SWORD

March-April 2024

Wood and stain

6 x 29.25 x 1 in.

This Sword was based off Shan Yu's sword from Mulan. His sword is a jagged jian with a ring pommel and a long grip. I made Sword when I was in woodshop, using primarily the band saw and a sander. I then added stain to make it more appealing, but also to add shading so it has more depth. This piece isn't finished yet, as I still have to find a jewel to put into the pommel.

THE GRIN

October 2024

Pumpkin

10 x 6.5 in

My goal when creating The Grin was to practice depth and shadows. I used a potato peeler for most of this piece, as using a knife would lead me to stabbing right through it. I find pumpkins are a good way to practice carving due to them being compostable, so you aren't really wasting material.

PEELING

February 2024

Black clay, terra cotta, clear glaze, and gold paint

8 x 6 x 11.25 in

This was an assignment for my ceramics class where we had to make a combination vessel. I used a coil technique for the terra cotta, and a slab for the outer peel. I didn't take into account the different shrink rate of each type of clay, so the black clay cracked, which can be seen in the lower picture. Due to this I decided to mimic the Japanese way of repairing ceramics, kintsugi, but I used gold paint instead of gold leaf. I also added little structures throughout the vase that are based off cliff dwellings my mom and I saw in Colorado.

TURTLE

January 2024

White stoneware clay and glaze

3.25 x 3.75 x .75 in

This work was for my ceramics class where we had to mimic a toy animal. Like everyone else in the class, it was my first time making a semi-realistic sculpture. We all had to choose a toy animal that my teacher brough in and sculpt the figure based off that. I choose a turtle, as there are a lot of small details throughout. Picking the turtle also allowed me to experiment with glaze and the mixing of them.

VASE

October 2022

Paper mâché, white paint, cardboard, and blue colored pencil

7 x 6 x 11 in

I made this vase for my school's performance of 'Noises Off." Instead of using a real vase, we had to use a fake one because someone had to get hit in the head with it during the performance. My director wanted it to mimic porcelain. I was only had a couple hours to add the details, so they aren't as intricate as I had wanted them.

LAUREL

June 2024

Brass and solder

8.5 x 9 x 1.25 in

I made this laurel head wreath in the jewelry and metals class at my school in my free time. I love Ancient Greece ad had recently gone to the Toledo Art Institute where I saw some extremely delicate laurels from Ancient Greece. My Laurel isn't as detailed as the one at the museum due to the fact that I had just learned to solder, and I had a few days to make Laurel before all our materials had to be packed up for the end of the year. I left solder visible and the brass unpolished to give it a bit of an industrial/ worn look.

GREEK TEA SET

November 2023- March 2024

Black clay, white stoneware, and glaze

Dimensions unknown

This tea set was creased for my AP Studio class where each element was based on a different Olympian and/or their significant other. The teapot is Athena. There are five tea cups and saucers, each paired with their significant other, besides Apollo and Artemis with them being twins they share the saucer and teacup. The pairs are Hades and Persephone, Zeus and Hera, Ares and Aphrodite, Poseidon and Amphitrite. The cream pitcher is Dionysus as he is the god of wine. The sugar bowl is Hermes due to sugar cubes reminding me of packages and Hermes being the messenger god. The slop basin is Demeter due to her being the goddess of the grain and disposing of the tea leaves for compost. Hephaestus is the tea canister as he is always making things for the other gods,so he is holding the essential part needed for tea. Finally the spirit lamp is Hestia, the goddess of the hearth, as she is what keeps everything warm.
