College Chronicle DECEMBER 2023 EDITION

MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL

After 12 years I am writing my last SVCC Newsletter introduction. This term has had many last time experiences for me. The wonderful truth about last times is it leads to many firsts, as one season closes God opens another season. The College is about to enter a season of growth and blessing under Adam’s leadership. The College’s best days are before it. I pray every blessing on our beautiful community.

What a privilege it has been to serve this community. Southern Vales Christian College will always hold a special place in my heart, and I will treasure the many memories we have made together, as we have sought to develop children and young people to become all that God has designed and created them to be. I will carry fond memories of the time I have spent with students, staff, parents, the Board, church and the broader community.

Thank you for the joy it has been to partner with you and work alongside you. I treasure each one of you. Please enjoy this newsletter with some wonderful articles and photos highlighting our last weeks of school.

I pray you all have an enjoyable Christmas and blessed New Year.

Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. - Luke 2:11

Please enjoy reading about the achievements and experiences of our students.

FASHION AWARDS 2023

MRS JAMES WITH FASHION STUDENTS

This year family and friends celebrated the outstanding passion and creativity of our Senior school students, applauding them as they showcased their skills on the catwalk. For some students, it was a significant opportunity to press out of their comfort zone and develop confidence as they walked on the catwalk. The variety of designs and creative ideas highlighted the uniqueness and God-given talent of each young person. Stage 1 and Stage 2 students had worked tirelessly through the year to perfect their design concepts and create elaborate headpieces for the garment. Issues like sustainability and the impact of fast fashion on our world and its resources were brought to the attention of the audience through statements prepared by the students. It was an outstanding evening, and we were delighted to provide an opportunity to celebrate the boundless creativity of our students.

Nexus Week 2023

Week 8 is our NEXUS week where we focus on some fun STEM activities for the end of the year. This year the focus was on sustainability. The teachers from Foundation -Year 10 created learning opportunities within their lessons around sustainability for the week.

On Monday 4th December every class at Aldinga from Foundation to year 5 came down to the Hart Road wetlands for some sustainable activities. They looked for birds, identified trees and looked for water bugs using nets and magnifying glasses. Thank you to Sally from A Roche and Jeremy from Green Adelaide for joining us and helping with the activities.

The Morphett vale primary classes enjoyed a walk down to the local wetlands on Maderia Drive on Tuesday 5th December. They looked for water bugs and found some tiny fish and little creatures. They also used binoculars to look for birds and plants around the wetlands.

During the Celebration nights at each campus, the students hosted a Sustainable market, selling products that they had made from recycled materials. The classes had made item such as bird feeders, plant pot, pencil holders, bookmarks, puzzles, bags, pillows, worry pets and dog chew toys. Aldinga made $89 and Morphett Vale made $101.

RITE JOURNEY

What a big year we have had in Rite Journey. Our Year 9 students went through an amazing journey of learning, growing and facing challenges. We are very proud of how the students approached these challenges. One challenge that deserves a mention is the 10/10 challenge. Students had 10 weeks to come up with a way to increase $10 to raise funds for charity. The Year 9's did all sorts of things to raise money such as Bandana Day, selling icy poles and baked goods, car washes to name a few. We are proud of their accomplishments, they raised $3,736.30 in total. Well done Year 9's.

The final event for Rite Journey was The Departure - The Rite Journey Dinner. We held this in the evening (Monday, 27th November) at Aldinga Campus. Students, parents and mentors enjoyed a three-course meal prepared by Chef Ben. The dessert was a delicious cake made by ???. A great time was had by all.

A big thank you to Ben, Year 11 Hospitality students, Judy and Year 10 volunteers who helped make the evening so successful. Thank you to the staff who also attended the dinner. Thank you also to Fran Mackie, who is the baker - Frangipanis Cakes, for creating such a wonderful cake.

End of term Chariot Race

The inaugural Chariot Race was held today. Junior school came to cheer the Year 6 to 9 students on. It was a close race with all chariots surviving the 5 laps course. Christmas Patrol were the winners, close second was SVCC express and coming in third Chess Board. The rain held off and everyone had fun on the last day of school for 2023.
