Looking All Grown Up Nursery, summer term, week 11

I was reflecting this week on how far we have come this year. The children seem so much more grown up than when they first arrived in September.

They've been so proud of themselves this week for trying 'reception work' in maths. In literacy, they see that the 'little squiggles' in books are letters that come together to make words, which tell stories. Many of the children can say the sounds for the letters they see all around them. It's amazing!

Appreciating books in the school library.

Our maths target has been to match the correct amount of an item to the number. Many children were ready to move from this concrete understanding to a pictorial form, drawing how many items a number means.

Counting the cheerios to match to the correct number.
Using a finger to point and count.
Checking amounts carefully.
Mark making to show quantity.
A beautifully neat example.
The children were so proud they wanted to continue their work during play.

Our maths focus last week on pattern has morphed into an art focus this week. The children studied the naturally occurring animal fur patterns and had a go at recreating these with oil pastels.

Black, white, black, white...
Adding a touch more colour to a zebra print (why not?!)
A stunning pattern piece.
An inspired 'rainbow pattern'.
Fun learning and playing together.

Finally, just a few photos of the children during play this week...

Don't forget, on Tuesday next week it is our beach trip. Non uniform is recommended, wear weather suitable clothes. Packed lunch is provided for those that normally order a school dinner. Children can bring buckets and spades but don't send anything special as these often get lost or left behind! We have spares in school. We leave at 9:15 sharp and return at 2:45pm for a 3pm pick-up.

On Wednesday we have our pirate themed day. Children are allowed to wear fancy dress (anything goes but no scary masks please). We have loads of spares in school for the children to borrow. We will be using face paint so if you do not want your child to have this please let us know. The afternoon is sports day up at the pavilion, start time to be confirmed but you are welcome to come and watch.

Any questions, please ask.
