Google Images

Serge now gets around 5,000 monthly listeners on Spotify.

Pumpkin Cake Pops recipe

Rheanee Beeson-Petty

If you're hungry and want a sweet treat, try making these cake pops from gimmedelicious! Not only are they festive for fall, but they also taste amazing!

Tools

  • cookie scooper (optional)
  • stand mixer or hand mixer (optional)
  • large metal spoon
  • metal fork
  • mixing spatula
  • mixing bowl
  • parchment paper
  • 9×13 baking pan
  • cake pop sticks or toothpicks

Ingredients

  • Pumpkin Spice Cake (you can buy one at the store or you can make pumpkin cake from scratch! This time, I will be using one from the store.)
  • 6 ounces cream cheese, at room temp
  • 6 tablespoons butter, at room temp
  • 3 cups confectioners' sugar
  • 2 oz bag or bar of white chocolate

Directions

Make the pumpkin spice cake (use the boxed cake mix or make a from-scratch recipe) according to recipe directions.

Tip: Make sure you have ALL the ingredients before starting to bake.

While the cake is baking, beat the cream cheese, butter, and confectioner's sugar together (in a stand mixer or by hand with a mixing spatula,) until it is light and fluffy.

Tip: If you are short on time you can buy pre-made frosting from the store!

Once the cake is cooled, crumble it into a large mixing bowl. (The texture of the cake causes it to crumble easily.) Use a fork to break any larger pieces of cake apart until the entire cake is crumbled into a fine texture.

Next, add the frosting mixture to the bowl of crumbled cake. Mix using the back of a large metal spoon until thoroughly combined. The mixture should be moist enough to roll into 1 1/2-inch cake balls and still hold a round shape.

After rolling the cake balls by hand, place them on wax or parchment paper, cover them with plastic wrap, and place in the freezer for 10-15 minutes to firm.

Tip: Use a cookie scooper to make all the cake balls the same size.

Place the chocolate in a microwave-safe bowl. Melt it in the microwave using low heat, stirring occasionally until it is melted and smooth.

Tip: Don't melt the chocolate too fast, or it will burn. I did that, which is why I ended up putting extra frosting on my cake pops and not chocolate. They still tasted good, but they were not the same as regular cake pops.

Dip the cake balls in chocolate using a toothpick or cake pop stick to hold them.

Place them on waxed paper to set.

Tip: Some chocolate may pool around the base of the cake ball onto the wax paper. Once the coating hardens, you can break off any unwanted coating.

Repeat with the remaining cake balls and let them harden completely.

Tip: You can make the cake balls ahead of time and store them in an airtight container on the counter or in the refrigerator for several days.

Enjoy!

The MINECRAFT MOVIE

Everything we know, based on the newly released trailer

Adithya Rajendran

Did you know that there is going to be a movie made based on the hit video game Minecraft?

If you somehow do not know what Minecraft is, it is a sandbox/ survival game that was created by Mojang in 2011. In the Minecraft game, you can choose to play in a creative world or a survival world.

IMDB

Mojang has been working on this movie for a while now, and sources say that the script has been in the works for roughly 10 years. According to internet sources, the movie is finally in production. A teaser trailer was released on September 4, 2024, and IMDB reports that the movie is set to be released on April 4, 2025!

There are mixed reviews on the new trailer, and how the movie might turn out.

Few are saying it looks good but the majority who have seen it are…

Disappointed. Sad. Upset.

Google Images

Most of the criticism is about the movie being live-action, and how for Steve they just slapped a blue shirt on actor Jack Black. Some are also criticizing how the "Mobs" (monsters in the game that are either hostile (zombies) or peaceful (sheep)) look. The trailer has also gotten over 1 million dislikes on YouTube.

Google Images

Many viewers have left reviews on the trailer on YouTube, with most of them saying things like “It looks terrible!” Many Minecraft YouTubers and Twitch streamers have also stated similar opinions online.

There is a theory that it’s all just some big marketing stunt, and they made it look bad so that people would go and see the movie themselves.

The people who star as protagonists in the Minecraft movie are Jack Black as Steve, Jason Momoa as Garret Garrison as the garbage man, Danielle Brooks as Dawn, Sebastian Eugene Hansen as Henry, and Emma Myers as Natalie.

