NPPS Newsletter END OF TERM 1, 2024

Smoking Ceremony starting the 125th Anniversary Fair

Principal's Message

As we wrap up the first term, I am filled with gratitude for the incredible support and dedication shown by our school community. This term may have been brief, but it has been exceptionally productive.

I extend sincere thanks to all those who generously volunteered their time and resources to enhance North Perth Primary School. Whether through serving on the Board or P&C, or contributing in various ways to the success of our 125th Anniversary Fair and busy bee, your contributions have made a lasting impact on our students and school community.

A special acknowledgment goes to the tireless efforts of our organising team, including Tarryn Stain, Thea Myles, Michael Krachler, Ross Duckham, Paul Foley, Julie Fort, Susanna Iuliano, and others who dedicated themselves over the past 12 months. Your unwavering commitment and hard work in organising such a remarkable event is admirable.

Thank you once again for your invaluable support and dedication. Together, we continue to make North Perth Primary School a place of happiness with lasting memories for our students.

I would like to wish you all a safe and happy Easter and holiday period. Our staff will be using the holiday break to disconnect, relax and recharge for Term 2.

Just a few snapshots from the day

Feedback from a past student:

Congratulations and thank you to you, your staff, parents, helpers, sponsors and kids who put together and delivered what has to be one of the best School Fairs that could possibly be put together. I and other members of the “Class of ‘ 54” were so proud to have been able to share in the day. The work in the Hall to present the history of the school was a testament to the hard work of those who put it together. I wish you had been there late in the afternoon when the Jan Mitchell and her elder brother (siblings of the legendary Mr Mitchell) discovered three photographs of their father) very moving. Other members of our group enjoyed contributing to the History Walks. Again “well done" to Susanna and the staff member who organised the walks, the stalls, food outlets, music, competitions, fireworks and displays helped make the day memorable, as well as watching the students eagerly participating. Again, thank you and well done.

The organising team at the end of a long day

The fair raised nearly $44,000, which will cover overhead costs and the installation of the original door on the Angove Street side of the school. Any excess funds will go towards organising additional events for the 125th Anniversary celebration this year.

Union Industrial Action - possible teacher strike

As you may be already aware, the State School Teachers’ Union WA has issued further Executive directives regarding industrial actions. If there is no agreement in principle reached concerning the 2023 EBA negotiations by Friday, April 19th, a half-day stop work action is scheduled for the morning of Tuesday, April 23rd.

We will provide updates on the implications of this situation as it develops.

An exciting update from the Art Room!

To commemorate the momentous milestone of our school's 125th anniversary, we are excited to embark on a special art project.

The 125th Anniversary Art Project will involve hosting an Artist in Residence for four sessions per class next term. Our artist will work with students to create a unique sculptural work that will stand in the now vacant garden space to the east of the newly reopened entrance to the school, facing Angove Street.

Our Artist in Residence is Jodie Davidson, a Creative Practitioner, Consultant and Project Manager who has considerable experience working in schools to create long lasting, beautiful pieces that express each schools’ values and culture. She will work with me and our classes to develop a project that is unique to our school, and that represents what being 125 years old means to our current students.

These sessions, which will run in Visual Arts lesson time for students in Years 1 -6, will not only provide our students with a unique learning opportunity but also contribute to the enrichment of our school's artistic culture. Jodie will work closely with our students, guiding them through the creative process and helping them to express themselves through various art forms.

By participating in this project, our students will have the chance to explore their creativity, develop their artistic skills, and gain valuable insights from a professional artist. This initiative aligns with curriculum and with our school's commitment to providing holistic education and fostering a love for the arts among our students.

At this stage we have some loose ideas of how the art work will look, but it will be very much guided by the students, so the outcome is yet to be discovered.

We aim to install our 3D sculptural piece in the September school holidays.

Over the next term, we will hold some fundraising initiatives to help fund this project, and we would appreciate your support so that we can make this amazing project happen for your school.

We are planning an 1899 dress up day. Start planning your outfit for Thursday 2 May.

If you feel excited to be involved with the project in any way, shape or form, please do not hesitate to contact me at sarah.hanlon@education.wa.edu.au to express your interest.

Warm regards, Sarah Hanlon - Visual Arts Specialist Teacher

P&C Survey

As a newly formed P&C exec we are very keen to invite and respond to the voices of our parent community. We were drawn to the P&C to see how we can best support our kids at the school, and would love to know your thoughts as to what that could look like.

We appreciate you taking 5-10min to respond to the following survey—your thoughts will shape what we focus our fundraising and engagement activities on this year. Thanks for your time and enjoy the Easter holidays.
