7 JUNE 2025
We were bracing ourselves for a BIG day as we planned to briefly leave the traditional Camino route and join the GR121 coastal path (rather than going inland on country roads). This change add a significant amount of elevation gain to an already big day in both distance and elevation.
We all felt good and knocked the first 5km relatively easily whilst taking in the views that the spectacular elevated coastal road/path provides that runs between Zarautz and the next coastal town of Getaria. Being the weekend, plenty of locals were out walking, jogging or cycling and enjoying the warm temperatures.
This stretch is just the warm up before the real action begins! We stopped for lunch just before the turn off to the GR121 coastal route. Again, many locals were out on day walks with this coastal section being very popular.
Our coastal route was a winner and the additional elevation added to our day of walking was well rewarded with spectacular views making this day our best so far. Whilst being a big day, with the added pleasure of the coastal views and by now building up our walking fitness we all coped remarkably well for such a big walking day.