The antagonists appear to be the piglins, an evil Pigman civilization from the Nether dimension known for causing havoc to the overworld.

What do you think will happen in the Minecraft movie? Submit your predictions HERE.

The Build-up of WWII

Trenton Kelly

Ever wonder how World War II started? Well, read on to learn about the causes and post World War I build-up that ultimately led to WWII.

Post WWI "Losers"

1918. WWI “the war to end all wars” had just ended, and many countries on the losing side known as the “Central Powers” had been severely punished after their loss. The biggest loser was the German Empire, the leader of the Central Powers.

The main losses to the German Empire were the loss of the Danzig region (which was very important to the German Empire because of the city of Danzig which went to the nation of Poland,) the demilitarization of the Rhineland, and the limitation of their military to 100,000 soldiers.

Another one of the major losers was Austria-Hungary. One of the things that happened to Austria-Hungary was the dissolving of their empire. The sole successor, Hungary, was oppressed by the winners with the Treaty of Trianon, which made them lose half their land and suppressed their military to 100,000 soldiers.

Google Images

Another loser was the Ottoman Empire. The losses to this country were their empire was dissolved, their economy collapsed and their major city Istanbul was demilitarized.

Rise of Fascism

It was 1936 and tensions were rising across the globe. Many countries worldwide started more wars and broke treaties from WWI. Many different democratic countries made empty threats toward different dictatorships such as Germany, Italy, and Japan.

Germany had a dictator named Adolf Hitler who took power in 1933 with the NSPAD party (National Socialist German Workers' Party, aka the NAZI party.) The reason Hitler came to power so easily is because he promised to fix the nation after the 1st World War and he blamed Germany's loss on many different groups of people to get people on his side.

According to NationalWW2Museum.org, the groups he blamed the loss on were the Jewish, Russians, and French. Hitler blaming the loss on these groups of people caused the public to be more indulged in his presidency, and it fueled racism across Germany.

Meanwhile, in Italy, the leader was Benito Mussolini. He wanted to reform the Roman Empire and bring Italy to glory after they got way less land than expected post WWI.

Japan was led by Emperor Hirohito. He believed that Japan should own the entire Pacific and have the strongest navy in the world. They also thought that the Japanese were the superior country in the world and felt they should influence the whole Asian continent.

Annexations

1936 Germany was now led by Adolf Hitler who was a full-blown dictator. He believed in "lebensraum" (Living Space) which meant he wanted to own everything so the true race (the Aryans) would own the world.

Austria was mainly German, population-wise, so many people in Austria already wanted to join Germany. Because of that, Adolf Hitler claimed it as German with little resistance. The joining of Austria and Germany became known as Anschluss.

In Italy, they had declared war on Ethiopia, as Ethiopia had little to no military technology and a small military. Italy saw them as an easy place to conquer to add more colonial lands in Africa.

In December of 1938, Germany annexed the Sudetenland (a region in Czechoslovakia with many ethnic Germans) so it was ceded to Germany.

Finally, in March of 1939, Germany annexed all of Czechoslovakia and left Slovakia as a puppet state.

Google Images

The Start of WWII

In September of 1939, Adolf Hitler was looking to reclaim the Polish corridor (Danzig) after it was taken from the German Empire after WWI. So, Germany sent an ultimatum to Poland demanding it.

Britain and France told them they would support Poland if they said no. So, Poland said no to Germany’s ultimatum and the Allied Powers (Britain, France and all their colonies) joined the war against Germany on Poland's side.

2024 presidential election

My opinions on the candidates, their debate performances, and the factors that may decide this year's presidential election

Bridger Thompson

Just this summer we were given the announcement that President Joe Biden was not going to be rerunning for president. His Vice President, Kamala Harris, has since been the new democratic candidate for president.

Republican candidate Donald Trump has had to change his approach to the election. Both candidates have strong political and social connections, which has contributed to this race being very close.

In the end, the deciding factor will almost certainly stand in the presidential and/or vice presidential debates.

