2023 Town of Amherst Award recipients
Marcia, Practical Nursing, Cumberland Campus
"Thank you so much for your generous award. The impact this award will have on myself, my family and my education is huge. I am a single mother of two girls and all the great responsibilities that come along with being a single mom, one of them is working. I am not able to work very much because going to school is full time for me. This award will allow me to have some peace of mind and allow me to focus on my studies as well as look after my girls. Without generous people like you, people like me could not follow their dreams!"
"This is my second time attending NSCC, I first attended in 2012 to 2014 with the CCA Link program, my experience was absolutely amazing. NSCC had just brought back the Practical Nurse program in 2013 and I decided then I wanted to go back to school to take that program after completing the CCA program. I wasn’t able to financially afford to go right away so I worked within Amherst as well as Cumberland County as a CCA with a few different organizations such as VON, Shannex, NS Health and private homecare in Amherst. I love being a CCA but I have always wanted to be a nurse so that’s what I am pursuing as a career.
My biggest goal is to graduate from NSCC from the Practical Nursing program, I would not be able to do that without your support. I intend to work in Amherst after graduation as I was born and raised here, so as you're supporting me at this time, I will maybe be a support for you or your family someday and you will be able to see firsthand how you impacted my future.
I just really want to thank you so much. When a student like me gets an award like you are offering it empowers them to push through all the struggles and reach for their dreams knowing they are being supported. Thank you from me and my family."

"Awards like this have made it possible for me to attend NSCC. I have had some financial struggles recently that has made it difficult and stressful to meet my bills. This award will be put towards relieving that stress. I am so thankful."
"I was previously in a bachelors program for psychology. I loved psychology but university was not for me. I have always loved children and my partner suggested NSCC to me, specifically the ECE program. I did some research and fell in love with the hands on approach and the child specific courses. I am in my second semester of year one and I couldn't be happier with this decision. This is where I am meant to be.
My goal after my diploma is to work in a daycare for a couple years and work on my child youth study degree at MSVU. After I've completed that and saved up some money, I want to open my own daycare to help with the current childcare desert problem we have.
I have only considered Amherst home since 2021/22 but I have been welcomed by all of the people who live her. Amherst is my home and it's where I want to build my career and raise my children. This money allows me to continue pursuing my dreams and make them a reality. From the bottom of my heart, I thank you."
