My proposal from my final project relates back to my personal aesthetic by incorporating elements of a city. I chose to do a view of a city apartment looking out onto the skyline of a city. My inspiration came from Yuraitenn's work. Their work consists of spaces in the real world some of which including an isometric perspective.
critical concepts
In this project I plan to use the concept of mimesis (representations that mimic the real world) to create a representation of an apartment in the city. Both mine and Yuiartenn's work use mimesis because our art conveys ideas in the real world. Along with that, the idea of aesthetics(contemplation and judgement of sensory expressions) will also be used throughout the use of the isometric grid. This stylized choice of perspective helps convey the aesthetic in both mine and Yuiartenn's work. The idea of culture(the human development of knowledge, beliefs, and behaviors that depend upon social learning) will also be. used in this project. The image will convey a living space. that people will be able to recognize as an apartment in the city with a skyline view. Both mine and Yuiartenn's work depict images that are recognized in a society.
Calendar
To start off I completed a basic sketch of my original idea that I plan to build off. Next I plan to gather images of buildings to draw inspiration from. Then after gathering images for inspiration. I plan to assemble a more in depth sketch of my idea. After the sketch is completed I plan to create. a grid in illustrator to get an accurate perspective, use the shape tool to build the space and finally to tie it all together I plan to make a custom pattern of bricks or a similar industrial texture to add to the space.
Growth from feedback
After listening to the feedback given to me, I noticed that I had some issues with perspective. The window was in a different perspective than the rest of the room which threw the project off. To fix this, I moved the top part of the window to the bottom and made both sides of the window the same colors as the outer walls. Another thing was that some of the edges did not align. To fix this I expanded the object and aligned them up to one another to complete the look.
Aesthetics

Iterations
Culture
The inspiration for my aesthetic iterations comes from Brian Edwards Millers' works. His use of similar colors throughout a single composition. In my works I used a neutral color palette throughout each iteration. The uses of a continuous color palette can also be found in background shapes. All of the colors used in the background use pastel colors that are similar and tie into one another. Along with that Millers uses predominately sharp edge shapes. His works often contain triangles and rectangles with sharp edges. I used this idea in my works by making the edges of the buildings have sharp edges and by creating them using squares without rounded edges.
Theory
In both mine and Millers' works the idea of aesthetics (contemplation and judgement of sensory expressions)is prevalent. Both works display a projection of our artistic style through the use of shapes and colors. In both works colors are selected with intention behind them and shapes were purposely made to appear rigid. Another idea presented in both mine and Millers' works is the idea of icons. In my works the drawings of the building serve as a representation of actual building in real life. Similarly is Millers' works the idea is presented through the drawings of various objects such as cars mountains and trees.
Practice
In both works there could be use of anchor points adjustments. In order to get slanted edges in my works the anchor points of the shapes would have needed to be adjusted. In Millers' works anchor point adjustments could have been used in creating rounded edges or creating the slants in the corners of the mountains and rocks in the background.
Growth from feedback
After listening to critiques, it was pointed out that some of the edges on the buildings are not as clean as they should be. Some of the roofs of the buildings did not line up with the edge. I fixed this in illustrator by adjusting the size of the shapes and manipulating the anchor points to make them line up.
Remediation
Inspiration
Culture
The inspiration for my remediation works comes from Lisk Feng's Shanghai Xintandi illustration collection. Her works use a limited color palette while still creating an interactive and immersive illustration. I drew inspiration from her limited color palette and busy patterns in the back. I used a basic color palette consisting of primary colors and black in order to emphasize the shoes in my iterations. Along with the color palette, I took inspiration from the busy background patterns. I made a background consisting of bright yellow shoes that are overlapping and repeating.
Theory
In both mine and Feng's works the idea of connotation (literal meaning of a word, object, image, sound)is presented. In Feng's work the idea is presented through the depiction of a busy cityscape. The culture associated with this depiction is the face paced lifestyle associated with the city. In my works the shoes serve as a representation for navigating a city and keeping up with the rhythm of the urban environment. The idea of encoding (to establish meaning in a creative work intended to communicate with an audience). In Feng's work the idea is presented through the representation of the city. The meaning being established is the feel of an urban landscape. The depiction allows for the viewer to understand the rhythm of a city. In my works the idea trying to be established is the face pace of a city. The shoes serve as a symbol of keeping up with the city rhythm that is being conveyed to the viewer.
Practice
In both mine and Feng's works the idea of pattern creation is used. In Feng's work there is a pattern of different pop up charts and signs this allows for the emphasis to be on the figure in the drawing. In my works the use of pattern creation is presented through the yellow shoes used in the background. The yellow pattern of shoes allows for the larger black shoes to be the main focal point.