Pros and Cons for Harris

Harris has a deep political background (she has been involved in politics since 2003), and this means that Trump will have a lot to question but it also means that she will have deep relations with the democratic party. This will give her many supporters, socially and politically.

Some pros to help her in the election include:

  • She is endorsed by Biden and Obama, so she has the support of former Democratic presidents
  • She has worked in positions and has deep connections in California, which is a must-win state for Harris
  • Her dad was a Stanford professor and her mom was a cancer researcher, so she had a good education

All in all her deep connections will provide her with lots of information and data, which could help her win the election.

On the flip side, Harris has left a lot of areas open for discussion, and she needs to cover/heal her weaknesses before and during the election.

Some cons that may weaken her campaign include:

  • She has struggled to publicly explain her decision to change her policies from Bidens
  • Trump may be able to attack her decision to talk about change that she could have done when she was in office as VP
  • Some areas of her political career have been left open, including her border control history, her party decisions in Iran, and her part in the Russia/Ukraine war

For Harris, she is a prominent figure in American politics. With this information, her strategies for the election will most likely be a good mix.

Pros and Cons for Trump

Trump's political campaign has lots of social ties, as Trump is big in business and is an easily recognizable face. Trump has deep experience and connections in the economy, so he has lots in his favor to help him win.

Some pros to help him in the election include:

  • His experience in economics
  • His border history shows the lowest crossing numbers since the 1970s
  • Trump has had experience debating, which will help during the election and debates

Trump's presidency in 2016 was beneficial for the country. However, Harris has accused Trump of not giving enough attention to the lower classes. Harris has publicly criticized him for having no empathy for the middle class, which Kamala vows to “... support and strengthen” on day one.

Some of Trump's decisions will be questionable and could be a target during the election campaign.

Some cons that may weaken his campaign include:

  • Trump ran as a “showman” for the first couple of years of his presidency
  • Trump has had lots of legal troubles
  • Kamala may try to target his short time being involved in politics in an attempt to claim that she has more experience in the fields

When Trump takes the stage his strategies will mainly consist of offense and little attention to his defense. If Harris is skillful with her words she might catch Trump in awkward moments.

Pre-Debate Poll

A poll from the New York Times says that if everyone had to vote today, on average 47% of Americans would vote for Harris and 48% would vote for Trump.

However, this poll comes with a hefty 3% margin for error, which means that Harris's actual percentage could be between 44.2 and 49.8% and Trump's could be between 45.3 and 50.9%.

Because of all of the overlapping percentages, this effectively means that this race is anybody's game.

One major win or mistake could determine the entire election, which is why the debates will determine the election's outcome.

Post-Debate poll

A poll from the New York Times says that Harrises' support peaked on September 1st and has since decreased. And even one day after the debate, her support has gone down.

Graphic by Bridger Thompson

Thirty percent of voters polled say they need to know more about the new candidate.

According to another poll by PBS, citizens polled were asked who they thought would do a better job on four present issues: abortion, immigration, the Middle East, and the economy. According to the poll,

  • Harris is thought to do a better job on the issue of abortion, by 14%
  • Trump is thought to do a better job on the issue of immigration, by 7%
  • Trump is thought to do a better job on the issue of the Middle East, by 4%
  • Trump is thought to do a better job on the issue of the economy, by 4%

What this poll says is that Trump is ahead on most issues. However, this lead can be altered with a simple mistake, so he will need to work hard to stay on top of these issues.

If Harris wants to take the lead, she will have to express herself as being on top of these present issues. As the data shows, Trump is leading by 7% and 4%, but if Harris comes around the corner, he will have to fight to stay on top.

1st Presidential Debate Review

“The debate started with a handshake but then they held nothing back." This is how a reviewer described the September 10 presidential debate, which aired live on ABC News.

In the debate, both candidates had their strengths and weaknesses.

Trump easily defended his ideas but was often distracted. As an ABC News debate analyzer said, “he chased the rabbit down every hole.”

Harris pulled through with being skillful with her words and caused Trump to appear angry. Although she performed well, Harris struggled to answer any questions about her policy changes.

According to a New York Times poll from not long before the debate, 30% of new voters want to know more about Harris.

The debate may have ended in a stalemate, but now that the candidates have gotten an inside look at the other, they may have new strategies. All in all, there has been no significant change in the presidential race after this first debate.

