Nukumea Newsletter Term 3 Week 7 2024

Kia ora koutou,

We have had a jam packed last two weeks with lots of exciting events and learning. I need to start off by congratulating our Jump Jam team for their awesome performance. Their dedication, sense of joy and the great way they supported each other, shone through. The team was rewarded with two prizes: Sportsmanship and Spirit of Jump Jam. Congratulations to Miss Everett and the team!

Learning Support

On August 29th, the New Zealand Education Institute held their first Learning Support Awareness Day, which they hope to hold annually. The level of government support for students who need a little extra help with their learning, or a different learning programme to others, has been an on-going issue in education. This day aims to draw collective attention to the funding deficit in this area and has the specific aims of increasing the number of teacher aides available in the classroom and the number of support specialists available to provide guidance to teachers. At Nukumea we love having a diverse population of learners and fully support the drive to do more in this area, so we can continue to meet these needs effectively as our school grows.

If this is an area that interests you and you would like to know more, please see Joyce in the office for a facts sheet about the current state of learning support in New Zealand.

Our Very First Cross Country Event!

On Thursday 5th September the weather, which had been on and off all week, decided to be on our side on the big Cross Country day! This was our first Nukumea Cross Country event, and our Nukumea runners made us very proud.

The day started with our morning bell song ‘Chariots of Fire’, which more than likely only got the staff excited, and the children wondering why we loved the song choice of the day! :) Excitement grew as we went about our day, with children beginning to feel nervous for the big race. But, we would have had no idea that nerves were involved, as our zooming runners gave it their very all.

Our Nukumea children did a huge run around the whole field and school (with our senior students doing two laps), along the way hopping over the hurdles, battling through the crawling nets, tackling the climbing wall, weaving through the cones and stepping through the ladder. There were lots of smiling faces from our competitors and lots of fabulous cheer from the crowd. Well done to all the students who participated in the races. You really did give it your all.

Before and After School Care

It has been awesome to see our onsite Before and After School Care start up. The children who are attending are loving their time there. Rochelle and her team are very much in line with our Nukumea ways.

Tackling Tech

On Monday, September 16th from 7-8:30pm Holly Jean Brooker from The Parenting Place, along with Andrew Cowie of Nukumea Primary will be joining forces to offer evidence based advice as well as a practical guide to tackling the challenges of technology. This session is aimed at parents and caregivers of children and youth from Years 3 to 10. However, if you have children younger than Year 3, it will also be useful. This is very much an event for adults, so we ask that you not bring your children along. The event will be held at Orewa College - Arts & Events Centre. For more information and tickets, please follow this link.

If you have any other questions, please don't hesitate to contact andrewc@nukumea.school.nz

Harvest Hub

Design by Freyja Bowers (Korimako student)

Harvest Hub is an afternoon event we will be holding in the school hall on Tuesday, September 17th. Students will have an opportunity to prepare, share, and sample some of the produce we have been growing from our very own garden.

From 3:00 until 4:00pm, we also extend this opportunity to YOU, Nukumea parents and caregivers. We will send out some more information and reminders about this event through HERO next week. For now, mark your calendars for Sept 17th and get ready for some delicious home grown Nukumea kai (food).

Auckland FC

We know that we have a few budding football stars amongst our students and many others that enjoy playing football with their friends. That means there may be a few families out there who are excited about the new professional football club Auckland FC starting in the A League this year.

Auckland FC are running a promotion for schools where we can get discounted ticket prices for a school group booking. We are not sure of the specific game date yet, but if this is something you are interested in please complete the survey here, so I can give them our interested numbers next week.

We hope you all enjoy your weekend!
