Message from our Principal
CAPA Showcase
Our last two weeks at Mullumbimby High School have been awash with creativity and success. It has been wonderful to watch the evolution of works for our CAPA Showcase and see the students bring their works to the public. Thanks must go to our very dedicated team of Creative and Performing Arts teachers who have been working behind the scenes to bring the shows together. We are a creative community and having our community share our student success with us has been such a pleasure.
Preliminary Examinations
This week and into next week, our Year 11 students will be completing their final exams for the HSC Preliminary Course. Having our new hall in action this year has made things much more comfortable for students as they undertake their examination.
Professional Learning for our Staff
Yesterday afternoon, all staff engaged in some professional learning in Trauma Informed Practice. This accredited, evidence based and research informed, professional learning, for education staff assists us to keep up to date on best practice to support our young people and their families. The alarming statistics that we looked at from the Australian Child Maltreatment Study (40.2% of 16-34 year olds of the 8500 surveyed reported multiple maltreatment types, 43.8% reported exposure to domestic violence) really highlighted that our schools are part of a greater ecosystem of society. What this means in a single classroom setting is that approximately 10 students per class have experienced multiple forms of maltreatment and 11 students in a class have been exposed to domestic violence. These are just two of the forms of maltreatment that have a trauma impact on people in our Australian communities, no matter their postcode.
The positive news is that PCEs or Positive Childhood Experiences such as family foundation, family resilience, the school, the community and a positive adult presence, provide a buffer against adversity and promote lifelong wellbeing. Positive relationships at school really matter and having an adult in your world who is your champion can make all the difference to a child or young person. With over 70 staff here at MHS with this knowledge, we are sure that we can help to be a PCE for our students.
Homework Club
A reminder that homework club operates in our library every Thursday afternoon and is a great opportunity for students to catch up on assessment tasks or have apace for quite study prior to exams.
Farewell to the Year 12 2025 Cohort
Next week will be our Year 12 student’s final week of secondary schooling. They will have a week of final revision and some celebratory activities as well. Their Presentation Assembly will take place on Thursday 25 September at 9:15. Parents, Carers and Community Members are invited to celebrate this milestone for our Year 12 students.
Every Day Matters
As the term draws to a close next week, a reminder that Every Day Matters. Every day, students can be learning and improving on their skills and building their social skills with friends at school. Friday of week 10 is an official school day. Let’s break the false belief that we don’t do anything on the last day of term. We do. We continue to learn, engage with each other and create lasting memories for the future.
