St. Joe County Public Library had an amazing 2024. I’m so proud of what the team here has accomplished. We embarked on the first branch renovation project of our facilities master plan. At the same time, we are seeing the result of our investment in our downtown library with the large number of people and the wide variety of organizations using our Community Learning Center. We, again, brought kindergarteners to the library and gave them library cards. Circulation of books and other materials remains strong, with an increase in the number of digital items checked out. We also offered more programs with more people attending.
At the core of all this work is connection, which is the center of our mission. We connect members of our diverse community to information, resources, culture and each other.
In order to continue to further this mission, we created a strategic plan for 2025-2029. This plan prioritizes access, partnerships, people, and literacy. I’m excited about what this means for our community
I’m so grateful to work in such an amazing library, based in such an amazing city. Our patrons are so supportive, not only evidenced by our list donors, but also by the people who come in regularly for books, events, and just to find community.
2024 marked a major milestone in Our Next Chapter, our 10-year facilities plan. We launched our first major branch renovation with the temporary closure of Centre Branch, which is on track to reopen by Fall 2025. We also secured funding for the next phase of improvements, which is focused on the LaSalle and Western Branches. A key highlight: we officially purchased the Z.B. Falcons building, which will serve as the future home of the Western Branch.
At the end of 2024, we secured bond financing for the planned renovation of the LaSalle Branch. This will modernize the space with flexible, welcoming areas for reading, studying, and community gatherings. A 2,000 sq. ft. expansion will add a community art studio, lounge, and reservable study rooms. Interior upgrades include new furniture, lighting, paint, and carpet, along with a travel-themed children’s play area inspired by the branch’s proximity to the airport and commuter train. Enhanced landscaping with native plants will beautify the grounds and attract pollinators like butterflies and hummingbirds.
Thanks to financing from the bond approved by St. Joseph County Council in 2024, we’re moving forward with plans to relocate the Western Branch Library. Just half a mile from its current site, the new location at 323 S. Sheridan—formerly the Z.B. Falcons building—will offer greater visibility, improved access, and transform the property. This updated facility on Western Avenue will provide a modern, welcoming environment designed to foster learning and strengthen community connections.
The Centre Branch project began in 2024 and features scheduled maintenance, interior renovations, and a reimagined outdoor experience. Upgrades include native landscaping, HVAC and lighting improvements, new signage, refreshed finishes, paint, carpeting, and furniture. The project also includes a reconfigured main entrance and meeting rooms, upgraded restrooms, new study rooms, and an space for kids designed for imaginative play.
