Sardinia & Corsica August 2024

The Mediterrean islands of Sardinia and Corsica are spectacular during the summer. August is the peak season, attracting large crowds. Nowadays, reservations are required for the most sought-after beaches. Nevertheless, there are still numerous stunning beaches that offer ample space.

The Italian city of Alghero serves as an excellent starting point, boasting a well-connected airport. The city itself is stunning, offering superb dining, shopping, and excursions to nearby attractions. It's an excellent spot to watch the sunset.

The Grotte di Nettuno offers a magical experience near Capo Caccia, accessible by boat if you wish to bypass the Escala del Cabirol's 654 steps. Although the climb is strenuous, the views are breathtaking. Inside the cave, a steady temperature of 16 to 18 degrees Celsius (61 to 64 degrees Fahrenheit) provides a cool respite from the summer warmth.

Located about 45 minutes from Alghero, Spiaggia Della Pelosetta is one of Sardinia's most sought-after beaches. In August, securing access requires an online reservation, only obtained through a lottery at 8 am, 48 hours in advance, which can be quite challenging.

On the journey from Alghero to Santa Teresa de Gallura, a must-visit is the vibrant town of Castelsardo. A short drive from the town leads you to Roccia dell'Elefante, also known as Elephant's Rock.

Santa Teresa de Gallura is an excellent choice for an extended stay, offering a plethora of activities, top-notch restaurants, shopping, and some of the finest beaches. However, due to overtourism, the town's beach, Spiaggia Rena Bianca, now necessitates online reservations, which become available at 8 am, 72 hours prior to the intended visit.

From Santa Teresa, numerous excursion options are available to the La Maddalena Archipelago and Corsica. These trips offer the opportunity to explore picturesque villages and secluded beaches with crystal-clear waters.

The excursion to the La Maddalena Archipelago begins with Cala de Santa Maria. En route to Spargi, the tour passes by Budelli's pink sand beach, which is closed to the public to preserve its delicate environment.

The highlight of the excursion is undoubtedly Cala Corsara on the island of Spargi. It offers an excellent spot for swimming and hiking up the hills to capture the most breathtaking views.

Next up, a brief visit to the vibrant port town of Maddalena, followed by a return to Santa Teresa de Gallura.

Just a 10-minute drive from Santa Teresa lies Capo Testa. This destination is perfect for hiking among the granite boulders, swimming at Cala Spinosa, and watching a stunning sunset from the lighthouse.

Capriccioli is undoubtedly among the most stunning beaches in Sardinia, with its usual crystal-clear turquoise waters. However, like many sought-after Mediterranean beaches, the peak of overtourism in August has led to algae blooms, which have caused the waters to turn green.

A short distance from Capriccioli lies Porto Cervo, known for its luxurious yachts, upscale designer boutiques, and exquisite gourmet dining options.

Spiaggia La Liccia, located approximately 20 minutes by car from Santa Teresa, is among the loveliest beaches. Though not as famous as some, it offers an excellent experience with ample space for all visitors. The water is crystal clear, the sand is soft and delicate, and there is the added benefit of free parking.

Nestled between Santa Teresa and Olbia, Spiaggia Porto Liscia is an off-the-beaten-path beach. This golden sandy beach boasts cleanliness, easy access with complimentary parking, and a variety of sports activities. A short distance away, across from Isola dei Gabbiani, lies the vibrant village of Porto Pollo.

Directly across the Mediterranean Sea from Santa Teresa, Bonifacio is situated on the French island of Corsica. Regular ferry services cross the 21 km channel, offering access not only to the city but also to the unspoiled beaches along the Corsican coastline.

Following a few hours in Bonifacio, the journey proceeded to the Corsican islands of ÃŽle Piana and ÃŽle Lavezzi, renowned for their crystal-clear waters and stunning beaches.

For more than five centuries, the city of Sassari has celebrated La Discesa dei Candelieri every 14th of August. Thirteen elaborately decorated wooden 'candles' are carried on the shoulders of participants who descend from Piazza Castello to the Church of Santa Maria of Betlem.

Italian cuisine is renowned for its exquisite flavors, and Sardinia offers a rich selection of seafood, traditional Italian fare, and unique regional dishes. Among these, the Seada stands out: a generous fried pastry filled with cheese and sumptuously drizzled with honey.
