Lincoln Minster School Newsletter June 28th 2024

Head's Message

Mr Jon Tyler

You know it's been a wonderful week when one long-standing member of our community tells you that Sports Day was the best they've ever seen and another says the same of the Summer Concert the next day. It's not just the sun that has shone brightly this week - our pupils and staff have been outstanding.

Sports Day took on an ambitious new format this year, spanning the whole day and involving the entire Senior School. There were lessons to be learnt, and I was sorry to hear that parents missed out on the morning field events, but it was otherwise a fantastic day for our community.

And I say that not only because I proudly became the school welly wanging champion. Or at least I was proud - until I was swiftly beaten by Grace and Harry in Year 9, and Mr Seymour decided to tell me 'on an unrelated note' that people in Russia just let Vladimir Putin do well when he enters competitions.

Thankfully, I forgot all about that interesting comparison during the superb concert on Wednesday evening. The Recital Hall looked stunning, dressed beautifully in a way that I have never seen before, and our pupils more than lived up to the setting with some of the best music that I've heard at LMS.

As ever, we've had so much more going on this week that I can't possibly cover here: a Science Fair, a visit from Kazakhstani teachers, a FOLMS Golf Day, the end of exams (for this year at least), and I am writing all of this on Thursday before what I'm sure will be an enjoyable Year 11 Prom tomorrow.

Good luck to the brave Mr and Mrs W for hosting the afterparty, and I hope you all have a more peaceful weekend than they will.

Preparatory Head's Message

Mr Mark Burton

Dear Parents,

With the summer holiday racing towards us, next week’s newsletter is planned to be an end of term special. So, I find myself writing my final piece to you.

My first association with Lincoln Minster School came in 2012, when I was asked to come in and do a period of supply work for a term. I had never stepped in to an independent school before and, with ideas of Hogwarts in my head, I had no idea what to expect.

From the outset, I loved it and would have loved to stay but, unfortunately, there were no opportunities to do so at that point. When a vacancy arose two years later, I jumped at the chance to return and was fortunate enough to be appointed as Head of English for the Prep School.

It felt like a homecoming.

I was fortunate enough to join a wonderful team under the leadership of Fiona Thomas. I liked her immediately and we quickly established a strong working relationship. We shared the same values and vision for the school and when I was fortunate enough to be appointed Head, on her retirement, I like to think that I’ve built on that vision and taken the school along a pathway that has led it to its position today. One of which I am extremely proud.

I have been extremely lucky. Lucky to have had Victoria Whitworth, my right arm (and a literal human dynamo), at my side and a remarkable team of talented, dedicated and caring staff on the journey with me. What has been created here has been achieved by this wonderful team and, to them, I would like to say a huge thank you. It has been a real honour to work with you all and I’m proud to have you as friends as well as valued colleagues.

Above all, of course, what makes a school is its children. At Lincoln Minster School we are blessed with such wonderful children. They want to learn, they care for each other, they have passion and enthusiasm. I hope that the work we have done with them has helped and will continue to help to build and mould them into the fine young people that they are, and the well-rounded adults they will become. Having the opportunity to affect the lives of this generation of young people has been such a pleasure.

Thank you for allowing me the privilege to teach your children.

As I leave, it is a comfort to know that Mr Coupland shares my vision and values for the school. I know that with Mrs Whitworth at his side, working alongside Mr Tyler, and with your continued support and passion for the school, it will continue to grow in stature and to go on to greater heights.

Thank you all.

With best wishes,

This Week's Highlights

Sunny Sports Day

Our wishes for a sunny Senior Sports Day certainly came true 🌞 It’s always so great to see us all come together as a community in support of one another. A big well done to all our athletes and a huge thank you to all those cheering from the sidelines!

Singing in Senior

The Recital Hall was beautifully decorated this week for our 1940s themed Senior Summer Concert. It was the first concert for some and the last for others, but we're always impressed by the rising musical talent guided by the ever-inspiring Mr Palmer and our Peri Teachers 🎵

Mr Palmer

Sweet Caroline

With the departure to Dubai for one of our beloved staff members, some of our pupils have pulled a poetic performance out of their tiny little hats. Mrs Wilkinson will be sorely missed by staff and students, but we wish her the best of luck.

Science Fair

From the crunchiest crisps to understanding dogs - this week's Year 7 and 8 Science Fair was illuminating!

It's great to see our pupils getting involved in scientific research at such a young age. Good work 👏

Just Keep Swimming...

Our Preparatory pupils have been preparing for swimming in the sea this year and have been awarded the following. Great work!

