A Message From Miss Quarmby

Hello everyone! I hope you’re all well, and thank you so much to everyone who joined us for Parents’ Evening this week. There were lots of smiling faces leaving school, and teachers were absolutely delighted to share your child’s fantastic progress and effort. It was a really positive couple of evenings. We are also immensely proud of Miss Dougan and our debating team, who have made it to the grand final of the Leeds Debating Competition at the Civic Hall! They’ll be going head‑to‑head with Brontë House – the top independent school in Yorkshire – so please keep your fingers crossed for them as they practise and prepare. Speaking of amazing achievements, a huge congratulations to Rachael Spencer (Y4) and Lydia Graham (Y6) who travelled to the West End to perform in Across the Line. We are unbelievably proud of them and can’t wait to see what their next adventures will be. Autographs at the ready! I also sent a letter this week regarding next year’s training days and the Easter holidays. I hope the early notice helps everyone with planning ahead. And finally… Diamond and Platinum postcards are in the post… who will it be this half term? Have a wonderful weekend, and I’ll see you all next week!

Attendance

This week, finishing in first place with 100% are 1LR. In second place are 1VM, with 98.6% and in third place are 6NT with 98.3%. A shout out also goes to 2KD, 3RD and 4CO who have also finished the week above our school target of 96.5%. The whole school attendance this week is 95.9%: can we beat this next week? The only way to do that is if we all come to school as often as we can. Please remember look at the NHS guide Is my child too ill for school? - NHS (www.nhs.uk) This is used to determine which reasons for absence will be authorised or unauthorised.

let's take a look at what each year group has been up to this week!

EYFS

This week in Pre-school, we launched our new class text, The Gingerbread Man! After decorating delicious gingerbread men, we were shocked to discover that they had “ran, ran, as fast as they can” away from our classroom! We created posters to help find them and, luckily, they all came back just in time for us to gobble them up. Later in the week, as mathematicians, Pre-school helped the Gingerbread Man to recognise and match dot patterns of 1, 2 and 3 using their speedy subitising skills!

This week, our Reception children enjoyed a wonderful trip to This Green Moon in Swillington. They had an amazing day exploring the woods, and taking part in lots of magical activities. The children foraged for sticks to build a fire, created their own woodland creatures out of clay, and made magical bracelets and wands! They also went on a special hunt for Swilligogs (magical creatures in the woodland) before gathering around the fire to roast marshmallows! The whole Reception team were incredibly proud of the children throughout the day! Well done, superstars!

LOWER SCHOOL

This week in Year 1 we have really enjoyed learning about capacity and volume, and the children used vocabulary well to describe concepts such as full and empty. We have also had fun writing instructions on how to catch a star, showing great creativity and imagination. In art, the children explored cool and warm tones using paint. It was also so lovely to celebrate our wonderful children during parents’ evening appointments.

This week, Year 2 have begun learning about fractions and have been focusing on recognising a half. In Computing, the children created their own brilliant knock‑knock jokes, and they have also written fantastic non‑chronological reports about David Attenborough. We loved sharing all of their wonderful work with you during parents’ evening.

This week in History, Year 3 have looked at how travel has changed in Leeds! We made timelines demonstrating our skills in chronology, presenting the benefits of various modes of transport. In Science, we experimented how we can change the shape and size of shadows. We found that changing the distance and angle of the source of light changed our shadows. In English, we published our final drafts of instructions on how to train a dragon, which we loved sharing at parents' evening!

UPPER school

In Science, Year 4 have continued to build on their knowledge of electricity. We have been creating switches and exploring how they can be built into a circuit. In History, we have been deepening our knowledge of the legacies of the Ancient Greeks. In PE, we have continued to develop our running, jumping and throwing skills. A great week Year 4, well done!

This week in Year 5, we began developing our skills in creating the illusion of texture using pencil. As a class, we explored the different types of sketching pencils and how they vary. We also discussed how changing pencil pressure can affect our drawings. Great work, Year 5!

Year 6 had an AMAZING time at residential last week. They climbed, canoed, zip-wired and so much more. So many activities were packed into the 3 days and we can't believe the determination, bravery and support ALL of the children showed throughout their time. The instructors commented on what a wonderful group of children they were and we were so proud to accompany them and see them having such a good time!

Stars of the Week

WE hope everyone has a lovely weekend! We look forward to seeing you back at school on Monday.