The next main factor to consider in the race for the presidency will be the Vice Presidential debate, which will be on October 1 on CBS News. If that debate is a stalemate, then it falls onto the other (if there are any) presidential debates.

If the numbers in the end are the same, the election will undoubtedly be left up to the will of the American people on Election Day.

Deviled Strawberries

Ashley Hill

Deviled Strawberries might be the best bite-sized treat of all time! Strawberries get filled with a no-bake cheesecake filling and topped with graham cracker crumbs.

Ingredients

  • 3 lbs Strawberries
  • 1 Block (8oz) Cream cheese
  • 1 Cup Powdered sugar
  • 1 tsp Vanilla extract
  • ½ Cup Heavy whipping cream
  • ¼ Cup Graham cracker crumbs ( 2 graham cracker sheets)

Directions

Wash all the strawberries and dry them thoroughly.

Slice each one in half lengthwise, then slice off the hump on the back of each half so the strawberries lay flat.

In a medium mixing bowl, combine soft cream cheese, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract. Mix until smooth and creamy.

Pour in the heavy whipping cream, then whip until the mixture has slightly thickened (about 2 minutes.)

Transfer the creamy mixture to a piping or ziplock bag, then fill each strawberry with the cheesecake filling.

Sprinkle graham cracker crumbs on top before serving!

Tip: If you find yourself with a little extra filling, it makes a delicious fruit dip too! Just cover and store in your fridge! Or make more deviled strawberries… you'll be glad you had them on hand because these disappear fast!

How to make Marshmallow Popcorn

Elliot Holland-Neff

What you’ll need:

  • Microwaveable popcorn–or any popcorn (I like to have it prepared before I make the marshmallow drizzle, it’s easy that way.)
  • A pot
  • Marshmallows, big or little (If you choose to use small marshmallows I suggest you use a lot of them.)
  • Butter (Enough that it’s a puddle in the pot.)
  • Bowl
  • Spoon (To stir the butter and marshmallows together.)

Step by step:

First, put your butter in the heated pot.

Stir until fully melted. It doesn't matter what heat you use, it just needs to melt the butter .

Second, once your butter is fully melted pour your marshmallows in the pot. Stir and stir until fully everything is melted then immediately pour onto the prepared popcorn (otherwise it’ll get hard.)

Best Things to Do for Halloween

Evelyn Self

Ellensburg and the surrounding area has a variety of community activities to do around the spooky season, some of which are listed below.

Nightmare on Ohio Street

A house on Ohio Street in Ellensburg heavily decorates and has the people that live there dress up as horror movie killers and scare you while you find candy.

Lots of people go there on Halloween, but you can also go the days before to get an idea of what it will be like. Many people have visited and given it great reviews.

If you know me you may know that this is actually my house, and that I help make it a scary and fun experience by playing one of the movie characters.

But if you are sensitive to gore and horror or things like that, you probably don't want to visit.

It’s completely free so go visit the Nightmare house on Ohio Street this October.

Pumpkins

A famous Halloween tradition in America is carving pumpkins and lighting a candle inside. We call these Jack 'O Lanterns.

Traditionally, this could be done to ward off evil spirits, but nowadays it is just for fun.

Some places you can get pumpkins at are Dusty’s Nursery, Fred Meyer, and the Ellensburg Farmer’s Market.

Very Scary Badgers

Another fun place to find pumpkins is Badger Pumpkin Patch. They have movies playing, a small slide area, and a giant corn maze where you can find your way through it while being pursued by various dressed up actors.

Spirit Halloween

Lots of people love to visit the store Spirit Halloween during the spooky season. You can see all the best costumes and decorations there.

Unfortunately this year there isn’t one open in Yakima, however there are some open in Wenatchee, Moses Lake, the Tri-Cities area, and the Seattle area.

The Mad Hatter's Haunt

Every year in Yakima the Mad Hatter's Haunt sets up a different themed haunted house. From a circus to a swamp, they always have something that is guaranteed to scare or surprise you.

Even though the main event is in the haunted houses, they also have actors dressed in creepy costumes that you can take pictures with.
