WHITKIRK NEWS 3rd October 2025

A message from Miss quarmBY

Hello! I hope you're all well and having a great week. We had a fantastic start to the week with the Cross Country competition at Temple Moor High School. Huge thanks to Mr Stout, Miss Richardson and Miss Appleyard for taking our pupils — they were all incredible! We’re especially proud to have come away as winners for Years 4, 5, and 6. The children looked brilliant in their competition kits! Our October Holiday Club is now open, with places available on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. If you’d like to book a place for your child, please contact the office. Spaces are limited and will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. Please note that the club will only run if we have enough bookings. Also, please help us spread the word about our EYFS Open Evening on 12th November. It’s always a well-attended event, and we’re really proud to showcase our school to families considering a place for September 2026. Have a wonderful weekend!

Our October Holiday Club will be open from Tuesday to Thursday, with a daily rate of £35. Opening hours are 8:00 AM to 5:30 PM, and breakfast and an evening snack are included — please remember to pack a lunch for your child. To book a place, email: wpswraparound@wps.rklt.co.uk. Places are limited, so we kindly ask that bookings are made by Monday 13th October. Please note that payment must be made by Wednesday 22nd October to secure your child’s place.

Attendance

This week, finishing in first place with 100% are 1VM. In second place are 4AB, with 99.2% and in third place are 2CH, with 98.61%. A shout out also goes to YNAT, 1LR, 2KD, 4AR, 5AS, 5AK and 6NT, who have also finished the week above our school target of 96.5%. The whole school attendance this week is 96.9%: can we beat this next week? The only way to do that is if we all come to school as often as we can.

Please remember look at the NHS guide Is my child too ill for school? - NHS (www.nhs.uk) This is used to determine which reasons for absence will be authorised or unauthorised.

let's take a look at what each year group has been up to this week!

EYFS

This term, the children in Pre-School are exploring the work of Yayoi Kusama, an artist who loves using bright colours and dots in her artwork. They started their journey by making prints with fingers and hands, discovering the fun of leaving our own special marks on the paper. This week, the children have been experimenting with round objects to make dotty prints, just like Kusama! They are learning that artists can use all sorts of tools - not just paintbrushes-to make pictures.

This week in Reception, the children set off to Forest School to forage for signs of autumn. They gathered seasonal treasures such as colourful leaves, spiky horse chestnut shells, and plenty of sticks. Together, they sorted and compared their collections, using their observation skills to notice patterns, textures, and colours. The session gave the children the chance to explore the woodland environment, connect with nature, and continue developing their understanding of our Forest School rules and routines.

LOWER school

In Year 1 this week, we’ve been busy and creative across all our subjects! In Maths, the children have been exploring addition stories and learning how to write them in full sentences. In English, we’ve been using our story map to help us write lovely sentences based on our class text, The Magpie’s Treasure. During Music, we had great fun experimenting with a variety of instruments, focusing on dynamics and tempo to explore different sounds. In Art, we’ve been learning about tone, and the children have been shading carefully to show light and dark. Well done, Year 1!

This week, Year 2 have been busy publishing their amazing narratives and sharing them with pride. In Maths, we have been practising counting in 3s and using this to spot number patterns. In Science, we completed our investigation into what seeds need in order to germinate.

We have had another super week in Year 3. In Science, we discovered differences between vertebrates and invertebrates. We went on a mini beast hunt and found that all the creatures around our school grounds were invertebrates with no internal skeleton! In English, we have been learning to write with adverbs and time adverbials to help us write our instructions to the recycling centre on how to build an Iron Man. We can't wait to create our own metal characters and write our independent instructions. In DT, we have made the packaging for our sweet treats: bring on the baking!

UPPER school

What a brilliant week it’s been in Year 4! In Maths, the children have been building on their knowledge of Roman Numerals, moving from 20 all the way up to 100, and showing great determination along the way. In English, they’ve been busy expanding their vocabulary to bring their spooky setting descriptions to life—we can’t wait to see their final pieces! DT was a real highlight this week as the children baked and tasted their own prototype muffins; they gave each other some thoughtful feedback and had lots of fun in the process. In Geography, the class enjoyed exploring the app what3words and used it to discover the exact locations of some of Europe’s most famous landmarks.

Year 5 have been superstar Scientists this week as they learnt about the eight phases of the moon. We were impressed with the children's confidence when using new key terminology such as lunation. We then represented this using Oreos! Well done, Year 5.

Year 6 have been enjoying their hands on experiences in their Science topic this half term - Body Pump. Last week we had a visit from Dr Hart, who provided an in-depth explanation into the workings of the heart through dissection. This week, we used plasticine to make models of the main structures of the heart. The children's engagement and enthusiasm throughout these learning experiences has been great to see.

STARS OF THE WEEK

HAVE A LOVELY Weekend! WE'LL SEE YOU BACK IN SCHOOL next week!
