Alexander Fleming Primary 7 learner

Alexander Fleming is an incredible man who discovered Penicillin, a medicine. It is used to treat various illnesses all over the world today.

Life before discovery

Alexander was born on the 6th of August 1881 in Darvel. Growing up, he had 6 siblings, Jane Fleming, Grace Fleming, Mary Fleming, Thomas Fleming, Robert Fleming, and Hugh Fleming. Alexander attended Loudon Moor school, Darvel school, and Kilmarnock Academy. He really enjoyed school and was top in class. In 1915, he married Sarah Fleming, a nurse from Ireland, and they had a child together, Robert Fleming.

How he discovered penicillin

In 1928, Alexander returned from a holiday in Suffolk, to find Mold growing on a petri dish of bacteria. He noticed that the Mold prevented the bacteria around it from growing. He soon discovered that the Mold produced a self-defence chemical that could kill bacteria.

Life after the discovery

Because of alexanders spectacular discovery, in 1945, he was awarded the noble prize. Sadly, in 1949, Sarah his wife, passed away. so, years later in 1953, Alexander was married to Amalia Fleming.

Penicillin/ Amoxicillin can be administered via tablet or liquid in different flavours. Sadly, after his amazing discovery, on 11th March 1955, he passed away, and was buried in London's St Pauls Cathedral. Even though he died, his discovery is still remembered, and used all over the world today.

Evaluation

I think Alexander Fleming is a hero, (by accident!) because he discovered a medicine that has saved so many lives.
