Tadpoles (Nursery)
The children in Tadpoles love exploring the wildlife area as part of their learning time. When talking about the seasons, the children could tell each other that it was Winter. They noticed the old brown leaves on the floor and that the trees didn't have any leaves. We looked in the pond but couldn't see any creatures. We talked about how cold it was and that it might be too cold for them. Some of the children thought the frogs may return when, "It gets a bit warmer."
Frogs (Reception)
We love learning in Frogs so we invited our parents to come and watch how we learn in our phonics session. We then invited our parents in to come and work alongside us in our Maths session. We have been learning all about subtraction and we have even been writing calculations!
This is what some of our parents said:
“I have really enjoyed helping Jack learn and understand how to subtract. It is really helpful when we are at home so I can understand Jack. Thank you for having us!”
“I like the use of the pick sticks so everyone gets a chance to share their ideas.”
“It was great to see the children practising maths and how far they are able to count! Excellent class.”
We are looking forward to sharing our learning when we invite our Grandparents in on Tuesday 18th March.
Young Voices
Mrs Dolby would like to make a special mention to all the parents and children of the Young Voices Choir. What an absolutely fantastic event!
Well done to the children for all their hard work and dedication in learning the songs, and showing impeccable behaviour throughout the long performance day. You showcased Pilgrim amazingly. Thank you to all the parents and guardians too. You made the day even more special by travelling to Sheffield and watching your children shine. You should be so proud.
Year 1 and Year 2
Dragonflies have loved their learning last month!
- We are now learning phase 5 alternative sounds in phonics and our mock screening scores just keep going up and up!
- In English, we learned to be authors and wrote our own non-fiction books about the animals of the Savannah. These are on display in our classrooms if you would like to come and visit.
- We learned how to use money in Maths, this was particularly fun when Mrs Portlock made a pretend shop in the classroom.
- Freddie thinks “Our learning about Florence Nightingale has been so interesting, we now know that she wanted to be a nurse when she was as old as we are!”
- In geography, we have learned more about the different climates and how it controls the extreme weather.
- Our PE was funny, we enjoyed making dances to stories as a group.
- We also found it funny in music when we had to make sounds with our bodies and voices for the sounds of the seaside!
- In science, we have been learning about the seasons and we can now see the changes to the trees as we go into Spring.
- We finished the half term making moving monsters in DT using levers and linkages. We put our faces on them to make them extra scary!
In Year 1 and 2 we are looking forward to reading 'The Snail and the Whale’, by Julia Donaldson. Using this text the children will be exposed to a variety of writing opportunities as well as extended pieces of writing including a narrative and a newspaper report.
In maths, Year 1 children will work on money, measurement and fractions, and Year 2 children will also be working on addition and subtraction.
In science, we will be learning about evolution and inheritance.
In history, we will be continuing our topic of ‘Florence Nightingale’. The children will learn about the main events that took place during the 19th century; what life was like for women during this time; Florence Nightingale’s life and the Crimean war.
In geography, we will be continuing our topic ’Weather and Extreme Weather’. The children will learn about climates and their physical features; the characteristics of normal and extreme weather.
In art, we will also be continuing our topic of ‘The Beauty of Flowers’. Children will study artists such as Marc Quinn, Claude Monet and William Morris. They will learn about the significance of flowers in art and the different materials and techniques used in creating floral artwork.
In Design and Technology, the children will focus on textiles; creating their own pouches.
In Physical Education, the children will complete enrichment sessions with Premier Education and will then take part in tennis and gymnastics sessions with their class teacher on their usual PE day.
Swans (Year 2)
Over the last month the children have been really enjoying learning all about the Emperor Penguins in Antarctica along side reading 'The Emperor's Egg'. We have created lots of beautiful writing and have been working as a team to create a class book. In Year 2 we have been busy learning about multiplication and division and applying our skills. We have been looking at plants and seasonal changes, we have experienced going outdoors in some lessons to observe the things around us.
In the afternoons we have been discussing lots about Florence Nightingale in history and different weather and climates in geography, which we are excited to continue for the rest of the Spring term.
We have started our new story this term called 'The Robot and the Bluebird'. There are lots of exciting things to learn from this book and we are looking forward to writing about it.
Every Monday this term we have an exciting opportunity in PE to learn about target games. So far, we have learnt about throwing and catching.
Year 3 (Otters)
Year 3 have thoroughly enjoyed their Design and Technology unit: Adapting a recipe. Their end goal was to design, make and package a set of biscuits for a specific target audience. Our favourite part was taste testing all the amazing biscuits we baked!
Here are some other highlights from the last month. Maths: multiplication and division and beginning fractions; English: 'The Lion and the Unicorn and other Hairy Tales' including the 'Heavenly Elephant'. Comparing characters, hot-seating and persuading characters to make difficult choices; geography: landscape features and different mountain types; history: Ancient Egyptians, their settlement reasons, farming and tools; computing: creating i-movies; PE: improvisational dance and gymnastic floor sequences including balances and rolls; science: Plants, their parts and functions; music: Viking songs, learning to singing unison and beginning to include 2 part singing.
This term we are looking forward to continuing our learning of the recorder in music, learning our fourth note and performing songs. We are also looking forward to our poetry unit in English, focusing on the book ‘Hot like Fire and other poems’.
Year 5 and 6
Orcas
Orcas have thoroughly enjoyed reading 'Street Child' by Berlie Doherty and created some fantastic circus advertisements. They have emphasised with the torturous life that Jim has had to go through and showed great reflections on his thoughts and feelings.
In PE, Orcas created dances to reflect their school journeys, incorporating memories from Early Years all the way up to Year 5 and 6. These dances were fluid, controlled and displayed great story-telling abilities.
The Y6 children in Orcas have been working extremely hard in preparation for the upcoming SATs tests - they have all showed tremendous improvements thanks to their hard work and dedication to their learning.
Blue Whales
In science we have been dissecting flowers and identifying the male and female parts used in reproduction.
PE has been swimming and this will continue until 6 lessons have been completed. In geography we have been leaning about contrasting biomes and in history we have discovered more about the Victorian transport system and how the Industrial Revolution had a huge impact on Victorian Britain. In art we have been expressing our inner feelings using paint in the style of Jackson Pollock.
We really enjoyed our visit to Immingham Library to help inspire our love of reading.
We are looking forward to our focus on Christianity and considering the question: How significant is it for Christians to believe that God intended Jesus to die?
We are also looking forward to gymnastics and tennis in PE once swimming is completed.
