PROGRAM OVERVIEW
The event was divided into three interactive sessions: Art, Math, and Science. Each session was led by Curry faculty members and students from a range of Education programs.
Art - Facilitated by Professor Julie Martini, Associate Professor of Visual Arts | Light is an important link between science and art. Artists use light to bring their work to life in many media from painting, where light is described, to stained glass, which uses physical light as a material. Students created a collage using translucent materials that interact with light.
Math - Facilitated by Dr. Laura Callis, Associate Professor, Natural Sciences and Mathematics (Mathematics Education) | Light can help us understand mathematical ideas, like angles and reflection. Students explored tricks mirrors play, how kaleidoscope patterns are made, and the relationship between the angle of a hinged mirror and the number of repeated motifs in a design by creating their own kaleidoscope patterns with mirrors.
Science - Facilitated by Professor Sandor Kadar, Senior Lecture, Natural Sciences and Mathematics | This investigation observed how light is reflected or absorbed and how that impacts our color perception, using gummy bears and lasers.
FROM CURRY EDUCATORS
"My favorite part of this event was working with students and teaching them the science behind phenomena that they probably never thought about. Because of the preparation from my professors and field experience over the last three years, I had the confidence and content knowledge to answer questions in a manner that 5th-grade students could understand." -Gabbie McKendry '25, Elementary Education
"The goals for this great event were multilayered. For the fifth graders, we wanted them to explore science, math, and art in a new way, to see how they're connected and how they can be fun! We also wanted them to imagine themselves going to college by visiting our campus and talking with Curry students and professors. For our Education majors, we wanted to give them authentic practice by eliciting and listening to kids' thinking about science, math, and art." - Dr. Laura Callis, Associate Professor of Natural Sciences and Mathematics (Mathematics Education)
We would like to extend a warm thank you to all Curry faculty who helped make this event a success!
