LYDON CONTRACTING LTD LATEST NEWS FROM YOUR UTILITIES & CIVIL ENGINEERING EXPERTS

Welcome to the September 2025 newsletter from Lydon Contracting Ltd. We're proud of the work we do and want to share our latest news, useful information and staff updates.

Underground, overground

Works are progressing well at our site in Potters Bar, this month the removal of the top halves and backfill of the decommissioned fuel tanks were completed, allowing us to form the shuttering and steelwork for the base slab.

Once this was completed the concrete base was poured and allowed to cure. After curing sufficiently, the formwork and steelwork was erected as per the detailed drawings for the HV TX and LV-DB combined bases ready for the concrete pour that was completed successfully with the aid of a 24m concrete boom pump.Whilst our formwork teams were tackling the above, works continuned in other areas of of the site with the installation of new bollards and Armco barriers to give protection for the new EV chargers that are due to be installed.

Top cutting!

Some of our specialist plant has been kept busy this month on our 33kV cable route in Northampton. Our Topcutter machine has been leading the way, cutting through the tarmac road and in some areas the underlying concrete. The operator is in constant communication with his banksman via radio headsets as the trench is cut.

After the material along the route has been cleared by an excavator, our Vacuum Excavator is then used to safely expose any existing services within the trench. Works are progressing well, and the route should be completed within the next month.

On the road

Back in October 2022 we commenced works in Wiltshire on the installation of 2no. 11kV circuits for a new commercial development.

After various phases of works since its commencement, the final phases of the project are about to get underway which includes the directional drilling (HDD) under the M4 motorway near junction 17 scheduled for early October.

Prior to the drilling commencing, a ground investigation report has been undertaken to enable the design of the drill. Vegetation clearance has taken place on both the East and Westbound carriageways to establish a clear corridor of vision to establish survey points.

A grid of survey points for the motorway carriageway surface has been set up and will be monitored for a period of seven days prior to drilling. This will set out baseline measurements which will set movement trigger values for when the drilling takes place. Monitoring will also take place during and post construction to ensure any movement to the carriageway is captured.

The path ahead

We recently completed a new tarmac footpath around part of the perimeter of a site for a regular client in Wellingborough.

We were asked to replace an existing gravel walkway around the boundary of the site as the existing surface was difficult to walk along. The existing pea gravel was dug out of the footpath and the existing concrete edgings were reinstalled in new concrete bedding.

We also installed new concrete edgings along the fence line before laying the new tarmac surface to provide a smooth, safe walkway around the site which is a vast improvement over the previous path.

London calling

During September we have carried out some finishing touches to one of our London bus depot electrification schemes. In addition to the HV and LV infrastructure required we have carried out various additional works including Armco barrier installation to provide safe walkways, new v-mesh fencing around the new HV transformer compound and two access steps allowing safe access to the embankment for maintenance.

Connecting power

Installing cable, both low voltage (LV) and high voltage (HV) is one of Lydon Contracting’s specialist areas. We have dedicated teams trained in the process and outlined by the National Electricity Registration Scheme (NERS) who operate on behalf of the UK Distribution Network Operators (DNOs).

This month we installed 11kV and 33kV cables to a new primary substation being built for a new housing development at Eastern Green, Coventry.

Accreditation!

Constructionline Gold, Social Value & Builders Profile Certification.

It’s been another busy month at Lydon Contracting, renewing accreditations and once again achieving our Constructionline Gold, Builders Profile and Social Value Certification.

The Constructionline platform allows buyers to simplify and speed up their search for a# validated Contractor, improving resource and cost efficiency. We are assessed on areas such as Corporate Social Responsibilities, Environmental Management, Quality Management, Equality, and Diversity. It ensures contractors abide by legislation in areas such as modern slavery, anti-bribery and corruption and demonstrates you have been assessed and adhere to these standards to potential buyers.

With recertification gained for these we are now concentrating our efforts on our annual ISO 9001 audit next month and also gaining ISO 45001.

On the fairway

Earlier this month, we hosted our inaugural LCL Golf Day at the stunning Wychwood Golf Club in the heart of the Cotswolds — and what a day it was!

Under glorious September sunshine, members of the LCL team were joined by valued clients and key suppliers for a day of friendly competition, great conversation, and shared laughs. The format was a Texas Scramble, keeping the pace lively and the team spirit high, with prizes awarded for the best overall score.

A huge thank you to our sponsors for adding an extra layer of excitement:

  • Nearest the Pin: Hevey Building Supplies, GRS Stone, and Ridgway Rentals
  • Longest Drive: Plastech Southern

We’re incredibly grateful to everyone who attended and helped make the day such a memorable success. Plans for next year are already underway - and we can’t wait to tee off again!

40 years young!

This month, we celebrated a special milestone with our Commercial Director who turned 40! Dan has been a valued member of the team since joining in April 2019, bringing energy, insight, and a steady hand to all things commercial. We marked the occasion with some fun (and delicious) cakes in the office.
