New to the Collection Highlights

Find Me After by A. Connors

After suffering an epileptic seizure, Kyle finds himself in a world that looks like ours but where nothing feels the same. This is the Stillness: an eerie, liminal alternative reality populated by those who are caught between life and death. Here, he meets his real-world crush, Farah, who is also unconscious back home. But as they get to know each other in the Stillness, they must face the possibility of forgetting each other in the real world. The way back to life is fraught with danger, and time, for both, is running out.

Rebel Heart by Ally Sherrick

England, 1645. Merriweather Pryce is the daughter of a nobleman fighting for King Charles I in a war that divides the country. When her family home is besieged by Cromwell's army, Merri sets out to get help. But in a land filled with enemy soldiers, turncoats and spies, who can she really trust?

Take a Chance on Me by Elizabeth Eulberg

Evie is heartbroken and betrayed when a video of her confronting her cheating ex-boyfriend goes viral, so what's a girl to do? Flee to London for the summer, of course! Evie loves everything about London, the double decker buses, afternoon tea, history around every corner. Everything, that is but having to stay with the person who's hurt her most of all, her father. Desperate for a distraction from their contentious relationship, Evie spends her days wandering the historic streets where, as though fate is intervening, she keeps meeting a charming and beautiful British busker named Aiden.

The Boy in the Suit by James Fox

Ten year old Solo just wants to be normal. He wants a name that doesn't stand out. He wishes he had a proper school uniform that fitted him. He dreams about a mum who doesn't get the Big Bad Reds. But most of all he longs to stop crashing funerals for the free food. But when Solo and Morag crash the funeral of a celebrity and get caught, the press is there to witness their humiliation. The next day it's splashed across the papers. Before Solo knows it, he becomes a viral sensation, and life may never be normal again.

The Disappearing Circus by Kate Gordon & Helen Edwards

Step right up and prepare for the most magical show of them all! When Emme and Ivy—two runaway girls weighed down by grief—stumble upon a strange circus on the moors, they are flung together, as they discover a world unlike any other. Ghostly performers, mythical creatures, and a Ring mistress with dark secrets await them beneath the blood-red Big Top. A whimsical story, which will enchant the reader from the outset.

The Last Tiger by Julia Riew & Brad Riew

A compelling fantasy novel loosely based on the author’s grandparents fight to free Korea from Japanese rule in the 1940s. Seung and Eunji are both wonderful characters – adventurous, kind, fierce, loyal and daring. An inspiring story of friendship, love, perseverance, resilience and determination to fight for their freedom, all entwined with the magical Dragon and Tiger spirits. It will be well loved by fantasy readers.

Wish I was a Baller by Amar Shah & Illustrated by Rashad Doucet

A memoir in graphic novel format brings a different element to this genre. It chronicles Amar Shah’s real-life experiences as a fourteen-year-old sports journalist covering the golden era of the NBA, when he befriended Shaquille O’Neal and hung out with Michael Jordan and the Bulls – all while still in high school. A story that sport lovers are sure to enjoy.

Salesforce excursion a big hit!

A group of Year 8 and 9 students attended an excursion at Salesforce last term and loved delving into this global software company. The students learnt about AI and its various applications, including for real world problems they were passionate about. Students also got a tour of the Salesforce tower and got to interview a panel of technology professionals. They got to ask how they worked their way up within the industry and how to seek employment after school through CV writing. It was a fantastic day had by all, and students were already asking when they could come back to Salesforce, whilst still at the excursion.

Our thanks to Ms Sand and Mrs Stell for organising.

Volleyball fundraising

The school Volleyball team has been flying to the Gold Coast for several years to compete in the Schools Cup. We have had some good success over the years. Stars of the court Harrison, Anthony DJ, Anthony N, Jahrone, Tristian, Sora and Finlay and a host of others have all helped with several recent Barbeques held at Bunnings we raised over $3000 which will go towards airfares, accommodation and other expenses.

It is great to see the squad work together on and off the court for the betterment of the school and themselves. We are lucky to have such fine young people and Volleyball players.

