Albina Head Start and Early Head Start promote school readiness of children ages birth to five from low-income families by supporting the development of the whole child.
All services are provided FREE to families.
Programs
Albina offers two programs:
Early Head Start (EHS)
Serves Prenatal Mom's, children birth to age 3 years old and their families in either our Home Based or our Center Based service models.
Head Start (HS)
Serves children ages 3 to 5 years old and their family in either our Home Based or our Center Based service models.

Quality Full-Day Program
- Center Based: Monday-Friday 7 am- 4:30 pm
- Teen Sites: Monday-Friday 7:30 am-5 pm
Classrooms located in North, North East and South East Portland.
All children are offered, Breakfast, Lunch and an Afternoon Snack that meet each child's specific allergy needs as well as CACFP/USDA nutrition standards.
A diverse curricula that includes:
- Spanish Language in all HS & EHS Classrooms.
- American Sign Language (EHS Classrooms)
- Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (S.T.E..A.M)
- Mandarin language (offered in McCormack-Matthews Head Start Classrooms A, B, C and Early Head Start Classroom #3, Carolyn Young Head Start Classroom #5 and the Head Start Classroom at Hughs)
- Low child to staff ratios
- Diapers & Pull-Ups are provided in the classroom.
- Iron Fortified Infant Formula is provided.
Early Intervention & Early Childhood Special Education
- Support families in completing the ASQ and ASQ:SE yearly.
- Address family concerns and assist in completing referrals for outside services.
- Work closely with Multnomah Early Childhood Program (MECP) to help families complete evaluations, and offer onsite services for children.

- Growth, Vision & Hearing Screenings
- Partnership with University of Portland Nursing Students.
- HS partnership with the Casey Eye Institute.

Classrooms for Teen Parents
- Partnership with Portland Public Schools (PPS)
- Classrooms are available at Franklin, McDaniel, Grant & Roosevelt High Schools.
- Teen Site Center Based Hours 7:30 am-5 pm
- Teen Parents must meet requirements by PPS to qualify.
Classrooms at Portland Community College (PCC)
- 2 EHS and 1 HS Classrooms are available at the PCC Cascades Campus
- Parent must be enrolled at PCC to qualify for the classroom.
Home Based
Assigned a professionally trained Home Visitor
Weekly Home Visits
- 90-minute visit
- Focus is on supporting the Parent-Child Relationship and the Parent's role as their child's first teacher.
- Child development information is individualized to support the child's physical, social emotional and intellectual development.
- Developmental screenings and assessments.
Prenatal Home Visit
- Twice monthly home visits
- Individualized information to meet the pregnant mother's needs.
Early Intervention & Early Childhood Special Education
- Support families in completing the ASQ and ASQ:SE yearly.

Parent education programs
Center Training Assistant Program (CTA)
The Center Training Assistant (CTA) Program is designed to provide Albina parents, who are interested in exploring career opportunities in Early Childhood Education.
The CTA program provides participants the practical experience and training that is necessary to apply for a Teacher’s Assistant position in an Albina Head Start or Early Head Start classroom at the completion of the program.*
*completion of the CTA program does not guarantee employment
PCC Careers pathway program
Partnership with Portland Community College
Prepare for the healthcare field and positions such as a: Patient Relations Rep, Medical Office Assistant, Dietary Aid, Pharmacy Packager or Technician and more!
The Healthcare Careers Pathway includes the Healthcare Careers certificate, and prepares students with the foundational skills required by employers for entry-level positions in the healthcare industry.
In addition, it prepares students to continue their education in healthcare by introducing students to the wide variety of career opportunities available in the healthcare industry.
Albina provides a coach to help support participants and they learn with PCC.
Tuition, Books and Fees are PAID.

Parent Education
Through our partnership with Morrison Family Center, parenting classes are offered FREE through out the school year.
The Incredible Years
The Incredible Years® evidence based parenting programs focus on strengthening parenting competencies and fostering parent involvement in children’s school experiences, to promote children’s academic, social and emotional skills and reduce conduct problems. The parenting programs are grouped according to age: babies (0-12 months), toddlers (1-3 years), preschoolers (3-6 years).

Albina provides services to families currently living in the Portland Public School District within the North, North East (not past NE 110th) and South East (not past SE 110th) areas of Portland.. Exceptions for families who have been displaced.
