The Center for Innovative and Transformative Instruction (CITI) at Winston-Salem State University offers a selection of instructional workshops that focus on best practices in pedagogical approaches, integration of innovative teaching practices, and updates and resources on trends in university teaching and learning.

August 2025

Introduction to Canvas- Wednesday, August 27, 2025, 2 pm-3pm Dr. Michele Leverett

Participants will be able to navigate the Canvas Learning Management System (LMS), create and organize course content into modules, manage communication with students, and utilize assessment tools such as assignments, quizzes, and the gradebook to support student engagement

Canvas Basics- Thursday, August 28, 2025, 2-3pm, Dr. Michele Leverett

Participants will be able to log into Canvas, navigate the dashboard and course interface, upload files, create basic content (such as pages, assignments, create modules. and announcements), and understand how to communicate with students using Canvas tools.

From ACUE to Breakthrough: Student Success Stories- Thursday, September 4, 2025, Dr. Jeremiah Shipp facilitates a panel of WSSU Faculty; Dr. Cassandra Wineglass (Healthcare Management)Dr. Tennille Presley (Chemistry)

During this interactive panel discussion, faculty will share evidence-based teaching practices that impact student success in their face-to-face and/or online courses.

Design with the End in Mind: Creating Clear, Measurable Learning Outcomes- Wednesday, September 9, 2025- Dr. Michele Leverett

Without well-crafted outcomes, alignment across activities, assessments, and student success is difficult to achieve—and even harder to evaluate. This interactive workshop introduces faculty to the Backward Design model, a proven, learner-centered framework that begins with the end in mind. Participants will learn how to craft observable and measurable learning outcomes at the course, module/unit, and assignment levels that align with both program goals and assessment models.

Empowered Pedagogy: Instructional Resource Support- Thursday, September 18, 2025; 3:30-4:30pm- CITI Team (NEW FACULTY SYMPOSIUM only)

New Faculty Symposium is open to all new faculty (adjuncts included).

Participants will explore campus resources to support instructional excellence, including the Online Course Review process, Amplifying Student Voice with a Midterm Assessment Plan (MAP), and applying the Transparency in Learning and Teaching (TILT) framework.

Impactful Graphics for the Classroom with Adobe Express- Thursday, September 25, 2025- 2-3pm- Ms. Zaire McPhearson

This session focuses on using Adobe Express to create engaging, visually clear classroom materials. Participants will learn to design assignment sheets, objective posters, and announcements that support comprehension and accessibility.

Let’s Prepare for Midterms: Revamping old test with the use of AI.- Monday, September 29, 2025- 2-3pm- Mr. Darien Robinson and Ms. Zaire McPhearson

During this interactive panel, faculty will be shown how AI can be utilized to revamp their current midterm assessments. Whether the midterm is a standardized test or a form of presentation, we will discuss how AI can be utilized to create a dynamic assessment tool that can cover multiple areas on knowledge.

Running on Empty: Recharging Faculty Energy in Higher Ed-Wednesday, October 15, 2025-2-3pm- Dr. Michele Leverett, Mr. Darien Robinson, and Ms. Zaire McPhearson

Faculty fatigue has become a persistent and growing challenge in higher education, fueled by increased workloads, blurred work-life boundaries, shifting student needs, and institutional pressures. This virtual workshop offers a practical and reflective space for faculty to explore the roots of their fatigue and discover realistic, evidence-based strategies for renewal and resilience.

Teaching and Learning with AI- Wednesday, October 22, 2025- Dr. Jeremiah E. Shipp, Dr. Bao Maddux (Mathematics) Dr. James Blackwell (History), Dr. Yolanda Edwards (Rehabilitation Counseling)

During this interactive panel discussion, the faculty who completed ACUE’s Teaching with AI quick-study course will share how they are utilizing artificial intelligence to enhance teaching and learning in their courses.

Digital Storytelling with Adobe Express-Thursday, October 30, 2025- 2-3pm; Ms. Zaire McPhearson

This workshop explores how faculty can use storytelling through video to create more humanized, engaging classroom content. From “why I teach” videos to assignment prompts, instructors will learn simple ways to connect with students.

Follow the Rubric- Monday, November 3, 2025

Just like a syllabus, a rubric is essential to student success. In this interactive panel, we will be discussing how tools such as Magic School AI can help faculty create rubrics that effectively detail how students will be assessed on their assignments.

Participants will have their individual Canvas needs addressed by receiving one-on-one support to troubleshoot issues, apply new features, or enhance existing course content, leaving with actionable progress toward building or improving their Canvas course.

February 2026

Leveraging LinkedIn Learning for Student Success- Wednesday, February 4, 2026; 2-3pm; Dr. Jeremiah E. Shipp; Alyssa Rowe, Senior Customer Success Manager (LinkedIn Learning)

During this workshop, faculty will explore how to incorporate LinkedIn Learning into their courses to prepare students for employment opportunities and design skills-based learning experiences.

Collaborative Feedback Loops with FigJam + Adobe Express- Wednesday February 18, 2026; 12-1pm; Zaire McPhearson and Darien Robinson

This workshop introduces faculty to using FigJam and Adobe Express as digital spaces for collecting student assignments, facilitating peer feedback, and creating reflective visuals. Faculty will learn how to set up shared boards where students can upload work, annotate peer projects, and provide formative feedback—all while reinforcing visual communication and classroom transparency.

3,2,1 Got it!-Monday, February 23, 2026-2-3pm; Mr. Darien Robinson-

This workshop is designed to introduce faculty to the 3, 2, 1 method of student comprehension and learning. We will discuss the pros and cons of using this method as well as what digital tools can be used to assist with the tracking of student response and understanding of the material. You may find that students understood the material better when there was an activity vs. when a lecture was given.

Schedule for AI Faculty Development Workshops

These workshops are facilitated by guest subject matter experts in the field of generative AI for university instruction and integration. Days of workshops vary, but the time is 12:00-1:00pm on all days. Some workshops may include faculty presenters from WSSU or guest facilitators from generative AI vendors. This series is funded by a grant from the Adobe Foundation.
