Construction Updates: Māngere West Cycling Improvements

Stage 3 works is nearing completion

Work along Bader Drive is progressing well, and Stage 3 is now close to completion. This milestone will bring us even closer to delivering a fully connected cycleway through Māngere West.

Our crews are working at multiple locations at the same time to finish construction sooner and minimise disruption for the community.

Please note timelines and staging plans are indicative and may change.

✅ What's completed in Stage 3?

New cycle/pedestrian crossing at the corner Comet Crescent Street/Bader Drive
New shared path/two-way cycleway on Bader Drive
Hinau Road / McKenzie Road intersection and footpath upgrades
New in-lane bus stop and shelter on McKenzie Road
New footpath and shared path along McKenzie Road

🚧 Current Works

Location 1: Corner of Comet Crescent / Bader Drive

We're upgrading the footpath and installing a new cycle/pedestrian crossing.

Location 2: Corner of Coronation Road / Kiwi Esplanade (Streets for People Project)

We're upgrading the footpath, adding new kerbs and a new cycle crossing

Location 3: Bader Drive

We're installing concrete cycleway separators to safely separate cyclists from traffic and pedestrians along Bader Drive.

Why we’re doing this:

  • To make it safer and easier for people walking and cycling, and to connect the new cycleway with Māngere Town Centre, Moyle Park Path and the SH20 cycleway to the airport, while also improving transport options for Māngere now and in the future.

What’s next?

Location: Dunstall Place / Coronation Road intersection

What we're doing: We’re making permanent safety improvements at the intersection to replace the temporary measures currently in place. This includes:

  • realigning the center line to better guide all road users.
  • resurfacing the road to remove outdated line markings.
  • adding white dotted lines at the entrance of Dunstall Place.
  • installing reflective markers to help guide drivers at night and in wet conditions.

🛠️ He Pātai, He Whakautu – This Month’s Most Asked Question❓

Q: When will the work be completed?

A: We’re nearing the finishing touches of construction, with completion planned for mid October. That means we’re only weeks away from a new cycling connection between Māngere Bridge and Māngere Town Centre.

The changes link people riding to schools, parks, churches, Auckland Airport, and other key destinations in Māngere and beyond.

We know construction has been disruptive at times, so we want to sincerely thank you for your patience and understanding as we’ve been carrying out this important mahi.

🚧 Walmsley Road Bridge Closure – October 2025

From 4 October 2025, Walmsley Road between Hall Avenue and McKenzie Drive will be temporarily closed to vehicles.

This closure is part of Auckland Council’s Healthy Waters programme to reduce flooding risks for nearby homes and streets around Te Ararata Creek. To do this, HEB Construction will replace the Walmsley Road Bridge with a new structure that allows greater water flow beneath it.

Preparing for the closure : To get ready for the change, Auckland Council contractors have installed temporary traffic calming measures nearby. These include:

  • Speed humps and a mini roundabout

These can be seen along Bader Drive, Elmdon Street and Hall Avenue, helping to keep traffic safe and steady during the bridge replacement.

We appreciate the community’s patience during this important mahi, which will help protect homes and improve resilience against future flooding.

🐾 Riders of Māngere

Meet Maxy, Māngere’s four-legged cycling star!

Maxy loves nothing more than riding the cycleways in Māngere with his owner, Supa, enjoying the fresh air and all the pats from locals.

"Woof woof" - which Maxy says "Keep the wheels spinning"

When you’re out riding on the new paths, keep an eye out for Supa and Maxy proving that Māngere is truly the cycling capital of the pacific for everyone.

🌳 Explore further north on the Southwestern Cycleway

Enjoying riding around the bike paths of Māngere and wondering where else you can get to by bike? The Māngere bike network is one part of Auckland’s growing network of paths, making it easier to bike around the city.

More destinations easily accessible by bike await across Ngā Hau Māngere Bridge. Ride over the bridge and turn left to join up with the Southwestern path. From here, you can roll through to Hillsborough, Mount Roskill, Avondale, Mt Albert, Point Chevalier and beyond!

Wayfinding signs are placed along the way to help get you to where you need to go.

🌊 Te Ararata Stream Team – Rangatahi Leading the Way

This month we celebrate the mahi of the Te Ararata Stream Team, a group of passionate rangatahi working to raise awareness about our local waterways and the importance of flood resilience.

Anmol, Deon and Etina are among the young leaders proudly representing the wider Stream Team. Together, they are guiding their peers and whānau through education and engagement activities that highlight how caring for our awa and streams is vital to keeping Māngere safe from flooding, while also protecting the ecosystems that thrive within them.

Their leadership reminds us that looking after te taiao is not just about today but about safeguarding the wellbeing of future generations.

🧩 Innovating Streets – Māngere East

Construction is now underway on the Innovating Streets Māngere East Project, turning the 2021 community trial into permanent improvements.

From 29 September to late November 2025, Auckland Transport and contractors are replacing planter boxes with new kerb extensions and traffic islands, upgrading crossings and speed humps, and adding drains and concrete surfaces to improve safety and durability .

Where the work is happening:

  • Royton Avenue
  • Yates Road
  • Fergusson Street
  • Parts of Chalfont Street and Chadwick Crescent

What this means for the community:

  • Safer and more visible pedestrian crossings
  • Slower traffic speed and reduced crash risk
  • Easier access for people with prams, wheelchairs, and mobility aids
  • Healthier, people-focused streets that support active travel
  • Traffic impacts will include temporary detours, closures, and limited parking during construction, with traffic controllers on site to help residents and drivers safely move through the area

🎉 Bike valet at the Māngere Bridge Fun Run

Over 50 people arrived by bike at the Māngere Bridge Fun Run on Sunday, 28 September.

The AT team were on site to welcome riders and provide secure bike parking while people took part in the event. The first 50 bikes also received a free safety check from our mechanic, who helped with gears, tyres, chains, and brakes to keep people riding smoothly.

AT also gave away vouchers for brand-new bikes as spot prizes, which were won by three lucky participants on the day.

It was a great opportunity to support more people choosing to travel by bike and to work alongside the Māngere Bridge Fun Run team.

Social media highlight

In this months social media content, a local rider shows us how easy it is to cycle the Airport Shared Path, finishing the ride at Banh Mi Boy, home to some of the best bánh mì in Auckland.

It’s a reminder that cycling isn’t just about commuting. It’s about exploring, discovering, and enjoying the best of our local food and culture along the way.
