This project will explore the junction of traditional ceramic construction with modern robotic and automated technologies. Addressing both functional and sculptural challenges, students will come up with unique ways to incorporate robotic elements into their work.
Day 1
Monday marked a great start to our journey in electroceramics, and we learned many things. Some of these things surprised both my classmates and me. The most common fact that surprised everyone in our groups was the complex process of creating a ceramic piece. The vocabulary, tools, and techniques for creating a piece undoubtedly surprised our group. Also, the different types of clay were a surprise to Ryan, Landon, and myself, as we mentioned in our discussion how the types of clay fascinated us. Lastly, the part of the process that surprised me most was the techniques when it came to touching up the artwork. The different methods of reinforcing, binding, and cleaning the artwork to make it look presentable surprised me the most. Inconclusion, we learned many things regarding the process of creating a ceramic piece. It brought many surprises to the group, and we can’t wait to resume again tomorrow! -Jackson
Day 3
My favorite part of today’s adventures was exploring different parts of the city with our group. We started at the Harvard Fab Lab, which was really interesting, and then walked together to the Pucker Gallery. One of the best surprises was stopping at a Japanese pastry shop along the way, the treats were delicious! After that, we returned to the hotel for a quick reset before heading to Quincy Market for dinner, most of us just had pizza. To end the night, some of us went to the hotel pool to relax and have fun. It was a great mix of learning, exploring, and enjoying good food with friends. -Ryan
Day 4
There were a couple of things that surprised the group when we went to the studios in New Bedford, but there were a couple of things that stood out. The different ways of making clay creations were the most common surprise within the group, as we got to experience a mixture of different colored clays at Fallon’s studio. At New Bedford Research and Robotics, watching a robot print out an object made completely out of clay was also something that surprised me. It was jaw-dropping to whiteness a robot print out something with clay, as clay is hard to work with, and it does it with surprising precision. Lastly, learning about residencies for artists was something that surprised us as well. I found it unique and interesting to learn about how artists go to different areas to focus in on their work and creations. It shows their true desire and passion that goes into make these pieces. In conclusion, many things surprised our group today, and we can’t wait to finish our creations! -Jackson
