What is Vevox?
Vevox is an audience response system that offers polling, quizzing and survey functionality. You can access this online through a website, add it to your Microsoft Teams meeting, as well as adding it to Moodle.
There are many polling technologies on offer, but we have recently renewed our license for another three years with Vevox, allowing staff and students to access the platform for free!
How can Vevox support my teaching?
Vevox can help support you in the classroom by creating an engaging experience and encourage active learning when delivering your sessions, both in person and/or on-line. It can be used to support student led teaching to identify knowledge and understanding. This is particularly useful when adopting the flipped classroom model to gauge understanding.
Using the anonymous feature has also been proven to be very successful when encouraging students to ask questions. When students know their name isn't being recorded, they are more likely to ask questions to help build their understanding. If you want to find out more, you can visit the Vevox website for a list of how other universities are using Vevox.
UWTSD Senior Lecturer and Employability Skills Program Manager Ffion Cumberpatch has been using Vevox to bring gamification into her sessions - resulting in a marked increase in student engagement. Her approach is featured in a recent Vevox success story, where Ffion shared how the platform has positively impacted her teaching experience.

Vevox top tips on getting started:
There are a huge range of options and opportunities when it comes to using the live polling features, but here are their top 3 simple, yet highly effective methods they recommend you try first:
- Include an ice breaker question - Ideal for getting all the students on board, particularly at the beginning of a course or class. The word cloud feature can’t be beaten here!
- Check knowledge - A few polls early in a lecture allows you to fine tune your content based on the knowledge levels in the room, and check that understanding is sufficient before moving forward. A popular method is to ask knowledge checking questions again at the end of the class to compare the results.
- Ask your participants if the session was valuable - It’s rare a class is 100% perfect. Continuously improve your classes by asking students for their feedback. The simplest form is a ‘star rating’ poll which you can run as a ‘live’ poll or self-paced survey question, the results of which you don’t have to display back to the class! Also fantastic for internal reporting.
