A Message from WESD Superintendent Dr. Paul Stanton
Greetings WESD Families and Staff,
Happy New Year and welcome back! I hope you enjoyed your winter break and took the time to relax and rejuvenate. We have officially entered the second semester, and I want to start the new year by reminding each of you how very grateful I am for your ongoing support and commitment to the district. Let’s continue on this journey together and finish out the school year strong as one WESD Family.
In this first update of 2024, you will read about yesterday’s District Spelling Bee and Kindergarten Open House events, a reminder on tomorrow’s Teacher Interview Fair and our upcoming Future Middle Schooler Nights.
Congratulations to the District Bee Spellers
Thirty-three students participated in the 2024 WESD Spelling Bee yesterday, which lasted eleven rounds to crown our champion. Congratulations to first place winner Cora V., fifth grader at Lookout Mountain Elementary School, for correctly spelling the championship word "Bethesda." An excellent job to Maddox C., sixth grader at Tumbleweed Elementary School, for coming in second place!
Congratulations to the six additional students who will be moving on to the Regional Spelling Bee with our two finalists including Elisieus V. at Abraham Lincoln Traditional School, Xyle J. at Arroyo School, Erick R. at Cactus Wren Elementary School, Cavin L. at Palo Verde Middle School, Natalia M. at Roadrunner Elementary School and Gavin C. at Sunburst Elementary School.
The WESD will host the Regional Spelling Bee, which will take place on February 8th at the WESD Administrative Center. The top two spellers from the Regional Bee will advance to the State Spelling Bee in March.
Good luck to our top eight spellers competing in the Regional Bee, and congratulations to all of the students who participated in the WESD Spelling Bee yesterday. The WESD Family is so proud of you!
The WESD Welcomed Future Kindergarten Students
We had a fantastic time meeting our future kindergartners and their families yesterday at Kindergarten Open House! Thank you to all of our teachers, administrators and staff members for hosting great events and warmly welcoming your newest students and families. I know the events were successful in helping prepare and excite our future students for a WESD education.
If you or anyone you know has a future kindergartner and missed the event at one of our neighborhood schools, please click here for more information on kindergarten enrollment including how to register online. You can also visit the WESD Welcome and Registration Center, located at 3200 W. Cholla St., to register in person. We can’t wait to welcome the Class of 2037 later this year!
