Quay Academy Newsletter September 2025

Message from Caroline Broadhead, Principal

It has been a pleasure to welcome everyone back to Quay Academy after the summer holidays. The children have made a fantastic start to the new school year—settling back into routines quickly and showing such enthusiasm for their learning.

A very special welcome goes to our new EYFS starters, who have already impressed us with their confidence and how quickly they are settling in. We are delighted to have them as part of our school.

It has also been lovely to see how smart all of the children look in their uniforms; they are a real credit to you and to our school community.

We are all very much looking forward to the exciting year ahead, full of opportunities, achievements and new experiences for every child. Thank you for your continued support in making Quay Academy a fantastic place to learn.

YOU SAID, WE DID

After listening to your views, we have decided that MCAS messages will be the primary communication system from school to parents. Please sign up to this app if you haven’t already.

Class Dojo allows you to see the positive points the children receive day to day. On occasions, class teachers may post a class story to show learning in the school. Class Dojo cannot be used for communication purposes between parents and class teachers.

Each week we will send out a weekly bulletin to inform you of upcoming events. You can also email us at office@quayacademy.co.uk or call us on 01262673219

Our learning this term

Below you will find details of some of the topics that each year group will be studying this term. Alongside this, the children will continue to use the Jigsaw programme for PSHE and RE, supporting their personal development and understanding of the wider world.

Year 1

This term, our learning journey will be full of exciting topics across the curriculum!

Science & Astronomy: We will be exploring seasons and weather, developing our understanding of how the world around us changes throughout the year.

Talk for Reading: Children will enjoy a range of classic stories including The Tiger Who Came to Tea, Hairy Maclary, The Paper Dolls, and The Way Back Home.

Writing: We will be creating cumulative tales and writing our own versions of the traditional story The Three Billy Goats Gruff.

Mathematics: Our focus will be on place value, calculation, and geometry, building strong foundations for problem-solving.

PE: This term’s focus will be gymnastics, developing coordination, balance, and control.

Geography & History: We will be learning all about our school and our local town, developing a sense of community and belonging.

Year 2

We are very excited about the learning adventures ahead this term. Here is an overview of what Year 2 will be exploring:

Maths: We will be building on our understanding of place value, learning to recognise the value of each digit in two-digit numbers. The children will also develop strategies for addition and subtraction, solving problems in different ways and beginning to explain their reasoning.

Reading: Our class texts will be The Book of Trees and The Hodgeheg. Through these stories, we will practise key reading skills such as predicting, making inferences, and discussing vocabulary, while also enjoying rich discussions about themes and characters.

Writing: We will be writing our own journey tales, focusing on structure, descriptive language, and creating engaging characters. Later in the term, the children will explore information texts, learning how to write clearly, use factual detail, and organise ideas with headings and subheadings.

Science: Our topic is plants and animals. The children will investigate how plants grow, what they need to survive, and the differences between living things. We will also explore habitats and how animals are suited to the environments they live in.

Geography: We will be looking at weather and seasons, considering how climates vary across the world. In addition, we will compare and contrast North and South America, exploring their diverse landscapes, cultures, and environments.

History: This term, our focus is rebellion and significant others. The children will learn about key figures and events from the past who stood up for change, considering the impact they had on the world.

Year 3 & 4

We are looking forward to an exciting and busy term, with lots of opportunities for discovery, creativity, and skill-building. Here is what the children will be learning across the curriculum:

Reading: We will be exploring a range of texts, including The Only Way is Badger, Rosa Parks, and The Iron Man. Through these books, children will develop their reading fluency and comprehension skills, learning to make predictions, retrieve information, and discuss themes such as friendship, fairness, and resilience.

Writing:Our writing focus will be on warning tales, where children will learn how to build suspense and develop imaginative storylines, and recount texts, where they will practise writing clearly and accurately about real and imagined events.

Maths: This term we will consolidate our understanding of place value before moving on to written and mental methods for addition and subtraction. We will also develop strategies for multiplication and division, with a focus on times tables, and apply these skills to problem-solving.

Science: Our topic is forces and magnets. The children will investigate how forces affect movement, explore magnetic attraction and repulsion, and carry out practical experiments to deepen their scientific understanding.

Geography: We will study the United Kingdom, learning about its countries, cities, and regions, and also explore the importance of rivers, discovering how they shape landscapes and support communities.

History: This term’s focus is on the Cradles of Civilisation and the Shang Dynasty. The children will learn about some of the earliest known civilisations, their achievements, and the legacy they left behind.

PE: Our PE lessons will focus on netball and basketball, where children will develop teamwork, communication, and ball-handling skills.

Music: In music, the children will be learning to perform and appreciate the song “Can’t Stop the Feeling”, using it as a springboard for rhythm, pitch, and performance work.

We are excited to see how the children will engage with these topics and develop their knowledge and skills throughout the term!

Year 5

This term, Year 5 will be exploring a rich variety of texts, including Into the Forest, Hansel and Gretel, and The Boy at the Back of the Class. These texts will help pupils develop key reading skills such as inference, prediction, and comparison, while also broadening their understanding of different genres and themes.

In writing, pupils will focus on creating journey tales, using imaginative settings and characters to build atmosphere and excitement. They will also be learning how to write discussion texts, presenting balanced arguments and supporting their ideas with evidence.

In maths, children will be building on their knowledge of place value, as well as developing their skills in the four operations: addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Problem-solving and reasoning will be woven throughout to deepen their mathematical understanding.

Our science units will cover the human body, with a focus on how different systems work together to keep us healthy. We will also investigate rocks and soils, learning how different types are formed and their uses in everyday life.

In history, pupils will study early civilisations in the Americas, exploring cultures such as the Maya and Aztec, their achievements, and their lasting impact on the world today.

Geography lessons will take us to the tropical rainforests, where pupils will learn about their unique ecosystems, importance to the planet, and the threats they face. We will also examine fair trade, considering how our everyday choices can affect communities around the world

This term’s focus will be African beats, where children will explore rhythm, percussion, and call-and-response patterns, building confidence in both performance and composition.

In PE, Year 5 will be developing teamwork, coordination, and strategy through netball and basketball, with a focus on passing, movement, and gameplay.

Year 6

This term, Year 6 will be studying Clockwork. Through this text, pupils will develop their comprehension skills by exploring themes of fate, morality, and invention, while also strengthening their ability to analyse character motivations and authorial techniques.

In writing, pupils will focus on producing information texts, learning how to present facts clearly, concisely, and in an engaging way for their audience. They will also write a meeting tale, building tension and atmosphere through character interaction and dialogue.

In maths, children will deepen their understanding of place value and consolidate their skills in addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. They will apply these operations to increasingly complex problems and develop strategies for accuracy and efficiency.

Our science topic will explore chemistry and the states of matter. Pupils will investigate the properties of solids, liquids, and gases, as well as changes of state, reversible and irreversible changes, and the particle model.

In history, Year 6 will study World War II, exploring the key events of the conflict, the experiences of those who lived through it, and the lasting impact it has had on the modern world. To deepen their understanding, pupils will also take part in a visit to Eden Camp, where they will experience history brought to life through immersive exhibitions and artefacts.
