Reading Girls' School newsletter - 12 january 2024

Principal's message:

I wish to start by wishing you all a happy New Year.

We have seen a busy start to the year as students return to their studies and participate in wider school life. We are really excited about our partnership with Reading University and this week we had a number of their students come to our school to provide weekly academic mentoring to a number of our Year 11 students. This is not only providing our students with extra academic support, but it also provides them with the opportunity to explore what university life is like. I know that our Year 11 really appreciate the input.

In addition, all our Year 11 are having practice interviews currently with employers from Reading and beyond. Employees from the Ministry of Defence, Thames Water, Virgin Media, Ministry of Justice, KPMG and Amazon to name a few, have been in school meeting 1:1 with our students asking questions that simulated a college/work interview. The aim is to increase our students' confidence in how to present themselves in interviews and to prepare them for the type of questions they may be asked. It is a great opportunity and I wish, as always, to thank Ms Thomson, our Careers and Employability Skills Coordinator, for the wide range of opportunities she organises for our students.

As the weather has definitely got colder, I wished to remind you of our severe weather policy. As I stated before, the decision to close the school because of poor weather is never taken lightly. If we do need to close the school, we will make an announcement on the school website and send a message via Edulink to parents. We would ask parents and pupils to refer to the website, rather than telephoning the school. The announcement will be clearly visible on the home page of our website. When reading this information, please check the date carefully. It is unusual for us to know the day before that the school will definitely be closed and the decision about closure is usually made by 7.15am at the latest.

If a decision is taken to close early, following consultation with bus companies and, if appropriate, the Local Authority, a bulletin will be posted on the homepage of the school website confirming the time the school will close. We will send a message to parents via Edulink. Please ensure that we have up-to-date records, so we can rely on reaching all parents by this method.

I wish you all a restful weekend.
