Internships and work experience are a proven method of getting your foot in the door. ~ Duane Strauss
What is an internship?
An internship is a period of work experience offered by an employer to give students and graduates exposure to the working environment, often within a specific industry, which relates to their field of study. Internships can be paid or unpaid, take place over a short or long period of time, with expectations that differ from industry to industry. Interns are expected to demonstrate professionalism, meet deadlines, and show initiative just as an employee would. However, the focus of the internship will be on the learning and growth goals that have been set by the student and employer.
Benefits of an Internship
Gain skills and experience
One of the most important benefits of doing an internship is that you’ll gain skills and experience that you can use for future jobs and classes. Completing an internship that relates to a job you may want to have will help you get relevant work experience and a better chance of getting a full-time job in that field in the future. The experiences and skills you gain during your internship can also help you in future classes as well.
SAMPLE VARIOUS CAREERS
Doing an internship is a great, low-risk way to learn about different jobs because they provide hands-on experience and the opportunity to observe many different aspects of a career. It’s much better to figure out a career that is a good fit during high school rather than after you have finished college and spent four years and thousands of dollars.
BUILD RELATIONSHIPS
Completing an internship allows you to connect with your supervisor and co-workers while demonstrating your interpersonal skills, technical skills, and your ability to learn on the job. These relationships will allow you to build your professional network, ask for letters of reference, and possibly lead to a job offer.
