The Cadet Corner Volume 5 I October 2024

Cadet Of The Month: Joseph Koons, 1st year

The cadet of this month is Joseph Koons, this young man is a shining bright star and a model of what a cadet should be. When asked about his favorite part of JROTC, Koons said he enjoys executing and learning drill: His favorite hobby outside of JROTC is fishing. Peers describe him as hardworking and resilient; "Koons always does what he is asked without hesitation and has a great attitude while doing it." Aside from just being a cadet, he is also involved in the JROTC drill team and flag detail crew, he is also a former reserve cadet. Congratulations to you cadet Koons!

Cadet of the Quarter: Gabriella Shultz, 1st year

Cadet of the quarter is a way of picking one outstanding cadet to shout out at the end of each quarter. Cadet Gabriella Shultz is our detachment's first cadet honored with this title for the 24-25 school year. Gabbi is the definition of disciplined and invested. She goes out of her way to make it to color guards and drill practices. This week she'll also be traveling to Marion county as a part of our Raider Team. Our staff interviewed her for her thoughts about the program and this is what she had to say, "The program is good, but it can always improve to get better. Everything and everyone can be better but for what it is I think it is a great program." Shultz is involved in many things in and out of JROTC, she states "I like drill, I want to work with rifles, and in general I want to learn all of the roles and what they do. I'm also involved in Joi club, NHS, TSA, Softball and an employee for Papa john's going on 3 years." In her free time Gabbi likes to play video games, design and stream on her twitch. Big congratulations to Cadet Shultz.

APT

This month APT is kicking off, ATP (Awareness Presentation Team) is a program within JROTC that spreads awareness regarding dangerous drugs, underage drinking, vaping and bullying (cyberbullying). The goal is to regularly visit each middle school in the county during ribbon week.

Bardstown and Nelson County Flag Details

Daily flag details take place at Bardstown High and Nelson County High. Flag details allow JROTC students to learn how to properly care for our flag by ceremoniously raising the flag each morning and lowering it each afternoon. By learning this cadets are able to master the skill of properly folding the flag and resting it in a secure place. Our mission is to have daily flag details at each middle and highschool preformed by students from their respective schools.

Health and Physical Exercise

With a new school year comes a new program, including changes to our health and PT curriculums. Each cadet is required to do a workout each week designed specifically by our Physical Training Officer (PTO). These workouts can vary in difficulty from fun PT weeks to intense workouts.

1st year cadets, or those who haven't yet completed their Health and PE credit, are currently enrolled in an online health course through either Edmentum or Edgenuity. 3rd and 4th year cadets who have already completed their Health and PE requirements are currently enrolled in Civics where they are researching and learning about current domestic/world issues that affect our daily lives including the upcoming Presidential election, local elections and proposed changes to the Kentucky Constitution.

October 18th Raider Competition

2 AFJROTC Raider teams traveled to Marion County High School to participate in an all day physical fitness "Raider" competition. The competition was a resounding success for the teams. They brought home two trophies for Track & Field and Tug of War!! Cadets who participate in 2 or more competitions, (while attending regular practices) are eligible to receive a raider ribbon to go on their uniform.

Unit Improvements:

Over the course of the school year so far, the majority of our cadets have started to learn what AFJROTC is in depth. We have seen improvements in younger cadets learning how to move up the ranks. Drill performance has also come a long way from where it started back in August. Each cadet coming to drill practice could eventually have an opportunity to be on either a Color Guard Detail or Drill Team performed at events throughout the community.

Wow, I cannot believe that we are already less than a month away from everything related to Veterans Day!! Time flies when your program is consistently planning and executing the next Color Guard, Community Service and/or Curriculum In Action Event(s). With that, our young detachment is off to a great start. The inaugural Defender Games was better than expected (tons of community exposure), multiple Color Guards are being executed throughout several different venues as well as Cadet Community Service Events (Bardstown Bourbon / Art's & Craft Festivals). Our Cadet Leadership Team is already in the thick of coordinating / planning all of our upcoming Veterans Day Events as well (please stay tuned for more info on all of that). Finally, I couldn't be more proud of the dedication that several of our new cadets are giving towards after school Wednesday Drill Practice every week. Clearly there is an obvious distinction between the cadets who are putting in the extra work and it doesn't go unnoticed. Personally, this is my favorite time of the year in Kentucky (September - December). Please reach out if you need anything from us and we greatly appreciate all of our community partners (American Legion, Armed Forces, VFW...), school district (both Bardstown / Nelson County) and family & friends support!! God Bless each and everyone of you as we enter into the Holiday Season....R/ Maj Rowe

Messages from MSgt Davis

Right now we are deep into the first semester of school. For our NCHS and TNHS students, we are beginning this week to deep dive into how to write an argumentative essay. This district wide writing assignment is designed to help students learn how to effectively write and communicate their thoughts and feelings about how their future looks. On Monday, October 28th, students will remain in Cardinal Crew or Care & Connect and write the essay that tells their future story.

1st and 2nd year students are researching and learning how to build the foundations for a healthy lifestyle. When we keep ourselves physically, mentally and emotionally strong, we are creating the tools needed to live our lives to its fullest potential.
