What is the coolest thing about what you do?
Since I work in R&D, our projects are mission critical and innovative, solving unknown questions throughout multiple domains. This is cool because I work on a variety of tasking, while learning about the newest innovations in tech. I have supported efforts in cybersecurity research, binary analysis, and software development. I currently develop code to support a prototype autonomous aircraft. This work will provide test pilots with more representative targets, enabling more effective training and supporting advanced technology development.
What's been your favorite moment at your job?
I developed a simulation environment intended to test algorithms and system logic in the absence of hardware. The simulations allowed our program to successfully integrate our software on the first try, contributing to the overall program success. This was my favorite moment because the program later won the President’s Award of Excellence, the largest award across our sector of 20K employees.
How did UMBC prepare you for life after college?
I struggled with performance pressure and anxiety while competing at UMBC. Overcoming these mental obstacles prepared me for work and grad school. Through running, I improved my mental fortitude, resilience, and ability to juggle academic and professional obligations. UMBC prepared me for work and grad school through strong foundational courses in data structures, algorithms, and operating systems. It was beneficial to receive my undergraduate coursework in an environment with smaller class rosters and more personal instruction from esteemed faculty.
What's your favorite UMBC memory?
My favorite UMBC memory was hosting the conference meet during my sophomore year. This was the first time UMBC hosted the America East conference meet in 10 years, so it was exciting for our team. At that meet, I won the 800m, setting an America East record, and was a member of the first-place 4x800m relay team. My performance in the 800m qualified me for the NCAA Regional Track & Field Championships, where I advanced to the quarterfinal and set my personal record.
What do you miss most about UMBC?
I miss the structure and sense of identity UMBC provided. When I was a student athlete at UMBC, there was a structured community with a shared purpose. Post-graduation, I experienced a period of readjustment in defining my personal identity. I am grateful for the experiences, friendship, and camaraderie I gained as a team member.
