Two Harbors a series by brian lange stemmler

Logline

When a talented triage Doctor is recruited to help launch a cutting edge helivac rescue program in rural Minnesota, her best laid plans for the future start to fall apart, as she discovers a life there she never knew she wanted.

Summary

Dr. Amy Barnes is a skilled triage Doctor at Boston Medical. After retiring from military service as a Medic, Amy has settled into civilian life: Promising medical career at a top hospital, a close group of friends and a loving Fiancé. An opportunity to fast track her career by participating in a cutting edge emergency medical rescue program in the midwest, compels her to put her life on hold to pursue her dreams. As she becomes enmeshed with the Lake Superior community of Two Harbors, Amy begins to question whether the life she was building for herself in Boston was the right choice after all.

Setting

Two Harbors is a small fishing and mining town set on the north shore coast of Lake Superior. It is located approximately 1 hour drive (20 minutes by helicopter) from Duluth, Minnesota and 2 hours drive from the Canadian Border. It is buffeted by the Lake on one side and the Boundary Waters Canoe area on the other side.

The Hospital System

The state of the art, billion dollar hospital in Duluth, Minnesota runs a network of remote clinics in the north shore "Arrowhead" region of the state. They are linked through a high tech video and monitoring system, operated by the hospital. Through this system, hospital staff can assist in triage cases at the Clinics, and provide backup with a comprehensive helicopter unit to evacuate patients in need of hospital care.

The northwest hospital system consists of 4 remote clinics, which rely on the hospital for remote virtual consultation and support via emergency airlift.

Dr. Amy Barnes

Amy is an ambitious and confident Doctor. As a retired Marine Medic with two tours in Afghanistan, she is not afraid to take on a challenge. Some say, at times, she acts like she has something to prove. Maybe she does. At Boston Medical, she struggles to get out from the shadow of her father, the retired Chief of Staff of the hospital where she currently works.

Wes Adamson

Wes is a wilderness guide, bartender and grocery store delivery man in the town of Two Harbors. Like many local residents, Wes came to the region from somewhere else, and has chosen to make Two Harbors his permanent home. Wes is well known and liked throughout the town. He is rugged yet empathetic, willing to help those who need it.

Matt Morehouse

Amy's Fiance, who works in the business office at Boston Medical. Matt is heavily involved in the acquisition of the Duluth hospital system and thus is constantly at work with little time for his relationship with Amy. When Amy moves to Two Harbors, Matt stays behind. As time goes on, distance and his friendship with Amy's best friend starts to strain their relationship.

Dr. Emily Noyes

Amy's friend and co-worker in the Boston Medical ER. She is smart, sassy and doesn't take life too seriously. She works hard, plays hard and leaves a trail of broken hearted men in her wake. She is looking for a relationship like Amy and Matt have, and co-opting theirs might not be out of the question for her.

Dr. Brian Baker

The head of the trauma department at Duluth General. He overseas the remote rescue program and is Amy's Supervisor. He is not a fan of Amy and is skeptical that she has what it takes to succeed in this program.

Dr. Mitchell Warren

Assistant Doctor at the Two Harbors Clinic. He is Amy's medical and emotional support system as she works to get the program operational.

Amanda Rogers

Two Harbors grocery store owner and Wes' Ex. She tries to play nice with Wes, but their history sometimes makes it challenging. She worries about her kid brother who often gets into trouble.

Jake Rogers

Amanda's younger brother. He's kind of an aimless soul who has a penchant for getting into trouble. He often relies on Wes to help bail him out.
