Spring Term Clubs 2025

What happened in School this week?

Forest Explorers

Nursery have been enjoying the story ‘We’re Going on a Bear Hunt’ By Michael Rosen and Helen Oxenbury. The children have been building Bear caves, making Bear masks, making Bear banana muffins, building Bear dens with the large bricks and we even impressed our teachers with our Bear Hunt cosmic yoga.

Reception

The children in Reception have been really excited to be back together after the Christmas holiday. They have shown photographs and talked about their Christmas and New Year celebrations. This term we are learning about how New Year is celebrated around the world and how it is often a time to look back at what has happened during the year and look forward to the coming year. Each of the children thought about something they would like to get better at this year as their New Year resolution.

Year 1

Year 1 have enjoyed coming back to school and exploring the changing environment! We wrapped up very warm this week and went to see what signs of winter we could find in the forest. We noticed that the trees looked very bare, that there were less signs of animal activity and that much of it remained completely frozen. Thank goodness for warm gloves and hats! We have enjoyed starting our new topic on London, with the children sharing lots about their experiences in the capital.

Year 2

It's been lovely to welcome Year 2 back and hear all about the exciting things that happened over the Christmas holidays! We have started to look at our new topics for this half term, London in English, symmetry and recapping shapes in Maths, and Scientists and Inventors in Science. In Science the children have been learning about greenhouses and how they help plants to grow, even when the weather is cold and dreary! We discussed how plants need water, sunlight, air, and the right temperature to grow. Each child has planted their own bean seed in a small pot and placed a clear plastic cup over the top to replicate a greenhouse, with Mrs Cresswell and Miss Wilson leaving their beans without a greenhouse. Over the next few weeks, we will observe the beans as they sprout and grow, making detailed observations and recording the height of our beans. We are excited to see how each bean plant grows and are hopeful that we may get some beans at the end of our experiment!

Year 3

We have started to prepare for our class assembly on the Romans. To continue this theme, in art we covered Roman vases with wax crayon, then painted over with black paint. Once dried we are going to scratch Roman designs onto the vases revealing the wax underneath. Everyone enjoyed researching and designing authentic patterns and they will be on display in the Prep Hall for all to see at our assembly.

Year 4

The first three days have flown by and now the holidays seem like a distant memory! This has been a week of new topics: in English we have begun our new text called ‘Winter’s Child’ by Angela McAllister. We have been amazed by the illustrations and wrote about our predictions for Tom, Nana and the mysteriously pale boy who has arrived in the story. In science we have started looking at ‘Living Things’ and in humanities we are very excited to study the Romans. Alongside this we are getting ready for our netball match next week, singing with Mrs Rivett and preparing for our upcoming assembly (please note: it is 5th February). So much more to come!

Year 5

To conclude our first few days back, Year 5 have been lucky enough to take part in a Mask Workshop with 'Strangeface Masks'. Studying, discussing and using these extraordinary masks has allowed the children to explore characterisation, physicality, props and counter character. The class have thought about emotions and stories to aid devising their own pieces of mask theatre.

Year 6

Year 6 has had an great start to 2025! They were introduced to the new topic of Rivers and began exploring the water cycle. The students worked hard in their revision lessons for maths and science, applying their knowledge well in the end-of-unit assessments. They also enjoyed some frosty fun outside, going on a scavenger hunt to find natural items for each letter of the alphabet. A quick reminder to bring outdoor learning clothes on Fridays, including walking boots or wellies, to ensure everyone stays warm and dry during our outdoor activities.