Gold Squad

The Duke of Edinburgh Gold Squad is back after four days of walking in sunny Derbyshire. With special thanks to Mr Barrett and Mrs Gladwin who make all of this possible!

Mr Barrett and Mrs Gladwin

Lovely Leaves

Year 1 and 2 enjoyed some creativity in the sun this week. They went on a hunt to find a leaf they liked, then brought it to life by adding some eyes and facial features.

They took time to give them a name, introduce them to their friends and even share a little about their personalities. A fun and enlightening afternoon!

Ms Skelton

Wilkin Chapman

Our Business department has been busy running a Law industry project in conjunction with Wilkin Chapman, where they delivered presentations on areas of law that they would like to change.

Additionally, staff and alumni supported Wilkin Chapman and others in the C2C2C this week - a 100-mile bike ride across the county for charity by local businesses. With Mrs Eke in the support van, two alumni made the tough cycle — Louis Sadler, now a legal apprentice and Russell Eke from Cathedral School, now a corporate and commercial solicitor.

Food for the Brain

Year 2 have had a great afternoon at Lincoln Central Library today. They've enjoyed a tour of the children's section and taken part in a detective book hunt. We love supporting our local community spaces.

Sailing for Success

A squad of Red Arrows, several capsized picos and one broken mast - but non-stop laughter at the Sailing Club yesterday.

Looking Furry

Our Preparatory performance of Wind in the Willows is just next week and we can't wait to see some small animals turning into budding actors and actresses. Here's a sneak peek of their costumes...

What Now?

Reception has been reading a book titled 'What Now' that explores all the options for avoiding bath time! Exploring the concept with play, they've created a picnic area, out-of-space experiences and constructed a mighty spaceship!

LMS On Air

Lincoln City Radio hosted Mr Eves and Tess B to talk about the coming adventures in their trip to Peru and world record attempt. Thursday saw us pass the 'ten days to go' mark so excitement is running almost as high as the mountains they'll be hiking.

Mr Eves

Scarborough Squash

We recently took 14 squash players to the Scarborough Squash Academy. Some games were won convincingly, and some had to fight hard, but the end result was in LMS's favour. After the afternoon of squash, they headed to Scarborough beachfront for some amusements and food, and then to the YHA for our evening accommodation.

After a good-cooked breakfast on Sunday morning, we returned to the beach for some fun games, a walk and ice cream.

Many thanks to Carolyn and Mr Hart for offering to spend yet another squash weekend with our school squash family.

Fran Wallis

National Racing College

The Equestrian Club took the opportunity to learn about the different educational courses that are offered at the National Racing College in Doncaster. We toured the facilities, watched the race horses on the gallops and some of the students had a go on the horse simulator they use to train jockeys. A brilliant day had by all!

Ms Hughes-Jones

Year 13 Prom

Our Year 13 students ended a wonderful year in style at this year's Leavers Ball. Each and every one of them has brought laughter, dedication and energy to LMS. We wish, from the bottom of our hearts, the very best for all their future endeavours.

Golfing for Gold

FoLMS organised the annual Golf Day this week in glorious sunshine at Lincoln Golf Club. 27 players fiercely, but politely, contested for the trophy in a Texas scramble team event. Mr Eves brought six students along to play alongside parents and friends, which was great to see, and the team consisting of Mikey, his dad Michael, Bertie and Tom won the day with an amazing score of 17 under par after handicap.

Pete W won the nearest the pin prize and Greig M won the longest drive, and they all celebrated after with a burger and a drink in the sunshine.

Thanks to the generosity of Louis at Lincoln Golf Club for providing the golf free of charge and the very generous contributors to the raffle, FoLMS raised over £900 on the day.

He has worked extensively as a drummer and percussionist for over twenty years, with many distinguished artists such as The Drifters and even for the Royal Shakespeare Company. Contact the school office (Prep and Senior) to know more 🥁

Current Year 9 pupils and above need to secure a place quickly if they’re interested in the upcoming Iceland trip. Over half the places have been taken and they'll be offered to the rest of the Senior School next! Please visit WisePay to confirm with a deposit.

Please find a link below to a leaflet from Sutherland Education Guardianship who provide homestays for students at Senior schools in the UK. The company are always looking for families to support students whilst they study at their chosen school.

We thought this may be of interest to some of our families - and possibly your extended family and friends.

Please note: we have no experience of the company and therefore are not endorsing Sutherlands.

Please get in touch with Sutherlands directly if you are interested in being a host family or have any queries about homestays.
