Sharing with Friends nursery, autumn term, week 4

This week we’ve been learning all about sharing, using The Rainbow Fish story to get us started. The children really enjoyed hearing how the Rainbow Fish became happier when he shared his shiny scales with others. We’ve had lots of lovely chats and activities around being kind, taking turns, and what it means to be a good friend – and it’s been so lovely to see them putting it into practice!

Using The Rainbow Fish as our inspiration, the children painted their own rainbow fish, complete with glittery scales. You’ll be pleased to hear they shared their scales with kindness and care, just like in the story!

The children also used toys and props to retell the story from memory. In small groups, we counted the scales together, practising how to say the numbers from one to ten in order.

The children’s interest in mark making is really growing. We’ve been exploring the writing we see all around us, and the children are starting to see themselves as writers too. Almost everyone can now write the first letter of their name, and we’re beginning to see strings of letter-like symbols appearing in their work—an important developmental step on the journey to writing. Please support them with this at home by making sure they have easy access to pencils, pens, and paper. The more writing they do, the better!

I'll leave you with a few photos of the children enjoying our cosy reading space. It’s been lovely to see them so engaged with books—sharing stories, exploring favourites, and discovering new ones together.
