Rosalind Shaffer Silvermine Guild Artist | 2018 - present

Silvermine has had a considerable influence on the direction of my work as an artist. I was working on large painted wood constructions for several years, but I began to find that the flat sheets of wood that I was using lacked the ability to create the organic shapes and concepts I was striving for. I decided to give clay a try and enrolled in a ceramics class at Silvermine Art Center. After just one class I realized I was hooked on this wonderful medium! Silvermine was more than just a place to learn new artistic skills-it was an amazing community where creative energy is contagious! I am forever grateful for the years I spent there developing my skills and making lifelong friends who follow a creative path. I continued as a student taking classes in various techniques for several years before setting up my own clay studio and kiln.
Wounded Heart, ceramic, nails, 13 x 7 x 7 inch, $1,400.

There is an underlying narrative throughout most of my work that focuses on an exploration of cultural, sociological and political issues. I try to provide a visual dialogue with the events that particularly affect us. Sometimes I use humor to explore serious subject matter. Clay offers the perfect medium to convey the expressiveness and vibrancy that best describes the human spirit.
