Travel to Peru to engage in hands on service work alongside members of the Calca community. Past projects have included the building of a community kitchen, construction of a food garden and schoolhouse dormitories. Working with Global Works in community development service initiatives, students will determine their own sense of purpose, cultivate curiosity about the world, learn how to make a difference in the community and gain a broader perspective on life. Additionally, they will have the opportunity to explore local indigenous communities to learn about the traditional lifestyle language and culture.
Day 1- Travel Day
The day started at 2:30am when the group met and headed to the airport to begin our travel day. Our first flight was about 3 1/2 hours which landed us in Miami. We had a brief layover and then caught our next flight to Lima which was 6 hours. One more flight early tomorrow morning will bring us to our next destination Cusco.
Day 2: Travel & Cusco City!
The day began with a short flight to Cusco. When we landed we headed straight to Plaza Armas where we were able to enjoy a delicious lunch at a Peruvian restaurant. Some students even tried Alpaca for the first time. After lunch the group was able to check out Plaza Armas before we boarded the bus to head to our next destination. On our way to Calca we stopped at a Lama Farm. The group was able to feed the lamas and interact with Alpacas, Huanacos, and Condor Birds. We learned a lot about how clothing is made and how to distinguish different types of Alpacas. The group was also able to try Moona tea which is used to help boost your immune system. The group would then embark on a 2 hour drive to our destination for the next 3 days Culca. We enjoyed a nice dinner catered by locals from the city and a fire to cap off the night.
