IN THE SPOTLIGHT

Year 5 trip to the Museum of Power

On Wednesday 28th February, year 5 headed off to the Museum of Power in Maldon.

We had a great time taking part in various workshops that supported our understanding of Forces and Magnets in the grounds of the former water pump station.

We had fun sorting through various materials to test if they were magnetic or not and discussed why? We found ‘Magnetic North’ using home-made compasses from pieces of cork, bowls of water needles and a magnet. We were mystified and bamboozled with science by an energetic and enthusiastic scientist who explained what makes electricity and all things electromagnet related. We had a chance to dabble with centrifugal forces with some soaking consequences. We watched one of the mighty old pumping engines in action. And finally, we had a chance to test our powers of observation in the model village of Astaria!

The children thoroughly enjoyed themselves and participated with great enthusiasm.

Tatiana said, “I wish we could go again as it was fun and interesting.”

Whilst Josh said, “The model village was stunning.”

And Lucy said “It was great as we could interact with science.”

My only regret is that we didn’t get to spend more time looking at some of the interesting exhibits and interactive displays at the museum.

Thank you to all the parents that assisted us on the day as without your continued support we would not be able to attend such events. The museum also runs several fun days throughout the year with all manner of exhibits and fun events to take part in which many of the children would thoroughly enjoy.

A fun day for all.

Mr Dunne, Mrs Lee and Miss Pearce

Year 3 visitor

This week, Mrs Chatterton, a former teacher and Deputy Headteacher of the Academy visited year 3 to talk about what the school used to be like and how it has changed over the year. She showed the children photos and objects from the past including how the uniform has changed and how teaching has changed. The children were fascinated to learn about how all the classes had to share one TV between them and had no internet! The level of curiosity and excitement was high as so many children had questions. We really enjoyed the visit, and both staff and children alike enjoyed the reunion.

World Book Day

On Friday 8th March, we will be celebrating World Book Day. We have got a representative from our local book store (Jacqson Diego Story Emporium) coming in to read stories to every child across the day as well as other exciting activities, such as book treasure trails and creative writing. At the end of the day, there will be a pop-up book shop in the school hall where your child can trade their £1 book voucher for a specially commissioned World Book Day book. Or, they can use the voucher for a £1 discount on a variety of books that will be there too.

This year also sees the return of the Masked Reader. We are running this as a competition to raise funds for our Whole Class Reading books, used during Reading lessons. Your child can enter the competition for as little as £1 – more information will be coming soon!

Furthermore, every child from Year 1 to Year 6 will get the opportunity to apply for a free Blue Peter Book Badge. They will complete the tasks in school next Friday then bring their application forms home. Please complete the details on the front of the form and return to school by Friday 22nd March. We will send the applications to Blue Peter in bulk and your child’s badge will be sent directly to you. Having a Blue Peter badge and valid badge card (which will be sent to you) can gain your child free entry into over 200 Blue Peter Badge attractions around the country such as theme parks, zoos and castles.

On Thursday 7th March, we will be having a special World Book Day themed lunch, please see the menu below.
