Newsletter Moments Fall 2024

Welcome!

It means a lot to me that you are here. Photography has brought me to destinations I never imagined I would go, introduced me to the most talented and beautiful souls, and awarded me countless, life-changing wildlife encounters. I am beyond thankful and humble for everything photography has awarded me. I am truly honored to share my journey with you.

2024 has been a busy year filled with workshops, presentations, awards, a few disappointments, and the most incredible adventure I have ever experienced. And the year isn't over yet!

In March, I embarked on a journey to the High Arctic alongside my co-pilot and partner in life, Cole (a.k.a. Andrew C. Strom). Visiting Svalbard, the top of the world, was an incredible, life-changing experience. Months later, I still do not have the capacity to process what I witnessed...not to mention the thousands of photos I took! Seeing the unbelievable beauty of Svalbard is something that will be with me forever. If I did not have the photos, I would not believe it was real. I do not have the words to explain what I saw and felt, so I will share a few images from April 1st, the day I met my first polar bear. No, it was not an April Fool's joke!

Enduring bone-chilling temperatures of -40 degrees, ❄️ this day brought the most pain I have ever experienced for the sake of photography. It was so, so worth it and I would absolutely do it again in a heartbeat.

The Polar Bear — He is tenacious. He is true. He is curious. He is cunning. He is intelligent. He is intuitive. He is focused. He is fierce. He is adaptable. He is agile. He is hungry. He is honest. He is majestic. He is mighty. He is relentless. He is resilient. He is lonely. He is loved. He changed my life.

The Rüppell's Griffon

Did you know...The Rüppell's griffon vulture is the world's highest-flying bird!! Rüppell's griffon vultures have been documented as having reached heights of over 36,000 feet (10,973 meters) above sea level. The adaptation that allows this species to fly so high is an alteration of one of its proteins, which allows the bird to fly efficiently despite lower pressure and available oxygen.

Vultures are not often thought about when discussing wildlife conservation. However, vultures play a vital role in conservation and many vulture species are endangered. Vultures can spot a carcass from miles away. Rangers and other wildlife will use circling vultures as a signal of an animal carcass in the area. Rhino poachers, for example, will often kill vultures in an effort to hide their tracks and buy more time after a wildlife crime.

This critically endangered species is vital to Africa's ecology, flying long distances to eat carrion and keep ecosystems healthy. This species has declined rapidly, going from a species of least concern in 2004 to near threatened in 2007 and critically endangered in 2012. Habitat loss, declines in food sources, hunting for trade, persecution and poisoning are factors in their precipitous decline.

How can we help?

Practice ecotourism by being an advocate for the environment when you’re on vacation. During your travels, support, visit or volunteer with organizations that protect wildlife. Shop smart too! Avoid buying products made from animals, which could support poaching and the illegal wildlife trade.

Share the story of this fascinating and important species with others. Simply raising awareness about this species can contribute to its overall protection.

Photo Fact!

In 1826, French scientist Joseph Nicéphore Niépce, took what is believed to be the first photograph, titled "View from the Window at Le Gras".

The process of taking a photo used to be much more complicated. To capture this moment in time, Niépce wanted to use a light-sensitive material so the light itself would "etch" the image for him. After much struggle and trial and error, he finally found the perfect formula.