Remix
Inspiration
Iterations
culture
The inspiration for my remix iterations comes from Anna Bond's works. In her works she uses a lot of natural elements and patterns. These more natural elements juxtapose the man-made elements found in urban areas. After focusing on urban areas, I was interested in taking my remix in this direction to highlight this juxtaposition. The snail serves as a way to highlight the difference between the fast pace of the urban scene and the slow pace of a snail. In Bond's works, she takes a more simplistic approach and does not display overwhelming patterns and colors. This idea is presented in my works as well. The photographs used are very simplistic and do not contain overwhelming patterns.
Theory
In both mine and Anna Bond's works, the idea of mimesis ( representations that mimic the real world) is presented. In Anna Bond's works there are many layers of this. For starters, the idea is presented through an artist creating the floral mural. The concept of flowers was derived from nature. The second layer is presented in Bond's works where she captures the painting derived from nature. She adds her own elements as well. In My works the idea is presented through the hand holding the snail. The two images were combined in Photoshop inspired by the idea of a hand holding a snail. Along with that the idea of remix culture (a tendency to emulate, appropriate, and rework creations) is conveyed. Anna Bond takes different aspects such as the wall mural and various objects and combines them into one work. She used the artist who painted the mural's work and added her own objects for a new composition. This idea is presented in my work through the combining of images. The public domain images of the city skyline, the snail, and the hand were all combined to form this new composition.
Practice
In both Anna bond's and my works make use of color adjustments and contrast. In Bond's works she somewhat darkens the images and ups the contrast so important elements are more prominent. This idea is used in my works as well. Color was adjusted so the image appears darker and the contrast was also raised so the important aspects are more prominent.
Growth from feedback
After reading the feedback on my remix iterations, I learned that the lack of background was unappealing. So in order to fix that I added a background with a color sampled from the snail shell. Along with that I saw that the lack of shadows on the hand looked unrealistic and did not blend well. To fix that I used a soft brush and painted on a shadow in order to blend the images together.
Myth
Inspiration
Iterations
Culture
The inspiration for my Myths comes from Romain Trystram's works. His works are focused on urban landscapes which is something I'm drawn to as stated in the personal aesthetic statement. His works also make use of sharp lines and shapes that are not overwhelming to the viewer. His minimalistic approach to shapes and lines is something I am also drawn to. Romain Trystram's works focus mainly on urban landscapes and show the rhythm in the city. His works consist of sharp lines and shapes that guide the eye around the works. Despite the bright color palette, the pictures are not overwhelming and somewhat minimalistic. With the idea of the guiding lines in Trystram's work, I created a swirl like pattern in my myth iteration with the goal of guiding the eye towards the middle. Along with that I used the idea of crisp shapes on the top and bottom corners of the myth iteration. The myth represents my personal aesthetic because it consists of neutral colors. Despite the minimal color palette I took a more complicated approach and added the swirl pattern in the middle.
.
Theory
While Trystram's works are illustrations, the idea of Myth of photographic truth ( the assumption that photographic representation convey reality but due to subjective framing and editing, there is an inherent lack of accuracy) is presented in both mine and Romain Trystarm's work. In Trystram's works the idea is presented. The images convey a city but I is missing many things found in a city. For example we don't see cars or people walking. The city sort of looks "cleaned up" so it just shows the structures in the city. The idea of a city appearing empty Is unrealistic because there is always some sort of hustle in urban environments. In my myths the idea is presented in the editing. The image of the building can be identified but the swirl pattern in the center makes it unrealistic and warps the sense of reality. The idea of culture (the human development of knowledge, beliefs, and behaviors that depend upon social learning) is present in both mine and Trystam's works. Both worlds convey images of buildings found in cities, these images are what most people would collectively agree are found in an urban landscapes. They are what people would expect to see in these environments and are used to seeing in daily life.
Practice
While Trystram's works are illustrations the same concepts can be applied to a photograph. In the illustrations Trystram uses the idea of layer masks and opacity in the background of the images. For example in the clouds you can see a gradient behind them because of the layering mask with reduced opacity. Along with that there is use of blending and blurring. In the clouds the edges are blurred to blend in better with the gradient background. These concepts relate back to my works because the use of layering and blurring is used. In the windows of the building I added in clouds using layering. The blending came in when I used a soft light layer to make the lines not as sharp and look blended into the composition.
personal aesthetic
I am drawn to the simplicity and elegance of neutral colors often found in urban demographics. This minimalistic color pallet offers a clean and crisp feel that does not overwhelm the eye. When combined with small bits of color, it provides a nice contrast that is not too busy. The clean feel that these colors bring add on to the smooth natural rhythm of a city. The urban scene presents an upbeat and fast but smooth rhythm, but when combined with the simplicity of the neutral color pallet it makes for a perfect balance. Along with minimalistic colors, the simple patterns and crisp lines help add on the clean feel. Sharp lines and simple patterns do not put a strain on the viewers eyes, but rather offer organization and precision that is pleasing to the eye.
