Canbury School Newsletter 20th September 2024. ISSUE 343

Dear Families, Friends, Students and Staff.

It's at this time of the week that we are usually all just about arriving home and looking forward to the weekend. But not this week! Instead I am looking forward to seeing you all in school tomorrow, Saturday, whilst we show case the very best of Canbury at our annual Open Morning.

This is our chance to spread the news about what a great haven of calm, learning and respect this is for those students who would otherwise struggle in a much larger setting. Please do remind your child how much they wanted to come here, and encourage them to graciously offer up this one morning in the year to give something back. Students are due in school at 9.45am in either full uniform or PE kit (they will know what they should wear) and may be collected at midday.

It was my very great pleasure to welcome into School on Wednesday parents and carers of our lovely new Y7 students and new starters. There is always so much to learn and understand when your child joins a new school, and even more so with the transition from primary to secondary school. I think they found it useful, and it's always good to put faces to names. There is definitely already a cohesive feel to the year group - we know it will go from strength to strength.

Finally, we are delighted with our additional learning spaces which have been magically created, by splitting one room in two and building onto the back of School. We are all enjoying having new areas in which to learn. Thank you for everyone's patience whilst the builders finish work outside. We don't think it will be long before they are finally gone.

Until tomorrow,

Mrs Rich – Head.

Students of the week.

Year 7

Congratulations to Sylvie for earning the “Cucumber of Consistency” silver trophy, Max for winning the bronze “Person of the Century” and Miah, Brooke and Ella for achieving the bronze “I ‘CC what you did there” trophy on Dr Frost this week.

Fantastic catching and throwing hands in dodgeball from Aurelia and Ella.

Brooke and Soren for their outstanding contribution in the wellbeing lessons.

Brooke read beautifully this week in her Literacy 1:1 session and tackled her reading and spelling tasks absolutely brilliantly. Mrs Daggett was very proud of her.

Year 8

Excellent participation and effort in Maths this week from Alex, Archie and Elizabeth.

Congratulations to Danai for achieving the gold “Quite good at this Maths Lark” trophy on Dr Frost this week.

Year 9

Congratulations to Theo for achieving the “Feel-o the Kilo” gold trophy on Dr Frost Maths this week.

Excellent work from Ryan, Nico, Lee, Carl and Marley simplifying algebraic expressions in Maths this week.

Great effort from Lysander, Nico (aka Paco) and Alfie (aka Carmen) in Spanish this week.

Well done Rosie and Marley for smashing class work about states of matter in Chemistry lessons this week.

Year 10

Alfie for his excellent effort in Maths lessons.

Well done Rory for conquering his fears at climbing and showing great resilience in the caving session on Wednesday.

Amazing teamwork by Layla, Sophie and Bethany during Physics lesson.

Alfie - again - for his outstanding progress in reaching a personal goal.

Bethany for her reflective thinking in the sessions with Ms Chorazyczewska.

Excellent understanding of the higher level Surds concept by Sophie, Sam and Lloyd in Maths. Ms Boyle says she knows these students could tell you, but for everyone else the take home message is that a surd is a better way to write an irrational number using square roots. So now you know.

Well done to Francesca and Rory for their first GCSE History essays on The Treaty of Versailles. A great effort made by both!

Well done to Francesca, Mani and Lloyd for their great start to Spanish dictation tasks, which is a requirement for the new GCSE.

Year 11

Well done to Eliot for some excellent participation and feedback in English this week.

Brilliant maths skills shown and used in Chemistry this week by Reenie and Logan.

Well done to Sam for effort and excellent engagement in the sessions with Ms Chorazyczewska.

Well done to William for some really good work in History on the Nazi Economy.

Shout out to Brendan for his excellent work on women in Nazi Germany.

Well done Matt, completing Spanish speaking tasks when he suddenly found himself the only pupil in class (and on his birthday as well!)

Sixth Form

Layla for her involvement in the school Eco team. Way to go Layla!

Frankie, Flora and Layla for making new student Lakshmi feel so welcome. We know it can be tricky going into a new school and they were absolutely lovely. It proves what a nurturing Sixth Form we have. Mr Hussain is so proud of you - and actually so is the whole Canbury community.

The perfect prefect! Let them eat cake.....

We are so proud of charity prefect Issy, who this week kicked off our year of fundraising. Issy is going to be perfect in this role. At assembly today she told us all about the charity coffee morning for parents and staff which she has arranged for next Friday, 27th September.

Yesterday she set up our just giving fundraising page, having previously designed a most beautiful poster which is displayed on the TV screen at school. Here is the link to our fundraising page. Parents and carers are invited to join us in the Hall next Friday from 8.15am for an early morning cuppa and/or a slice of cake for a donation.

At break and lunch time it will be the turn of students and staff to come along and buy cakes and other sweet treats. We particularly ask the KS3 students, that's those in Years 7, 8 and 9 to donate goodies. Please remember we are a NUT FREE school. If you are coming to the coffee morning please do let reception know so that we can accommodate everyone. If you are kind enough to donate goods, please feel free to send in from Thursday so we are ready and waiting to serve you Friday morning.

Charity prefect Issy - being respective and supportive.

Students are politely reminded to bring in some cash so they may buy cake - Issy reminded us today she will not be operating an 'I owe you' scheme!

Parents and carers are all invited, next Friday 27th September at 8.15am in the Hall.

Singer/songwriter Natalie coming to Canbury next week.

Natalie Shay - appearing at Canbury next week!

We're excited to share with you that next Friday (it's going to be a busy one!) singer/songwriter Natalie Shay is coming into Canbury to give a live music performance. From 2.15pm we will all gather in the Hall for a real Friday afternoon fun experience. Natalie prides herself on writing relatable lyrics for teens, and delivering vibrant, infectious anthems.

We know this will be an energy-rich event and one which is quite different for school. Please do chat through with your child that this is happening as we know many of us like to be pre-warned about changes in routine and also like to know if something is going to be noisy!
