Kendra lee Point Pleasant Junior/Senior High School

ABOUT ME

My name is Kendra Lee and I am a senior at Point Pleasant Junior/Senior High School. I am the EIC (Editor In Chief) of our program Point Pleasant Live. I have been helping with this program since I was in junior high and also have been in the same class for all four years of high school. I help with many things inside of our classroom and have also received high recognition in our after-school program. I also play multiple sports, sing in the choir, and I am very active in my school as a whole.

Personal Narrative

Reporting and writing

In January, me and my group were named the winners of the No School Spirits PSA Contest for the entire state of West Virginia. There were 51 entries in the contest. We won $5,000 dollars for our program and came up with a great message for other youth across our state. I was responsible for helping write and edit our submission. The Choices You Make

As a member of Point Pleasant Live, we get the chance to report on some very special things in our community. This past fall, we were invited to a nearby school to celebrate a special event they were having. We spent the day taking photos, recording b-roll, and enjoying the positive vibes as a team. Here is an example of the video package that I helped put together. Mason County Moments

editing, leadership, and team building

Editing. I am responsible for many things inside of our classroom. As an EIC, I put together my own videos as well as help our younger students learn how to edit on Final Cut Pro.

Leadership. As an EIC in our classroom, I help create content but I am also there to lead our room. I try to be a role model to the younger students below me. I help organize our week, bounce around to different groups, and do anything else that I can to help us continue to be a great program. Here is an example of a video that I helped a freshman edit this week. It was the first time she had ever edited her own video. Bad Dad Jokes

Team Building. In our classroom, we are a family. It is the responsibility of the older people in the room to continue the tradition of us being a close group. We spend a lot of time together both in class and after school so it is vital for us to be close. I try to be a positive influence and show the younger ones in the room how to be a team and more importantly - a family.

web and social media

Web. Our program just stared our web-site this school year, www.pointislive.com, so we are still learning how to utilize it. I help our WSM (Web-Site Manager) see what our site needs and keep it updated.

Social Media. We have a very strong social media presence that I help monitor with our adviser. Our page has been seen by over one million different users on Facebook for two consecutive years despite living in a small town of 5,000 people. We post our videos, sporting event updates, things we do in the community, and so much more.

design

Our program is responsible for posting and designing several different things for our school and county. I have some examples of some of the graphics that I have helped create to celebrate our "Star of the Show" or simply to highlight what events are happening this week.

broadcast journalism

I am responsible for a lot of things in our after-school program but my main responsibility is providing commentary for both soccer and basketball. I have been praised by our community for my knowledge of the game and also my constant enthusiasm for both schools. I love to be on the mic and also help teach the younger kids how to keep improving. Here is the link for a recent basketball game that I was on. Point Pleasant vs. Buffalo Boys Basketball

photojournalism

When I am not on a microphone, you will find me with a camera taking photos. Our program has seen our photography really take off the last few years. I have been fortunate enough to take pictures not just at games but also local events like the Mason County Fair and photos for a groundbreaking at our local hospital for a new emergency room. The photo here is from a football game when the game kept getting stopped due to weather but I stuck around and took as many photos as I could.

law, ethics, and news literacy

Our program has been a fixture in our community for years. With that said, when we decide to cover something we are always sure to follow any laws that may apply to coverage of certain situations or kids. We are taught how to behave and report in an ethical manner.

MARKETING AND AUDIENCE ENGAGEMENT

Point Pleasant Live is unlike any other program in our area when it comes to these things. Our social media platforms are the most popular pages in our area. All of the followers of the other sports pages in our school (and even our school page) added up do not equal how many followers we have. We showcase our school and community daily and try to highlight the positive things in our school. Our community loves PPL and the things we do for them. You can find us on Facebook, Instagram, X, and TikTok!

COMMITMENT TO DIVERSITY

Our program is a very diverse program. We have students that come from many different backgrounds whether it is inside of our school (different groups that people hang out with). We also have multiple foreign exchange students in our program and we have been able to learn their culture this school year with them being in our program. When people in our community see PPL, they see a wide variety of people.
