Canbury School Newsletter 17th January 2025. ISSUE 355

Dear Families, Friends, Students and Staff.

This week has been a busy one! I attended the ISA Heads Conference, where we explored crucial topics like cultivating emotionally intelligent schools and understanding the complexities of child brain development. It was a valuable opportunity to network with other Heads from across the country and share best practices.

Back at school, our staff have been learning about the importance of movement breaks from our Occupational Therapists, and we're excited to incorporate many new and engaging activities into our daily routines. Finally, huge congratulations to our Year 10 and 11 Functional Skills students, who began their exams this week. They have shown incredible dedication and resilience.

Enjoy the weekend.

Wellbeing at Canbury

The Year 8 students have been working hard on creating Growth and Fix Mindset cards in their Wellbeing lessons this week. Their thoughtful reflections on each mindset showcase their developing understanding of how these mindsets can impact their learning journey. They've explored concepts like embracing challenges, learning from mistakes, and persevering through setbacks, demonstrating a deeper understanding of the importance of a growth mindset.

A selection of student cards from the lesson. We are so impressed with their ideas!

Academic News

Business and Enterprise Day

On Tuesday 28th January we have a very exciting off timetable day for years 7-10, sixth form (and year 11 Business students). It is a business and enterprise event where the students will be in teams, creating, purchasing and selling a product to outside visitors from Legal and General. The students will attend lessons 1 and 2 as normal and then the event begins - look out for photos and more next week - I’m told there are a number of prizes and certificates that will be awarded at the end of the day. Please note that if your child usually has appointments on a Tuesday e.g. SALT, these will still run and students can simply attend these and then go back to their teams.

Upcoming Public Exams

Even though it is only January, this week I have created a copy of the exam schedule for this Summer! Please find this document here. For those in Year 11 or 13 you will want to pay particular attention to these dates, but it is likely useful for all our parents to know when the exam season starts and ends for Canbury. There will be more detailed information sent to those in Year 11 and 13 in the coming weeks and individualised exam timetables, but for now, this will provide the basic information.

College Open Days

Please note that Kingston college has a series of open days this academic year, and we would recommend that anyone considering a college placement have a look and see what they have to offer - Ms Ridley and I were very impressed last year with their amazing art facilities and the vast number of creative courses on offer at the college, as well as a wide range of academic and practical courses.

Open days for their main Kingston campus are 25th January, 12th March and 20th June. The open day for the creative college site is in the Autumn term.

Fun in Science

It’s been a week of forces! We have had a brilliant start to the term in science, with Year 7’s learning all about the interaction of forces and investigating the effects of friction, as well as observing the nature of unbalanced and balanced forces. Year 8's have been busy building circuits. Year 9’s have had fun looking at state changes, investigating melting and boiling points of stearic acid. Whilst Year 10 have been counting bubbles in studying photosynthesis. Lastly, Year 11 have focused their attention towards investigating the effect of forces on acceleration using air tracks and data loggers.

Phew, what a busy department!

Fulham Stadium Tour

This morning, all the school’s football teams were lucky enough to go on a tour of West London’s best football team’s stadium (well, according to Mrs Knivett and Marley). This was due to the school’s participation in the Inclusive Schools League, which is organised by the Fulham Foundation.

Canbury's aspiring footballers at Fulham Stadium.

Students were taken on a tour of the Johnny Haynes Stand (which is a Grade 2 listed building), the press box, the Inner Cottage forecourt, away changing room, home changing room, players’ tunnel, and the trophy cabinet.

The students had a fantastic time and the club may have even picked up a few additional supports along the way!

Student Corner

We're excited to introduce a new student-created feature to our newsletter! This week, enjoy a joke from Soren in Year 7.

What did the rock star name his two daughters?
