Registration now open for World Urban Forum 13
The World Urban Forum, convened by UN-Habitat, is the leading global platform for dialogue and action on sustainable urbanization. The thirteenth session of the World Urban Forum (WUF13) under the theme “Housing the world: Safe and resilient cities and communities,” will take place in Baku, Azerbaijan from 17–22 May 2026 shining a spotlight on the escalating global housing crisis.
Nearly 3 billion people live in inadequate conditions, including 1.1 billion in informal settlements and more than 300 million experiencing homelessness. WUF13 will explore how housing can act as a catalyst for inclusion, resilience and climate adaptation, with discussions covering integrated planning, land and tenure security, and inclusive governance. Held at the midpoint of the New Urban Agenda, the Forum will also contribute to the Secretary-General’s 2026 report on its implementation.
WUF13 opens applications for partner-led events
Partner-led events are a core feature of the Forum, offering stakeholders a platform to share experiences, innovations and solutions that advance sustainable urban development. Applications are now open and must be submitted by 27 January 2026. Partners may submit one proposal per category across seven event formats.

In São Paulo’s Jaraguá Indigenous Territory, Guarani Mbya twins Anderson and André work as Indigenous sanitation agents, combining technical sanitation work with ancestral respect for water. Trusted by residents, they improve wells, toilets, drainage and waste systems, advocate to authorities, and teach that “water is life” and central to community well-being.
Building back safer schools to keep Afghan girls learning
After earthquakes destroyed her school in Herat, nine-year-old Sunbul feared she would never study safely again. UN-Habitat, funded by the Special Trust Fund for Afghanistan (STFA), rebuilt and strengthened damaged schools, adding safe classrooms, sanitation, and climate-resilient structures for 16,800 students. “When I entered the new classroom, it was pure delight,”says Sunbul with a bright smile. Today, the atmosphere at Chahar Dara High School is completely different. Sunbul and her classmates feel safe again and eager to learn.
