Who Will Help Me? Reception class, Autumn Term, Week 9

'Who will help me..?' is a key phrase from our story The Little Red Hen and the core message of our learning this half term; about how we can both give help and receive help from our community.

If you would like to hear the story at home, this is an excellent version with Makaton added. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HEJPSPNv3Do

We've learnt new vocabulary (for example 'corn, flour, dough, knead,') through hands on exploration. It was gloriously messy!

Rehearsing the story-map so the children are able to retell the story. Click here to watch.

The maths focus this week has been 2D shapes. We went on a shape hunt.

A huge circle.
Drawing 2D shapes.
Sorting shapes according to type.
Small group work to identify shapes and talk about shape properties.
Working together and talking about the shapes.
We looked at famous artist Kandinsky and his art involving 2D shapes.

Outside there has been den building, bike riding, climbing and lots of helping each other during play.

And finally a few other highlights from the week. Mrs Taylor helped us cook with real food in the play kitchen and the children have loved reading stories, drawing and writing in their independent learning.

Next week we would like to invite you to come into the classroom at 3.10pm on Wednesday (via the usual gates) to hear from our phonics lead Mrs Finlay. She will explain how your child is learning to read and write using the Read Write Inc programme, and offer helpful suggestions to support learning at home. Thanks.
