August & September 2023 @BVNLibrary The 23-24 school year started off with a frenzy as we saw every single student on the first Friday of school. We welcomed everyone back and dove right in. Read on to see all of the awesome learning at BVN Library!

Library checkout

Students in ALL ELA classes came through the library in the first 3 days of school! We scheduled school pictures to take place in the library so as students came to take their pictures, they could also browse the shelves and check something out! Our self check stations aren't up and running yet, but we still managed to check out to so many students. We also spent our days of the new school year doing book talks and book passes to get some new materials into the hands of our readers. There were so many sweet students excited to see us and happy to be back at school with their friends and teachers. We handed out stickers to every student proclaiming our love for our students! BVN students always know that BVN Library (and their librarians) love them!

Freshmen Orientation

Students in all ELA 9 & HELA 9 classes came to the library for orientation. They played an IRL game where they moved around the library looking for items that seemed like they didn't belong. When they found one, they scanned the QR code with an iPad and learned something about our library program. Students were surprised to learn that they can checkout as many books as they want and that we have so many materials and resources including games, instruments, and craft supplies for them to check out! We finished the day with a trivia game with some sweet treats for the winners.

Starbooks

As students in AP Lang started to read American Born Chinese, we did a book pass focusing on graphic novels.

Students rotated through 6 stations of 6 different types of graphic novels.

Students were excited to see the different types of books, the different styles of art, and the different genres that they were interested to see in graphic novel format.

Debate

Advanced Debate students came to the library to get a refresher on best practices in research. We discussed the differences between internet articles, database articles, and peer-reviewed articles.

We played a game in teams where students used google prompts to find various types of articles.

For each prompt, students found internet, database, and peer-reviewed articles. We shared our findings and discovered some hilarious topics.

If you haven't heard of "panda diplomacy", try googling it and find out what our debate students discovered while playing this game!

Culinary Essentials & Baking and Pastry

Students in Culinary Essentials played a Breakout game that we made about food safety.

Students in Baking and Pastry played a game based on measurement.

Students enjoyed learning these principles in a fun format.

Economics

Students in Mr. Breedlove's Economics classes used library databases to research topics with the purpose of creating an infographic. Students did a great job applying the principles we taught for good design with ethical use of information. Students tend to include too much text in these projects, but these students did a great job of being succinct and using graphics to depict important information.

Physical Science

Government

Students in Mr. Dudley's and Mrs. Chugg's Government classes learned about media bias before beginning a project about current events. Students evaluated some sources for bias and then used the Ad Fontes Interactive Media Bias chart to evaluate the sources of their own current events. Students left with a better understanding of the tools available to verify the information that they encounter in the world.
