Project DJ Escapade

Introduction

This is my journey in DJ'ing from complete and utter beginner to whatever this turns out to be. So where did it start well back in my mid teens I was introduced to the dance/garage music scene via mix tapes produced by Ian Ossia. The Oss tapes were hot property. I loved the way the tracks were mixed and the variety of music.

In my late teens I scraped some money together and bough a cheap set of turntables and a mixer and a few vinyl records thinking that I was going to be the next best thing. This lasted about 4 weeks before realising that I had no idea what I was doing back in those days there was no YouTube and I had very limited patience so I sold all the stuff I had bought.

Over the last 30 years this has always been an itch that needed scratching (pardon the pun) so in 2023 I decided that I would give this another go.

This is the story of my journey.

October 2023

Unable to buy some meaningful equipment until mid/late November I decided to do some heavy research into equipment, software and tutorials, since my late teens the game has moved on quite substantially with controllers, software and music

My first job was to download the software. I decided to use Rekordbox rather than Serato as Pioneer DJ seem to be the industry standard. I downloaded some tunes and did some research on equipment. During this process I was already hooked. I wanted to do this properly and although this is just for me and with no plans to gig. For those who know me you will know that I love a spreadsheet so I decided I would spreadsheet my learning and do it systematically

The learning process

I Started doing the odd 2/3 track mixing on Rekordbox using my MacBook and decided to record the mixes and upload to MixCloud and Soundcloud. This way I could monitor my progress and if at any point in the future I could look back at how far I had come. It was then that I set myself a goal which was to play a 60 minute set at Abigail's 18th birthday party in February.

So I now have some software and some tunes. I needed a name and some consistent album names. After alot of thought I went for Escapade as a name and then woud name my mixes Esc1,2,3,45 etc

I needed some album art and for this I dedided to go with a grafitti art theme as there were loads of options and they are bright, colorful and fun.