Mr Shan is not only a coach and mentor but also a chef of some skill who once again lead the team with the tongs. A large shout out also needs to go to Mrs Stephenson the and Mrs Filippakis of the TAS faculty who always lend us their equipment!!

Good work to everyone who helped out.

Spotlight - Career Ideas

Career Spotlight - Youth Worker

You don’t need to have all the answers to be a Youth Worker. What matters most is a caring attitude, being a good listener, and genuinely wanting to support young people through life’s challenges.

What is a Youth Worker?

A Youth Worker supports young people facing challenges like mental health issues, family problems, or trouble at school. They help teens build skills, set goals, and connect with community resources. Youth Workers might run programs, provide one-on-one support, or advocate for young people in schools or social services. The goal of a Youth Worker is to empower youth to make positive choices and thrive within their lives.

What skills and strengths are needed?

Strong communication and empathy are essential. Youth Workers need to listen carefully and build trust with young people. Problem-solving and patience help when working through complex issues. Good teamwork and understanding of social issues are important, along with being organised and adaptable. Cultural awareness is crucial, and some roles also require basic counselling skills.

What are the pathways?

You can start by completing a Certificate IV in Youth Work or Community Services. Many Youth Workers also go on to study diplomas or degrees in social work, community services or youth work. Volunteering with youth groups, mentoring or working in community centres is a great way to gain experience. Building connections through placements or internships helps open doors into this rewarding career.

Career Spotlight - Journalist

As a Journalist - you learn as you go!

What matters most is asking the right questions, listening carefully and telling stories that help people understand what’s really going on.

What is a Journalist?

A Journalist researches, writes, and edits news stories to inform the public about what’s happening in the world. They might cover topics like politics, the environment, social issues, entertainment, or sport. Journalists often work for newspapers, magazines, websites, or news outlets, creating articles that are clear, factual, and engaging. Some focus on breaking news, while others write feature stories or opinion pieces. At the heart of journalism is storytelling, with truth, fairness and accuracy at the core.

What Skills and Strengths are Needed?

Strong writing and communication skills are essential for turning complex ideas into clear, readable stories. Journalists need to be curious, ask great questions, and know how to research facts thoroughly. Good time management helps with meeting deadlines, and resilience is important when stories don’t go to plan. Being observant, open-minded and ethical helps journalists cover a wide range of people and perspectives. Confidence to interview others and the patience to listen carefully, are also key strengths in this field.

What are the Pathways?

Many journalists start by studying journalism, media, or communications through a Diploma, or a university degree like a Bachelor of Communications (Journalism). English, Media, and Humanities subjects in school can help build early skills. Gaining experience is important, so writing for your school magazine, blog, or local paper is a great way to begin. Internships, student media, and freelance writing can help you build a portfolio. Over time, journalists may specialise in areas like politics, sport, health, or culture - where their voice and storytelling skills can make a real impact.

Congratulations to Abi M - Year 10

VALID Science 8 assessment

Dear Parents and Carers,

During Term 4 students in Year 8 will participate in the VALID Science assessment. The VALID assessment is a NSW Department of Education online assessment available to schools to assess and monitor student learning in science.

This is a diagnostic test, with tasks framed on Stage 4 outcomes and essential content in the NSW Science Years 7–10 Syllabus (2018). Students will be tested on their:

  • Knowledge and understanding of science
  • Understanding and skills in the process of scientific investigation
  • Ability to evaluate evidence, make judgements and think critically
  • Ability to access information and communicate scientific ideas.

The assessment can supplement existing school practices to identify how students are performing in science and to help teachers tailor their teaching more specifically to student needs. Students with disability may receive the same level of support during the assessment they would normally receive in the classroom.

The assessment will be scheduled for our Year 8 students during Weeks 3- Monday 27th October periods 1 and 2. A catch up session will be held on Wednesday 5th November periods 1 and 2.

A personalised electronic report describing the knowledge and skills demonstrated by your child in the test will later be available from the school.

Students will be asked to bring headphones or earbuds that plug into a computer to enable them to hear audio during the assessment. Earbuds used for mobile phones or other portable devices may be suitable for use during the assessment. The type of computer connection needed is a 3.5mm jack. Where required, the assessment platform provides an on-screen standard calculator which can be used for calculations.
