Pew Research (2023) finds that 67% of teens report getting important information from social media as opposed to emails from their schools. While YouTube tops the online location for teen entertainment (used by 95%), Instagram is where students connect with school academic, athletic and social activities. EHS Media began focussing on social media in 2015, using Facebook as the primary conduit from the media students to the school community. We found a few years later, that use had dropped off among teens and that Instagram was gaining popularity. EHS_pirates_media launched in September 2019.

Since that time, the media students have found a deep appreciation for the power of social media in shaping narratives and building communities. Students benefit vastly from seeing newsrooms, workflow, and projects created for the student and community population. Each year, the staff updates online policies and goals to stay current.

Students in journalism monitor posts and reach for content once a month. This is done through Instagram analytics.

Enhanced Engagement: Students increase engagement by including content from all aspects of the school environment. We utilize polls, videos and breaking news content to keep a high level of participation.

Journalism students work with all clubs and activities to keep student up to date on contests and results.

Capturing activities like the bi-annual blood drive keeps the community updated on what is happening inside the high school.

The high school and middle school combined efforts to raise more than $10,000 to help a Make-A-Wish child get his dream trip. These activities are posted real-time for the community.

Many activities and sports at EHS have their own Instagram accounts, however, the EHS Media account has greater reach and can get the word out faster about events and activities. Adding followers in a consistent manner gives the media group power to engage the student body.
