LYDON CONTRACTING LTD LATEST NEWS FROM YOUR UTILITIES & CIVIL ENGINEERING EXPERTS

Welcome to the October 2024 newsletter from Lydon Contracting Ltd. We're proud of the work we do and want to share our latest news, useful information and staff updates.

Pulling power

During October phase 1 of the Stansted North 7.5 km 33kV and pilot cable installation commenced using our drum trailers for part of the install and our Beavertail lorry fitted out with a special A Frame for the remainder.

Over 1.5km of dual circuit 33kV cables and pilot cables have been installed, jointed, tested and reinstated.

Phase 2 will start next week and run into November.

Going overground

October saw the installation of the ducting for 2no. HV circuits across the Network Rail bridge on Wellhead Lane, Birmingham. These works were closely supervised by Network Rail engineers and were fully signed off on completion of the install.

This section now completes the ducting installation enabling the installation of the 2No HV circuits to provide a new HV supply to the National Express bus depot for their new EV chargers.

Primary Substations

Stanton Cross, Wellingborough

October saw our primary substation build at Stanton Cross in Wellingborough. Over the coming weeks the client will be installing the switchgear and transformers in preparation for the installation of the off-site 33kV services.

Graven Hill, Bicester

Work has commenced on a new primary substation build at Graven Hill in Bicester.

The substation consists of a switch room building with 33kV DNO and 11kV private switch room and two separate transformer bunds.

Works to date have included excavation to reduced dig level, oversite blinding, casting of the switch room base slab and erection of shuttering for the switch room walls. Works are due to be completed in Spring 2025.

Safety first

During October we installed the final concrete bases and safety bollards at the Nottingham City Transport bus depot. All works were carefully coordinated to ensure no operational impact on the busy depot environment with access having to be maintained for over 100 no buses at any one time.

Lighting the way

With the day light hours shortening, we have been working tirelessly at the University of Nottingham Campus to install a new LV ducting network to replace the faulty footpath lighting bollards and install new street lighting columns in readiness for the new LV cable network due to be installed.

Investing in quality equipment

During October we took delivery of a brand new 3t Wacker Neuson DW30 dumper, another quality piece of plant added to the Lydon fleet that will ensure our operators are kept out of the wet weather whilst works continue over the winter. This was put straight to work on a new project just starting in London.

October also saw the delivery of our new DAF CF480 Beavertail lorry, fitted with a Palfinger PK33002-EH Crane. The new lorry comes fully equipped with all cameras and sensors to cover the new London DVS requirements, Alloy wheels, A heavy duty recovery winch, Chain Boxes, Galvanised mesh panels and chequer plate to protect the lorry bed and prevent slipping of plant while loading / unloading.

We have also had fold out wide load marker boards and lights fitted, allowing us to carry out a huge range of plant and equipment moves.

The High-level light bar, along with the Lydon livery really sets it off.

Tell us about yourself, what do you like doing in your spare time?

When not working, I enjoy spending time with my children and family. I travel as much as possible between visiting family in the USA, city breaks and snowboarding in the winter. I am an avid Formula One fan and have a son who is on the Red Bull junior karting programme (fingers crossed he makes it all the way to F1!!)
